Chapter 2

Author: xixi
"Do you think you're doing right by your parents? Open up! What are you hiding in there for?" Fiona shrieked.

I ignored her cutting words and calmly texted, "Good sir, I am your long-lost dance partner!"

I then sent over my ID, along with a video of me playing the harp at the New Year's gala.

Luke immediately replied, "You'll do. You'd better not bail on me! Let me be clear. I only need you as a plus one for the banquet. There will be no funny business! Don't pull the same stunt as she did!"

Then, he sent me a screenshot.

I opened it out of curiosity. To my surprise, the person he was referring to was none other than Fiona.

It was the same Fiona, sitting on her high horse, firmly telling me not to go through with the arrangement. She had added Luke the first chance she got.

She had even sent him a heavily edited and revealing photo of herself. Her choice of words was bold and filled with innuendo. It was obvious to a blind man that she was willing to do more than just accompany him to the banquet.

When Luke declined her offer, she even lowered the price by half.

Unfortunately, she was still rejected.

Now I understood why she was trying so hard to stop me. This right here was the real reason.

When Fiona realized I wasn't responding, she finally lost her temper and roared, "I'll report you to the faculty for improper conduct and get your scholarship revoked if you do this!"

I yanked the door open.

Fiona, who had been leaning against it, lost her balance and fell hard on her ass.

I didn't have my guard up in my past life. So, she successfully snatched my phone, retracted my message, and even blocked Luke on my behalf.

Naturally, I was pissed. However, I didn't bother confronting her since we were roommates.

As a result, another woman from our university was picked.

That same young lady proudly posted a picture of the 100 grand she received the very next day.

Back then, Fiona had feigned concern as she comforted me, saying gently, "There's no way a guy would give her that much money just for being his plus one. She must've slept with him! That's no different from selling her body.

"Renee, you have to be better than this! You would've lost your chastity if I hadn't stopped you. A woman's chastity is her greatest asset. No good man would ever want you if you've lost it."

From then on, Fiona had the gall to call herself my savior.

However, it didn't end there. Mom suffered a stroke two weeks later. Fortunately, it was treatable. Unfortunately, the surgery cost 15 grand.

Sadly, we only managed to gather five thousand dollars even after pooling together all our savings and borrowing from every friend and family we had.

We were exactly ten grand short. I regretted it so badly that I wanted to kill myself.

Still, I scrambled to find ways to gather the money.

Out of nowhere, an anonymous account uploaded an AI face-swapped picture of me posing seductively.

The caption even read, "Add me. 30 dollars per session." They wrote my contact information below and highlighted that I was a student at Beaumont University.

In the end, they attached Mom's medical records to prove that I was indeed in need of money.

The post went viral, sparking a campus-wide scandal. People eventually discovered that I had tried to add Luke as a friend.

"Women like her sell her body so often that karma's finally catching up to her."

"Let's support her business. 30 dollars is a steal."

"Students these days are unbelievable."

"I can't believe that I'm in the same school with a legend like her! Then again, I've always wondered how those women could afford their makeup and nails."

I became the university's pariah. People mocked me wherever I went.

Mom also missed the optimal time for treatment because of this scandal. To make matters worse, her condition deteriorated rapidly because of me.

Tormented by her illness, she eventually chose to give up on treatment and ended her life by ingesting pesticides.

Was this why Fiona was so confident that I'd come begging her?Although I had leveraged memories from my past life to invest in top-performing stocks before Independence Day and was no longer a broke university student who'd feel guilty spending a few hundred bucks, that didn't mean I'd tolerate such injustice.Fiona tilted her chin proudly at me, acting like she had achieved some grand victory. It was as though she thought that this was enough to nail me to a pillar of shame.I was just about to snap at her when a figure stepped in front of me protectively. That person was none other than Seraphina. She was just a fresh graduate. She had a bright future ahead of her, but she stood firm before George, who was one of the school directors. "I've looked into this student. She's an excellent student both in academics and in character. I am sure that she is not someone who would participate in such things. Don't you think that you're being unreasonable for condemning her before hea

However, things were much better now than in my past life. That was because many people spoke up for me."Hm, I have a feeling that she's being set up. She made tens of thousands by attending a banquet. Does she really need to do something like this?""I think the same way. Who would consider doing something like this unless they're desperate for money?""Us students from Beaumont University could make more than that by tutoring another. There's no reason for her to do something like this."My heart warmed as I read those comments. I was replying to my friends' messages of concern when one particular text caught my eye.It was from Luke. He had texted me saying, "Do you need my help? I know you're not someone like that."I couldn't help but find it amusing as I replied, "But we've only met once."His reply was almost instantaneous. "You're someone my grandfather praised! He's never complimented me like that even once!"There was a clear note of grievance in those words. My brai

It was difficult to scrape away a person's inherent malice. So, I had complete faith that Fiona would make the same choices in this lifetime. However, I wouldn't hesitate to send her to prison this time. Perhaps she'd be able to bond with Ethan there.Fiona's outburst quickly spread throughout the university.Still, the most talked about topic was that Luke had actually transferred a whopping total of 21 thousand dollars to me. "I can't believe I breathed the same air as someone that rich.""Why did you tell me this? Why?""God! I regret missing that fortune!""Calm down, guys. First of all, he said he wanted a female partner. Second of all, he insisted on having a good-looking one!""Thank you, darling Samaritan. You've given me two reasons to end myself!""By the way, don't you guys think that they'd be so cute together? A handsome guy and a beauty? Gosh, they're such eye candy!"…The online forum might as well be a beehive with how active the discussions were.Meanwhil

My heart skipped a beat when I heard Luke's tone. Was he… planning to take me to a hotel?"I'll transfer you a thousand dollars shortly. Pick a hotel you like and stay there for the night."He turned to look at me with eyes that glinted like the night sky. "You did well. I'm very satisfied."I sighed in relief as I thought to myself in amusement, "God, I let my imagination run wild there." Then, I said, "Of course. It's no problem at all. If we're all done here, I'll get going now."I couldn't help but grin from ear to ear when I received a notification stating that I had received a total deposit of 21 thousand dollars. However, Luke stopped me before I could leave. He sent me a few pictures of us from the event—me in my dress, arm-in-arm with him. There were also a few candid shots from the banquet. Then, he sent me a really long text that was at least 200 words, urging me to post about the event on my social media account."Remember to tell everyone that I'm not a scammer!" h

I felt like a princess the minute I wore the dress. The sales assistant beamed as she complimented me, "This dress suits you so well! You're already a ten. But with that dress? You're an 11."I didn't feel particularly happy when I heard her praise. I've had plenty of people "scoring" me when someone tarnished my reputation with that AI face-swapped picture. Besides, the sales assistant wasn't really talking to me. She had obviously noticed that Luke was the one holding the purse strings. Luke nodded in approval. "Not bad. Still, you've got one thing wrong. What's with all this scoring nonsense? We're not judges."I glanced at Luke as a surge of warmth spread across my heart. It had nothing to do with love. It was the joy of being respected as a person.I overheard the price for the dress when he went to pay the bill. It came to a total of 5,800 dollars.Jesus. I really should show the receipt to those people in the group chat who had mocked Luke for being a poser. This guy r

The university reinstated my scholarship. That was good news, at least.Fiona glared daggers at me. "Don't think that you've won. I'll make you pay!"What was she talking about?I was still mulling over her words when Luke's voice snapped me out of it. "Why are you still standing there? Come on. I'm taking you to buy a decent outfit. Don't embarrass me tonight, got it?"Fiona stomped her feet out of sheer fury. She didn't expect that she'd fail to stop me from becoming Luke's plus one."She's just a clueless country bumpkin! You'll regret this!" she screamed at Luke before running off with her face in her hands.I had lost all hope in regaining his favor. So, his words reignited the hope in my heart. I was so relieved that I couldn't help but tear up. Then, I looked at Luke and sincerely thanked him. "Thank you. I really need the money. I'm sorry for implying that you only chose me for my looks."His fierce demeanor immediately crumbled. He looked utterly flustered. "Hey, now.
