Harvey didn't change. The sneers and whispers from classmates seemed to not affect him at all.

He looked me in the eye and said he hadn't seen me do anything wrong. He believed our classmates were simply following the so-called "herd mentality" in alienating me.

To fit into a group, people often let their actions be shaped by the atmosphere of the group itself.

"So, Raelynn, I want to stay clear-headed. I want to get to know you for myself, not rely on what others say about you," he said.

Harvey's demeanor was calm and confident, almost as if he had everything in life figured out. For a 15-year-old boy, that maturity was both amusing and comforting.

I didn't have any other friends. Harvey was my only friend.

Maybe he was just very good at reading people, but it didn't take long for him to notice how much I had come to depend on him.

Yet, instead of pushing me away, he accepted my presence without hesitation. In fact, he even began learning sign language for me.
