I don’t remember the ride to Mia’s apartment.
Not the Uber. Not the driver asking if I was okay. Not the awkward nod I gave him with tears still wet on my cheeks.
All I remember is standing in front of her door, keys clutched so tight in my fist they left crescent moons in my skin. I didn’t knock. I just texted here and waited.
And then the door swung open.
“Fallon?”
Mia’s voice cut through the fog like a thread pulling me back into the world. I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. I just looked at her, and whatever she saw in my face made hers soften instantly.
“Oh, honey…”
I fell into her arms before I could stop myself.
And then I broke.
Not in pieces. In waves.
Ugly, choking sobs spilled out of me as she pulled me inside, slammed the door shut with her foot, and held on like she’d trained for this moment her whole life. She didn’t ask what happened. She didn’t say shhh. She just let me cry—let me come apart in her living room while her sweatshirt soaked with my heartbreak.
