I busy myself reading a book on my kindle app. When there are about two minutes left before class begins, that familiar electric charge strikes my skin. Glancing at the door, I find Alessandro striding in, clutching his notebook and pen, marching straight to his desk at the back of the classroom. He pays no attention to the students trying to strike up a conversation with him, just leans back and folds his arms across his chest. Then his eyes flick to me.

An hour later, I arrived at the police station in my wheelchair. Hearing my voice, the person handcuffed to the chair slowly looked up. Upon seeing that familiar face, I felt a mix of emotions. “Ms. Spector.” My homeroom teacher looked me up and down. A flash of hatred crossed her eyes. “How are you still alive?” I rolled my wheelchair up to face the homeroom teacher. “Ms. Spector, can you tell me why you killed so many valedictorians?” My homeroom teacher scoffed coldly and turned her head away.

Luckily, the next day she had no classes, so she grabbed her schedule from the front desk, had breakfast in the cafeteria, and went out for some shopping. Grand Elite Academy was on the outskirts of the main city and was surrounded by small towns. Innessa bought some fake vines, fairy lights, and some double-sided sticky tape. On her way back, she had an iced latte. Stepping inside her room, she removed her shoes, placed them aside, and padded inside barefoot. She checked her banking app once before she got to work.

The bell rang with a sharp chime, echoing through the arched hallways of Creswell Academy. Elara slid into her seat by the window in Contemporary World Affairs—once her favorite class, a lifetime ago.
