WELL PLANNED
The scream tore from Gemini's throat, raw and primal. Sweat plastered her hair to her forehead as another contraction ripped through her body.
"That's it, Gemini, you're doing great," the doctor encouraged from the foot of the bed. "I can see the head. One more big push!"
Penelope stood beside her, gripping her hand tightly. "You've got this, girl. Just one more."
Gemini looked up at her friend, tears streaming down her face. "Simon should be here," she gasped. "He promised he'd be here."
The pain surged again, and she bore down with all her might, a strangled cry escaping her lips.
Then, suddenly, there was relief—and the piercing wail of a newborn filled the room.
"It's a girl!" the doctor announced, lifting the squirming, red-faced infant. "A beautiful, healthy baby girl."
Gemini collapsed back against the pillows, exhausted but reaching for her daughter. The nurses quickly cleaned the baby and placed her on Gemini's chest.
