I woke to the sound of a door closing somewhere in the distance.
Muffled, but unmistakably real.
My body felt heavy, like I was swimming up from the bottom of a deep, dark pool. The bed beneath me was soft, too soft. Clean sheets that smelled like nothing—no fear, no filth, no Kaine. Just emptiness.
“…she’s been out for almost twelve hours. That’s normal, right?” A voice. Male. Worried. Luigi.
“Completely normal,” came the reply—a woman’s voice, professional and reassuring. “Her body needed the rest. The sedative Nikolai gave her was mild, but combined with exhaustion and trauma, it’s not surprising she slept this long.”
“When will she wake up?”
“Soon, I think. Her vitals are stable,” she paused, probably to check the pad in her hand. “The sedative should be wearing off soon.”
“How soon?”
“Any minute now.”
