Evangeline’s POV

My stomach growled despite the twist of anxiety.

Kaia gave me a soft smile. “The Alpha said you must eat. You haven’t since morning.” She said, ignoring my question and changing the subject. Perhaps it wasn't the time to ask her questions like this.

I blinked. It really was evening. I could tell from the fading glow against the tall windows.

“Thank you,” I said and reached out to take the plate.

Kaia stepped back, folding her hands, her gaze lowered. Always gentle, always silent.

“Have you eaten?” I asked her suddenly, my voice softer than I expected.

She looked up, surprised. “It’s not important, my lady.”

“Kaia,” I said, giving her a small, tired smile. “Please. Sit. Eat with me”

“I’m not allowed to—”

“You’re with me. And I’m asking you to.” I scooted over and motioned for her to take the seat beside me.

There was a pause. A brief flicker of hesitation in her eyes before she gave the smallest of nods and lowered herself beside me.
