In the middle of the night, a distant blare of a phone touched my ears. The warm body against me moved and then the sound was gone. The depth of darkness pulled me in again into a peaceful sleep until I heard another noise.
Snuggling into the pillow, I turned on the bed. The lack of a warmth behind me forced my eyes open. Instead of Syl, there lay emptiness beside me.
