Chapter: Chapter Forty
DaphneThe ringing of my phone dragged me out of my reverie. I picked up the phone faster than I should have. The caller ID read ‘Love’. I creased my brows in slight disappointment before happiness filled my heart. I hurriedly answered the call and pressed the phone to my ear with shaky hands. “Ca…Calla?” I called out softly. “Daph. It's been forever!!!” A smile spread across my lips as I steadied the phone in my grasp. “Oh God, Calla. I was thinking of you…” I said, straightening up on the bed.“I missed you sis…” she said, her voice calm and soothing. I had almost forgotten the effect her voice had on me. “Are you okay?” I hesitated. The answer sat heavy on my tongue. “I…I…don't know…” I whispered, my chest tightening. Everything felt wrong. There was a pause at the other end. Brief but noticeable. “Does he…does he…treat you badly?” she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.“Not really…but…”“Listen to me, Daphne,” she began. Her voice shifted from calm and flowery t

Chapter: Chapter Thirty-nine
DaphneCrash. The sound of blade against blade reverberated across the training ground. Sweat covered my face and my breath was uneven for so many reasons. It's been a week since Salvador left and although he seemed tough enough to handle his matters I couldn't shake off the clinging feeling of anxiety in my chest. Rosa’s revelation only intensified my uneasiness. I shouldn't care. I pushed the thought of Salvador aside. “That should be all for today, Signora,” Stef said with a slight tilt of his head. “You've gotten much better at welding a dagger. Next, you'll be taught how to use a shotgun. I hope you do not have a problem with that?” I shook my head and bowed to him as well. “Thanks for the training Sir Stefano,” he nodded twice and walked in the opposite direction. In the short time I trained with Stefano, I understood that he didn't like small talk; he only spoke during sessions, after which he became like a mute. I sighed and rubbed off some of the sweat from my face

Chapter: Chapter Thirty-eight
Salvador (Alter ego)“Don, the jet has been prepared.” Luca conveyed through the receiver. I narrowed my eyes at the road and replied,“I have another buisness...” then flung the phone to the passenger seat. The car was quiet. Except for the dull hum of the engine and the occasional sound from moving vehicles. A thought crossed my mind. Hazel eyes. My brows creased at the thought, but I didn't dwell on it. As much as I wanted to quietly reach my jetpad and get out of there a particular face kept messing with my plans. The face flashed in my mind again, causing my hands to tighten on the steering wheel. I turned on the speaker and allowed some classical music to bless my ears with its blend of instrumental harmony. That should do it. I rested my left elbow against the window and guided the steering with my right arm. The music helped… until more images flashed in my mind yet again. Hazel eyesPlump lips Silky auburn hair My brows creased as I swerved the car off the drive

Chapter: Chapter Thirty-seven
Daphne “ The Don looked like a girl when he was little...” Rosa began. The sudden confession forced a ‘pfft’ from my lips. Was that rude? I clamped my lips shut and clenched my throat to force the laugh from spilling through. But, I couldn't picture it. Salvador looking like a girl? How? He was a breathtaking man, yes, but undeniably masculine. The sharp cut of his jaw, the scar running down his face, Nope, there was nothing soft about him. “Sorry…” I muttered quickly. Rosa cleared her throat and continued as if she hadn't noticed. “For that very reason, he was adored by his mother, Madame Montessori. She doted on him the way some mothers dote on their daughters.” She chopped the carrots with a little less concentration and a tight smile plastered on her face. “But his father…” she paused drawing in a deep breath. “ His father hated him for that same reason. He favoured his first son, Matteo, more, and shoved a knife in Salvador's hands before he learnt what it meant to ho

Chapter: Chapter Thirty-Six
Daphne “The weapon is an extension of the arm that wields it, not just a tool, Signora.” my teacher, whom I found out was named Stefano pointed out, trying his best not to yell at my hundredth failure at wielding the dagger properly.I had chosen a dagger because it was small and seemed easy to wield, but who would have thought it was one of the hardest? I groaned in frustration and positioned myself squarely before Stef, mimicking what I've been taught. I had no problem handling a firearm; I did it perfectly. I've held guns several times growing up as a Mafia daughter, but I've never had the luxury to train with weapons. If I had, I would have been able to defeat Stephen easily. “Straighten your shoulders. View me as an enemy.” He said, using a cane to align my stance to what he wanted.“Your fingers keep trembling. Get a hold. An enemy would not hesitate to attack if they sense fear.” He held my fist on the dagger and tried to steady my trembling wrist. I didn't even know why I

Chapter: Chapter Thirty-five
Salvador (Alter Ego)Blood. More blood splashed over the blood already painting my face. The man grew limp in my grasp and my eyes widened.Blade killed his ally. To think I believed I was crazy. I held the man's limp body in my hands and pointed the gun at Blade who seemed unbothered. The other men in the room flinched from the sight. They must finally understand the gravity of testing Blade. I was foolish like them once. My lips parted and a harsh laugh escaped them. “ You really killed one of your people…How interesting,” I said amidst laughter. The gun in my hand clicked but no bullet came through. Did this idiot threaten me with an empty gun? What a situation. “ I can do anything to get what I want Butcher. Anything.” “Get him!” He commanded the three Mafianos and they charged at me. I tossed the dead man's body towards them and fell backwards. “Shit!!! Don't let him get away.” I heard him say against the wind blowing at my ears. I landed on a car, making a dent in i
