Chapter: Chapter 7: Dying in Happiness
Adrian — First person POV Don't look. Eyes on top. You can do it. I can't do it! Screw it! My mind roamed with words, endlessly as I fought to get my control back. I had always had the best composure whenever I was attracted to anyone. But this man was driving me nuts. His scent, everything was appealing and good lord…why did he have to be in front of me? The universe was clearly mocking me for keeping him employed longer than I should have. Raise your damn head, Adrian. Leave his body alone. I refocused my eyes on the computer screen. On the numbers on my screen. The charts. Financial data. Anything to get my mind back to normal. Behind me Evan stood and adjusted his tie. Then he wiped his hands on his pants, and leaned against the desk to read something again. He was practically unaware of what was happening to me. My eyes followed him. Every small movement caught my attention. Every shift of fabric. Every breath. My body responded before my senses could catch up.I stood u

Chapter: Chapter 6: Control
Adrian Wolfe – First PersonThe buyout attempt wasn’t any concern of mine. Not yet.People tried to buy Wolfe Capital every year. Most of them fail before they ever learn what they’re up against. The room emptied out gradually as the news was disseminated. Executives were arguing about their defensive strategies, lawyers were arguing about emergency filings, and financial analysts were rushing to track the purchases of Wolfe Capital stocks.I waited five minutes. And then I got up from my seat. “That’s enough for today.”Several people looked up at me. One of the board members spoke quickly. “We still need to act immediately.”I was tired and didn't need any more drama. “We will tomorrow.”“But the buyers?”I answered firmly. “They will still exist tomorrow.”The room was silent once more.I looked at Evan. He had been studying the market data while everyone else was arguing. He was so intent on the data that it was almost distracting him from everything else around him.“You’re do

Chapter: Public Execution
Adrian Wolfe- First Person The business coup attempt lasted eleven minutes.I observed the emergency board meeting from my position at the head of the table.Executives whispered among themselves. Legal team members passed out printed motions to the board members.Someone had prepared the motions beforehand. That meant the attack on me had been planned well before today. How interesting.I placed my hands on the table and perused the document on the table.Motion to remove Adrian Wolfe as CEO of Wolfe Capital. One of the board members cleared his throat.“Adrian, considering the current crisis surrounding the Harrington lawsuit and the accusations leveled against you and your analyst, the board feels new leadership might be necessary.”I leaned back into my chair. “And by ‘the board’ you mean you.”He bristled. “Several members are of the same opinion.”“Name them.”He was quiet. As expected. He was a coward. Across the table, Evan sat near the legal team while reviewing a stack of

Chapter: Too Close
Evan Carter - First Person The media storm broke loose within twenty minutes. Phones on the entire executive floor were vibrating non-stop as messages flooded every screen within the building. Assistants rushed through the halls with printed messages, security guards talked frantically on their radios, and someone from the finance department yelled about the stock market plummeting. I stood inside Adrian Wolfe’s office and observed the mayhem through the glass walls. Apparently, becoming the center of a billionaire’s lawsuit had side effects. Adrian was calm. He was behind his desk studying documents and occasionally typing short replies on his phone. The situation didn’t seem to faze him at all, which was impressive given that half the financial media industry had declared me the villain of the week. "You're staring," he said without looking up. "I'm observing." "You've been standing there for ten minutes." "I'm making sure not to make things worse." His mouth curled u

Chapter: Damage Control
Evan Carter - First Person The room was suddenly full of activity. Phones rang. Investors argued. Legal experts rushed to the far side of the room while frantically working their laptops and whispering figures to each other. I stood there, trying to comprehend what had just occurred, as the headline continued to echo in my brain. Corporate sabotage. Against me. Which meant my first day at Wolfe Capital had just become a whole lot more serious. Adrian didn’t yell, didn’t slam his hand on the table, and didn’t argue with anyone like I had expected. He simply looked around the room. Then he spoke. “Everyone, stop.” And suddenly, everyone in the room stopped. Twenty people in a room suddenly turned silent. Adrian Wolfe placed both hands on the table. And looked toward the legal team. “How quickly will the market react?” “Within an hour,” they answered. “And the lawsuit?” “They will seek emergency hearings tomorrow morning,” they answered. Adrian nodded. And then looked t

Chapter: The Boardroom War
Evan Carter - First Person Lord, help me! My legs ache. Doesn't this man know I have legs? I need a chair. I stretched my legs but he didn't notice. Why should he? I stood in front of the executive boardroom, holding a tablet and a dilemma in my chest. I had just destroyed a three hundred million dollar deal in front of everyone in the room. And now the CEO of this firm had decided that I needed to be brought in front of the people who funded this entire firm. So much for blabbering. Why me? It was a tense time in this hallway. Everyone knew I had gone into a meeting with some of the best strategists in this firm and ruined their merger. And now I was being brought in front of everyone in this firm. The new analyst humiliates everyone in a meeting, and the CEO drags him in front of an investor meeting. Classic. Just another day in the life of a man who had worked in this firm for less than three hours. And then suddenly, the doors to the boardroom swung open. Adrian
