Chapter Eight
As Pearl joined the others in raising their glasses to toast Max's celebration, she noticed Mai stepping out with an expression of anxiety and confusion. Mai's face was pale, a hint of uncertainty in her eyes, and a touch of hesitation.
"Mai, what's wrong? You look so pale," Pearl showed concern for Mai, reaching out her hand as if to touch Mai's forehead. However, Mai pulled back, gazing straight into Pearl's eyes.
Pearl was taken aback by this unexpected rejection, especially considering Mai was her close friend. Mai awkwardly chuckled and avoided Pearl's attempt to make contact. "Sorry, I'm just really tired today. Work has been overwhelming, and I've been working overtime so frequently. I haven't had enough rest, which is why I look like this."
