My phone buzzed, Eleanor's name glowing on the screen like a warning sign. With a scowl, I answered, my voice tight with annoyance.
"Eleanor," I spat out. "What do you want?"
"Adam, please," she replied, her voice a practiced purr. "I'm calling because I need to explain..."
"Explain what?" I cut her off, my patience fraying. "That baby isn't mine. We both know that."
A nervous laugh tinkled through the line.
"Oh, Adam," she cooed, the sweetness in her voice a jarring contrast to her words. "Can't we just...talk about this? Like adults?"
"There's nothing to talk about," I shot back, my voice rising with irritation. "You're just trying to stir up trouble. Why don't you leave me and my wife alone?"
"Your wife?" Eleanor scoffed. "She's gone, Adam. She doesn't want you anymore. Not with all this...mess."
My hand clenched around the phone, anger and frustration surging through me.
