Chelsey swore that the air in the room had turned tense because of Lucas.
Shirley was the first to notice that he persistently stared at Chelsey. She nudged Layla, who sat beside her, and signaled for her to look at Lucas.
Layla then noticed it, too. Lucas' gaze was simply too conspicuous. So, Shirley and Layla assumed that Lucas and Chelsey knew each other and that their relationship was complicated.
As Dianne was seated beside her, Layla lowered her voice and asked her, "Does Chelsey know Mr. Yates?"
Dianne's heart skipped a beat at the question.
Out of reflex, she said, "No. Why would Chels know him? She doesn't know him."
Layla was skeptical, though.
"But he's staring at her all the time. Maybe he has an eye for her."
"Really?"
Dianne raised her eyes to look across the room. Lucas was indeed staring at Chelsey.
