The elevator ride to Lila’s condo was silent, but my head wasn’t.

I kept replaying that moment—Fallon’s eyes when she saw the text. The way her voice broke. The way she stepped back like I was the enemy. Like I was still the man who broke her.

All that ground we’d gained. All the nights of quiet closeness, the cautious trust rebuilding between us. One text blew it up like it was nothing.

“I’m pregnant.”

I didn’t even knock when I reached Lila’s door. I slammed my fist into it—twice. Loud enough to wake the dead. Loud enough to rattle the bones of every lie between us.

She opened on the third knock, already dressed like she expected company. Her face was pale beneath flawless makeup, but her eyes gave her away. Red-rimmed. Calculating. A little too ready.

“Well,” she said, stepping aside. “Took you long enough.”

I walked in. Every muscle in my body was tight. “Is it mine?”
