Ava

The hand around my neck unclenches as I take in a painful gasp of air.
“Ava!” I hear Leonel, his frantic voice like a magnet, pulling me. “Ava, are you okay?!”
“Leo-nel,” I wheeze out, shuffling to stand on unsteady feet so I can go to him, but before I can even raise myself off the bed, Jaxon has a hand around my waist.
He crashes my body to his, locking me against him.
“Either of you fucking scream again and I kill your friend,” he says, talking about Oliver and the kill switch.
Panic sears through me, a different panic than the one I felt for myself.
I see Leonel’s face finally, his eyebrows drawn up in worry, the grey in his eyes full of fear.
I’ve never seen him afraid, not once.
“You hurt her?!” Leonel booms, his deep voice incredulous. “I’ll fucking kill you.”
“You will do no such thing, Leonel Sinclair,” Jaxon says, panting from the adrenaline flowing through him. “I’m leaving with my girlfriend, like I was supposed to weeks ago. I knew something was off the moment
