Damien’s POV
Celeste smirked, dropping her fingers. “You were right about one thing though–I do deserve an incredible man. But that sure as hell isn’t you, Damien.”
Each word stabbed like hot knives, wounding my pride.
“That’s not fair, Celeste.” I said, my voice flaring. “I would have protected you just the same if I were closer. I always protect my woman.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow. “So when Vanessa was begging for help and you just stood aside while the police dragged her away, that was you protecting your woman? Wow, I need to take notes from you, Damien.”
Blatant sarcasm dripped from each word.
If we weren’t in the middle of a mall, surrounded by so many witnesses, I would have thrown a right hook at him. Showed this punk his place.
“I feel bad for Vanessa.” Celeste said, shaking her head, lips pursed. “She entrusted herself to the wrong man. You’re too selfish, too blinded by your own self-importance, to be a suitable partner.”
