The entire time we walk in silence but I know Dante has something on his mind. He absentmindedly touches his lips, licking them, grinds his teeth together, and keeps looking back. I pull him to a stop, and I want to know, what is he doing? “Something smells wonderful,” he whispered. I remember the monster in the forest. I tell Dante a half-life and a truth. I found a monster with delicious honey, I ate him, and now he is gone. Not dead, but gone, and that is all he needs to know, that is all he will ever know about how I survived the Danger of Daylight.

Wasteland Nathan's eyes fluttered open, blinking against the soft dawn light. He glanced around, as he'd done many times before, but it was pointless, as it had been each time before. He was alone up here. There was no one around. Not a soul, human or animal. Nothing at all, as far as the eye could see but the pungent stink of the air was making him dizzy, his stomach churning, unbelievable, repellent and, gut-wrenching, numbing foul stink.

The engine emitted a final, rhythmic grinding noise—metal scraping metal in a staccato cycle. It rattled my teeth and sent a vibration up my spine that settled in my jaw. The machine gave a terminal shudder and died.

Ravel's face is a mask of rage and fear. "What the hell was that?" "A warning," I say, staring at the horizon.

She tries to charge again, but Rebecca holds her back. "Stop," she yells, "Stop. You, shut the hell up. You stop trying to kill him. Okay? My god. Listen, we're out of Boston now. Let's just move on. Drifter, where to next? We're not in Boston anymore so I can't help with directions." Eyeing the package, the package eyeing me, I turn away from her. "Don't worry," I say, now facing Rebecca. "I can take over." Looking beyond, I see a complete wasteland. There is nothing but death before. Skeletons covered the ground, weeds and dried trunks are the only plants leftover, and there isn't so much as a drop of fresh water anywhere.

Chelsea whispered, watching from the porch with Ben beside her. “Honestly?” Ben muttered, adjusting his son’s hat as Darian leaned dramatically off the saddle for a stick. “It’s terrifying. Like she’s training a small army of chaos.” “Oh, she absolutely is,” Gunner said, arriving with a plate of grilled food like the MVP he was. “And someday they’ll be teenagers, and then we all die.” Cheyenne took a bite of her burger and sighed. “Worth it.” As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, the group gathered around a fire pit in the yard. Marshmallows were skewered. Liora tried to eat hers raw. Kael made his stick into a sword. Darian accidentally launched his into the bushes.

Her eyes fell. “Does anyone have a phone? We need to call the hospital! Ariana needs to be lifeflighted out..." "I do!" Josh called out, throwing his phone towards Allison like passing a football.
