Chapter 12 "I-Is that a The Fault in our Stars poster?" Dean asked, his brows knitted together as he masked a focused expression. I looked behind me and back at him and let out a soft chuckle, "Yeah, as a matter of fact, it is." He relaxed back in his seat and chuckled as well. "I'm surprised you can see it." We were all in good spirits. The kids must have been excited about moving too, because they gobbled down breakfast in record time. I rinsed the bowls and put them in Emily’s sink. Emily went over the plan one more time with me as the kids were loading up in the car. We were all excited as we drove back to Jax’s house for what would hopefully be our last trip there. Levi and Shawn filled in the time talking about all of the stuff they were planning on doing on the farm and asking if we would eventually be able to get a dirt bike. I loved hearing them talk about our future.

It looked like I had missed a lot of drama in the past six months! As I got in the car, I noticed Jason’s gaze on me. I stopped what I was doing and met his eyes. He immediately jumped up from the ground. He looked like a kid who had been caught doing something wrong. The car started, and through the rearview mirror, I saw Jason running after us. Then he stood by the roadside, staring in the direction we were leaving for a long time.

I wiped them quickly, but accidentally tapped one of the voice messages. "Find a way to get rid of Ruby's baby," Nate's voice said. "Silently. Make sure she never finds out." He had sent it to his secretary. "Put something in her food. I can't keep this child. I'm afraid Lucy will be upset if she finds out." The phone slipped from my hands. So his love could be faked that easily. Those sweet words from earlier in the day, that tender embrace—they meant nothing. The same man who had spoken of happiness had also planned to erase our child like it was some inconvenient stain.

' I only remember this, but now I am alone. The tin door is attached to a wire hook. It is a relief to open it by hand. The cow is calling in the barn.
