Chapter 4

Author: Trifle
I fired back without holding back, "Nicole Porter, it seems like your entire family is just a pack of mad dogs. If you can't afford rabies shots, I'll pay for them!

"First of all, I'm not getting rid of my cat, and I'm going to bring all the strays into my home. I'll be walking my cats right in front of your door every day just to piss you off! Second, I'm allergic to wretches, so I suggest you all move out. Otherwise, just looking at you people will ruin my health!

"Since we're neighbors, let's forget the money. All you need to do is come over every day and prostrate at my door, wishing me a long life. That's the only way I'll let you all survive living across from me!"

Nicole's family almost lost it. They spammed the group with insults like "vixen" and "tramp" and sent both voice messages and long texts, as if I'd dug up their family's graves.

But I didn't care what they were sending. I just replied with a "Wow, so impressive" meme.

Seeing Nicole fall apart like that almost had me in stitches. This was better than having a virtual pet!

I tossed my phone onto the bed, then went downstairs to collect all the stray cats.

Since the people across from me were essentially animals, they might abuse these small creatures. I figured I'd better find foster homes for these poor kitties for their safety.

"Little ones, you'll stay with me until I can find you a good home."

Stinko, seeing a bunch of unfamiliar cats suddenly in the house, was so mad it started yowling. I was about to scoop it up for a big cuddle when my phone rang.

"Hello, is this Ms. Bella Martin, the owner of unit 401 in building C5? I'm the property manager, Elliot Thornton. We've received a complaint from the owner of unit 402. They say your cats make too much noise at night and are disturbing the pregnant lady in their house. They'd like you to remove the cats."

I didn't even hesitate to fire back, saying, "Oh, so we do have a property manager? The homeowner's group chat is blowing up, and you haven't even bothered to keep the peace! And unit 402 has the nerve to complain about me? I haven't even complained about their illegal behavior!"

"Well, Ms. Martin, our neighborhood doesn't allow pets. Your actions are in violation of the rules."

Something didn't sit right with me. If the neighborhood had such unreasonable residents, the property management should've ignored them. Why were they suddenly siding with them and trying to lecture me?

But asking me to get rid of my cats? No way!

I snapped back, "What violation? When I moved in, no one told me I couldn't have pets! Now you're bringing this up after the fact? I've been paying my fees without causing any trouble, and you have the nerve to lecture me? You've got to be kidding!"

Elliot sighed deeply. "Look, Ms. Martin, it's important to keep things peaceful with your neighbors. I'm just relaying unit 402's concerns. Please don't take it personally. We'll never resolve anything if you act like this—"

"The problem isn't with me, so why should I have to solve it?" I interrupted, my patience thinning. "I've had my cat for years. It's vaccinated, has all its papers, and it's neutered. It has never caused any noise at night! If unit 402 can't stand it, they can move out or leave this world for good!"

With that, I hung up. Dang it! Did they think I was some kind of pushover?

I was really curious to see what tricks they'd try next.

After the case closed, the residents who had been extorted by Nicole all expressed their gratitude to Robert and me.Through this ordeal, Robert and I naturally grew closer and officially got together. And now, it was time for sweet, everyday romance.Meanwhile, Brianna's belly was getting bigger. With Nicole in prison, she began to worry about having no one to care for her during the late stages of her pregnancy, so she urged Howard to come back home.Howard only responded with vague, dismissive promises. Then one day, I noticed my slippers were missing from the rack near the door. Curious, I checked the surveillance footage. What I found was beyond shocking.Elliot had been visiting unit 402 late at night, with Brianna herself opening the door to let him in. Before the door even closed, the two were already in an embrace.Oh my goodness! She was that far along in her pregnancy, almost ready to give birth, and they weren't even worried? No wonder Elliot had sided with Nicole

I sent a smiley face emoji, thinking to myself that Robert was a pretty great guy.Over the next few days, Robert and I visited the neighbors to collect evidence for the court. After that, all we could do was wait for the trial. The evening before the trial, there was a loud knock at my door.I opened it to find an angry-looking, burly stranger. He glared at me, asking, "So you're the one who's been messing with my mom?"I immediately realized he was Nicole's son, Howard Whitaker. This guy was trouble. I had heard from Robert that Howard worked out of town and only came back occasionally. He was big and rough, and his personality was just as vile as Nicole's.He made it back just in time the day before the trial.I wasn't intimidated. "Your mom tried to extort 20 thousand dollars from me. She did this to herself."Howard pulled out some cash and threw it right at my face. "Take it back, you bitch! It's just 20 thousand dollars. It's not like I can't afford that. You better drop

Nicole unleashed her tantrum, throwing herself onto the floor and crying as if she had just lost a loved one."I already said it was voluntary compensation! Why are you arresting me? They're killing me! Help! The police are killing me!"Brianna seemed panicked now. She clutched her stomach and pretended to kneel. "Bella, Nicole is old. She can't go to jail! I'll apologize to you. I'll transfer the 20 thousand dollars to you right now. Please don't make things difficult for her!"With tears in her eyes, Brianna looked so pitiful, looking as if I were the one forcing her.Too bad I had no morals. "Alright. You can't say I didn't give you a chance."I calmly sat down and spoke slowly, "If you get on your knees and prostrate 20 times, I'll let Nicole go."Brianna froze. Her expression flickered between shock and anger. The moment Nicole heard this, her eyes lit up. She immediately shouted at Brianna, "What are you waiting for? Get on your knees! Do you want to see me go to jail?"S

Nicole hummed, smirking proudly. "Now you're scared, huh? I warned you before. Young people shouldn't be too hot-headed. We're neighbors, so for my grandson's sake, I'll give you a discount. 20 thousand dollars! If I don't see that by tonight, you can expect to go to jail!"I nodded with feigned gratitude. "Okay, okay, I'll transfer it right now!"I added, "Please, I beg you, don't call the police. If I go to jail, my life is ruined!"Brianna's face lit up with an uncontrollable look of triumph when she saw how easily I agreed.Nicole, who was even more smug, said, "That's my grandson, already making money for me even before birth!"She then told me her account number, and I transferred the 20 thousand dollars.Once Nicole received the money, her face broke into a wide grin. She looked at me with disdain and said arrogantly, "I'm doing this for your own good, young lady. A woman who spends recklessly is only hurting her future. Giving us this money is a good step forward. You sho

The next morning, when I opened the door, I was greeted by a pile of trash right in front of it, along with a terrible smell coming from the door.Nicole and the pregnant Brianna were sitting across the hall, casually nibbling on chips and giving me the side-eye.So this was the game they were playing?I glanced at the security camera by my door. How stupid could these two be?I picked up the trash from my doorstep and threw it straight back to their door. The trash bag was so poorly made that it tore in midair, spilling garbage all over Nicole and Brianna. The pair screamed in unison, both shrieking like banshees.I quickly slammed my door shut behind me. It wasn't long before I heard heavy knocking on the door. Peeking through the peephole, I saw Elliot, along with a couple of security guards.I opened the door, and Elliot looked serious."Ms. Martin, we received a complaint from the owner of unit 402. They say you assaulted a pregnant woman. Please cooperate with our inves
