Chapter: A Glimmer of hope
It’s almost midnight and I'm back at my usual spot in the living room. For some reason, the atmosphere here makes me think better or not sleep off in seconds. The difference between this night and the others is that instead of working on my new book, I’m searching for a dead labour union leader. Strange enough, no news outlet carried it, not even blogs or YouTube channels. It could be two things; the news is false or someone stopped it from circulating. The front door closes and I quickly close the tab and open a blank page which is meant to have the new chapter I should be working on. Aaron walks in, gives me a side glance before heading upstairs. I let out a shaky breath and focus on my laptop. The lights in the living room may be dim but the colour red on a white shirt is too pronounced to go undetected. I try to convince myself it is paint but after being on the other side of his gun, I knew it was blood.Almost an hour later, I manage to write half a page but I’m not so proud of

Chapter: A Plan Unfold
“Who were you talking to?”I feel my blood run cold as I look up from the laptop and see Mr Lynott smiling at me. I wonder if he heard the whole conversation but the smile on his face makes me want to think otherwise.“My cousin.” I try keeping a straight face but my hands shake slightly.“No personal calls during work hours Miss Corvin.” He cautions but he still has a smile on his face.“Sorry sir.” I let out a subtle sigh of relief. He waves his hand dismissively before looking around.“Where is Mr Wilson? He said he had an interesting scoop for me.”“He left hurriedly but I’ll send the work to the media team in a few minutes.” He gives me a thumbs up.“I’ll be off now.” As soon as the door closes behind him, I sink into the chair. I have to be careful. I didn’t want to imagine what would’ve been the outcome if he heard my conversation with Drew. I doubt it would have ended with me getting fired.I skim through the work and am about to hit send when a couple of words catch my eyes.

Chapter: The Plot Thickens
My heart beats loudly as I stare at the burner phone. It can be anything and I didn’t want to jump into conclusions immediately so I decide to take the stapler and shut the drawer back. My phone rings and it’s Drew.“Hey.” I say quickly.“He went to meet up with his mistress. I ran a background check and found out that she is his wife’s friend. It’s actually messy.” Drew jokes. I realize that the burner phone could be how he communicates with the source. I wonder if I should inform Drew about it but I decide to leave it for Aaron to decide.“Oh, I will keep looking around then.” I say before hanging up. I consider taking the phone with me but it is my first day of work, I can’t afford to screw up just yet. The shrill sound of a ringtone echoes in the room and I already have an idea where it’s coming from. I leave the office to avoid being suspected. If I’m going to get the phone for Aaron later then Mr Wilson doesn’t have to find out I know about the phone.***It’s 11pm and I've dec

Chapter: The Devil's In The Details
MIA’S POVIt’s my first day of work and I’m determined not to mess it up. The first sign of this being a good day is waking up before my alarm. The second one is walking into the closet and seeing a variety of outfits. It takes me a while before I finally settle for a simple outfit. I gaze into the mirror, smoothing out my grey blouse. It fits perfectly, accentuating my curves. My legs look sleek and professional in these sheer panty hose, and my above-the-knee skirt fits perfectly. I adjust the skirt, making sure it's sitting just right. I give myself a nod of approval - I'm ready to take on the day. I let my hair fall free and dab a little lipstick on my lips.Breakfast is already on the table by the time I get downstairs. Stella looks at me with a small smile on her face and that is all the approval I need for my outfit. I notice the single plate and my gaze subconsciously moves to the stairs.“Mr Lombardi left early.” Stella says, wiping her hands on her apron. I nod my head slowl

Chapter: A Web Of Deceit
AARON’S POVMy men outside see me approaching and they all scamper away. My blood is boiling and I know someone’s blood is about to be spilled. I enter the warehouse and see John holding a man against the wall. He notices my presence and lets him go. My eyes move to the exhibit in the middle of the room. The body on the chair still looks alive but it’s impossible with the gaping hole in her head. I feel my pulse thrum and my vision glazes.“So someone walked in here and killed our one solid link and nobody saw the perpetrator?” I ask in a low tone. My men look at each other nervously and I chuckle. “Who’s in charge of looking after her?” I ask and John pushes the man he was strangling earlier forward.Without thinking twice, I cock my gun and shoot his two legs. He lets out a blood curdling scream and I notice the other men move backwards, except John. “And the security footage?” John steps forward with a laptop in his hands. It only shows a man in black enter the warehouse and pull a

Chapter: The Interview
I think I’ve used up my luck for the day.First, I barely make it on time for the interview.Second, I miraculously pass the exam.Listening to the two other candidates answer their questions proficiently, I realize that the gig is up. I try to compose a believable story for Mr Lombardi. At least this time around, it doesn’t involve lies. I did make it to the final stage. “Now for the final question for the three of you,” the old interviewer who sat in the middle says, adjusting his glasses. “Let’s assume you often receive anonymous tips from an undisclosed source and they capture the public interest but the downside is that it affects the reputation of someone rich. What would you do?” He ends the question with a smirk on his face. I begin to wonder what exactly he wants as a reply. The first candidate clears his throat and sits up, “I believe the only right answer is to not release anymore of the defamatory article and find out the truth. After all, it is our job to be honest to th
