When Dave appeared in my office, I felt torn between dismissing him and granting him the few minutes he had requested. Did he truly deserve such a favor? Nevertheless, my curiosity got the better of me—I wanted to know what he had to say. Just a few minutes? It wouldn't make much of a difference. It wasn't like the past when he attempted to blackmail me for refusing to go out for a drink with him.
"You said a few minutes?" I asked him, contemplating my options during the brief seconds he stood there waiting for my response.
"Yes, just a few minutes, ma'am," he added the "ma'am" unintentionally. It was evident that he was on the verge of breaking down, but I remained unaffected.
"Go ahead," I said, diverting my eyes from the computer screen, intending to occupy those few minutes by browsing through one of my social media accounts.
"Amber, it's unfortunate that we both ended up like this..."
