Chapter: Chapter 51
To the Esteemed Council of the Collegiate Alliance of Vyhelm,I write this letter with a heavy sense of responsibility, and not a small measure of regret, regarding the fate of Assistant Professor Patrina Warden, recently on sabbatical for fieldwork among the elves.Despite all reasonable precautions, Miss Warden encountered grave difficulties shortly after leaving the Sylvanae Archive. During her intended passage to the Greenways, she tricked by unscrupulous dwarven merchants and was forcibly kidnapped. She was then transported to the City of Limdrion, known as the port of dark elven power, where she was prepared for transfer to a dark elven noble house. It is a testament to Miss Warden’s resourcefulness and resolve that she escaped her initial captors and survived in disguise within Limdrion for a time. However, she fell into the canal during an attempted flight, and was subsequently claimed (in accordance with local custom) by Nyxios Dolos Keltos, Scion of House Keltos. Though at f

Chapter: Chapter 50
The greatroom at House Keltos glittered in anticipation. Rays of late morning filtered through the wide windows, casting jewel-tone patterns on dark wood and silvered trim. Every surface from the glass windows, to the polished floors, to the intricate tapestries, seemed burnished brighter in celebration of the day.At the head of the long table stood Nyxios, his arm draped naturally around Patrina’s waist. They looked every bit the honored pair: Nyxios poised, his collar and the tattoo at his throat making a visible promise; Patrina beside him, eyes bright, in place of the collar was the purple magic marking.Quasros raised his glass in silent toast. “To bonds truly chosen,” he said, voice low but clear enough that even the servants at the sideboard stilled to listen.Thalana lounged at Patrina’s other side, her bobbed hair slicked back and her midnight gown hiding the last of her healing bruises. She grinned, nudging Patrina with a conspiratorial elbow. “Didn’t think you had it in yo

Chapter: Chapter 49
Once the doors of the Keltos mansion closed behind them, Patrina felt full of relief. The lamplight along the Keltos corridor flickered blue as Nyxios swept Patrina up, holding her as if she weighed nothing at all. She felt his heart hammering through his shirt, each beat matched by the soft, hungry kisses he pressed to her forehead, her cheeks, the tip of her nose.“You’re safe,” he murmured, his voice a thread on the edge of breaking. “You’re really back.”Each step up the grand staircase was measured yet impatient, like he couldn’t decide whether to savor the moment or rush her home before the world changed its mind. Patrina let her head fall against his shoulder, breathing in incense on his skin. She wondered if this was what belonging felt like. It didn’t seem so bad.He carried her straight to the master chamber, never releasing her. The chamber was awash in dim purple light, curtains drawn tight against the chaos outside. Here, the furniture was sturdy, dark, and arranged for c

Chapter: Chapter 48
The window rattled in its frame, hinges whining as a concussive boom split the silence. A howl of pain or maybe rage, rose from somewhere below in the Maelis mansion, sharp enough to prickle the hairs at the nape of Patrina’s neck. She pressed closer to the tiny window, but the thick ironwork let in little more than the shimmer of blue light from the inner courtyard.Above the din, Nyxios’s voice rang out. A snarl punctuated another crash. The walls shook under the barrage of spells. Fire magic and shadow were grinding up against each other, sparking below. It was chaos outside the room. Heavy, armored footsteps rushed past, then doubled back. The tremor of bodies striking wood, the whiplash crack of a whip, and underneath it all, someone screamed. She braced herself, one hand on the spindly desk for support, the other clutching the indigo collar still locked tight at her throat. Her mind cobbled together the possibilities: was this Nyxios, fighting through the guards for her? Would T

Chapter: Chapter 47
Nyxios moved through Limdrion like gathering thunder. He’d sent word to both embassies: Patrina was trapped in House Maelis, the claim stolen, every tradition broken. If the other elves wished to intervene, they’d better be fast.Battle leather hugged his frame, armored at neck and wrist, dark as the spaces between stars. Thalana matched him stride for stride. She’d tied her bobbed hair in place and coiled her whip along her hip. Thalana matched his mood, her hair short black bob haircut was slicked close to her skull,Her jaw set, gaze straight ahead. They were a pair that drew eyes from the moment they stepped onto the canal’s edge.Neither showed any hesitation, even as the guards on the parapet barked warnings down at House Maelis. Guards lined up behind the iron gates. They weren’t for show; short swords gleamed in the half-light. Nyxios didn’t waste time. With a voice that needed no magic to project, he called:“Open the gates! I am Nyxios Dolos Keltos. I am here for what’s mine

Chapter: Chapter 46
The ballroom was not meant for comfort. It was a cage masquerading as celebration.Patrina hesitated on the threshold, the servants flanking her. The silence was layered: first the hush of dark velvet and polished obsidian, then the fevered whisper of stringed instruments on a raised dais. Night’s blue seeped in through cut glass windows, tinting everything, with House Maelis’s signature chill. At the room’s far end, Mavros waited. His long hair was tied high in an elaborate ponytail. The set of his jaw and the way he watched her told more than words. Four musicians played on, their faces blank. When she didn’t step forward right away, Mavros smiled twisted while he raised his hands.Fire bloomed from his palms, racing up the arms of the chandelier above. The fixture ignited, candles lighting in dramatic succession, casting a shimmer of gold and blue across the floor.“Come to me,” Mavros commanded.Patrina set her stance. “No.”Pain knifed out instantly. Her muscles trembled, her kne
