“Mommy, where is Daddy?"
Jace’s small voice pulled me out of my conversation with Vera. I turned to see him rushing down the stairs, his white shirt half-tucked into his pants, his curly hair bouncing with each step. He ran into my arms and I bent slightly, adjusting his shirt and brushing my fingers through his hair.
“Look who’s dressed up like a prince,” Vera grinned, watching him with admiration.
“Aunt Vera!” Jace beamed, turning from me and launching himself toward her. She caught him easily, pulling him into a warm hug before playfully tickling his sides. He erupted in laughter, his joy echoing around the living room.
“I hope I have a son like you someday,” Vera said, squeezing him.
“Really, Aunt Vera?” Jace’s eyes lit up. “I’m going to have a brother when you do!”
I laughed, staring at Jace. His smile and happiness a reminder to me how much I've been through to finally have such happiness
