Chapter: TroublesCHAPTER 49ISABELLE’S POV“Are you sure about this?” I questioned, my thumb hovering over the glass rim. “I can afford to waste my chances here.”I paused for some time, listening quietly. “Yes! Sure thing, give me a few hours and I’d be there. .” The call ended and I knew I had no time to waste. Immediately I grabbed my purse and laughed straight for the door. The ride was quieter than I thought. No traffic or anything to distract me from my growing thoughts. My fingers clutched the wheel tightly as I thought to myself. “This better be worth it.”After a long hour of driving, I pulled up outside a worn beat up building. On it was a huge sign that boldly wrote ‘WOMEN’S SHELTER’. I glanced around the area a few times after I jumped down from my truck. If it weren’t for the sign, any other person would as well mistake this place for what was abandoned. Two women sat in the corridor knitting, they looked to be in their late 60s , one in particular only gave a nasty look as I a

Chapter: DoublesCHAPTER 48JENNA’S POV“Glad to see you’re awake.” The doctor strolled in. “How do you feel today?”“Well, okay I guess. When do I get to go home?”“Yeah about that. You’ll be due for a formal psych assessment soon, then we’ll start planning towards your discharge.”“What’s do you mean by psych assessment?” I lifted a brow. “Not to worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds.” He chuckled. “It’s just protocol we take after trauma like yours”I nodded my head slowly. “Although you’ve shown great signs of improvement, we only need to be sure you’re healing quite well.”Healing. Was I really healing? Was I willing to let all that happened slide away just like that?Maybe doc was right, I also needed to be sure I was healed from all my scars. Staying back in this hospital felt sickening, but I had no choice. This was my only way to get my mental state back and recover fully. After the doctor left, the room fell silent again and I couldn’t stand it, so I decided to take a little walk around

Chapter: Building blocksCHAPTER 47ISABELLE’S POV“I’ll be back soon, after that we’d begin with the ultrasound.” The nurse said. The minute she was about to step out of the door, I quickly grabbed onto her hand. “Please wait.”She turned back, staring at me with a guarded expression. I took in a few deep breaths, before revealing what I’d told no one till now. “I’m not actually pregnant.”“Excuse me?” Her face froze. She looked utterly confused. I straightened my body up on the bed. “I’m not pregnant,” I repeated. “Please…I know this might sound a bit crazy, but the man outside has no idea about what I just told you.”Her expression remained confused. “I need your help please. If those test results come out negative, he’d know I was never with child.”She moved back a few paces, shaking her head uncontrollably. “No I can’t. I..I could lose my license or worse even go to prison.”“You won’t, I promise it.”Her look still screamed uncertainty. She turned to look back towards the door and then back at me.

Chapter: Little pieces CHAPTER 46 ISABELLE’S POV A day had passed since jenna was brought back to the hospital. Rob had refused to leave her side and I didn’t dare to leave his side also. I stepped into the ward, rehearsing what act of worry I’d pull today. She was awake, her head propped against Rob as they spoke in inaudible tones, before she turned to notice my presence. “Isabelle” she called out with a smile. My heart sank immediately. Has she gotten her memories back? “You….you remember me?” I asked, feigning breathlessness. “Of course I do, silly.” She replied in between chuckles as she gestured for me to come into a hug. “Arghh! I’ve missed you so much.” “I really can’t tell you how hard it’s been” my voice cracked slightly. “After what had happened that day at the party, I couldn’t bare it.” I pulled away slowly and reached for her hand. “I felt so sad, Jenna. Everyday I hoped for you to get better and seeing you like this now….it’s like a miracle.” My stomach twisted

Chapter: Back in time CHAPTER 45 NARRATOR POV Under the bright fluorescent lights, photos of Elijah’s body were plastered across a transparent board. Photos of the warehouse, Jenna and an unidentified suspect all connected with each other. A light knock fell on the door. “Come in!” One of the forensics scientists approached detective Morgan with a clipboard. “You better be coming with good news” Morgan blurted before the scientist came into close proximity with him. “Well we’ve finished processing the scene and the samples that were provided, and there’s not much apparently.” Morgan’s voice was tight. “What do you by ‘not much’.” “We found no foreign fingerprints except that of the dead man, no DNA, nothing on Jenna’s restraints either. Everything else doesn’t seem to have been tampered with by a third party.” “How is that possible? Do you know what this means?” Just as the scientists were about to give a reply , an officer walked into the office. “Morning chief! We found survei

Chapter: Shadows and echoes CHAPTER 44 NARRATOR POV A few Police cruisers alongside an ambulance encircled the warehouse. Red and blue lights flashed against the structure, creating a temporary glow. Yellow tape went up fast. Officers approached slowly, guns in the air while moving with caution. “Fan out.” Detective Morgan called out. “Keep your eyes on the area and call if you find anything.” “Roger!” Two officers replied briefly before stepping away into the shadows. Detective Morgan continued to walk further, sweeping his flashlight across the dusty floor. Eventually, he found himself walking down into the cellar. The fresh smell of blood stung his nose, as his eyes met the ground with horror. “Over here” he yelled. “We’ve got a body.” A few officers rushed towards his voice. Their faces also had the same expression as dey active Morgan’s did. They stood around the body in circles, while Morgan crouched to take a closer look. “Three shots in the head. It seems our killer really wante
