I've devoured almost every David Baldacci book out there, and 'Wish You Well' stands out like a quiet storm in his usual action-packed lineup. Most of his works, like the 'Memory Man' series or 'Absolute Power,' are adrenaline-fueled rides with conspiracies and high-stakes drama. 'Wish You Well' swaps sniper rifles for rolling Appalachian hills and legal thrillers for a raw, emotional coming-of-age story. It’s like Baldacci took off his thriller writer hat and put on a storyteller’s cloak. The prose here is slower, more lyrical, almost like he’s channeling Harper Lee instead of Tom Clancy. The focus isn’t on plot twists but on characters—Louisa and Oz feel so real, their struggles with grief and resilience hit harder than any courtroom showdown. Thematically, it’s a departure too. Baldacci usually explores corruption or justice systems, but 'Wish You Well' digs into family bonds and rural survival. The setting itself becomes a character, something you rarely see in his urban-centric works. Even the villains are different—no corporate moguls or assassins here, just human pettiness and greed. It’s proof Baldacci can flex beyond genre constraints, though I miss the pulse-pounding tension of his usual stuff. This book feels like a love letter to his roots, and while it’s not his typical crowd-pleaser, it’s maybe his most heartfelt.

'Wish You Well' is Baldacci’s oddball—a sentimental detour from his crime-heavy catalog. I love his usual fast-paced stuff, but this one’s like finding a handwritten note in a pile of legal documents. The Appalachia setting, the kid protagonists, the lack of explosions… it’s all weirdly refreshing. Not his best, but definitely his bravest.

At the peak of my career, my husband slapped me in public.  With a look of disgust, he said, “Tess, you’re pathetic. You made Grace fail the class because you’re jealous. Don’t you know she’s applying for a scholarship?” Caught off guard, I stumbled and fell to the ground, clutching my stomach as pain surged through me. I knelt there, begging him to take me to the hospital.  However, all he did was swat my hand away and sneer. “Quit the act! Aren’t you just a useless woman who can’t get pregnant?” At that moment, my heart felt like it had shattered into a million pieces. It wasn’t long before bystanders intervened, insisting on taking me to the hospital. Unfortunately, it was too late to save the baby. Once the surgery was over and the reality of what had happened sank in, I turned to him and demanded a divorce.
