My Safest Danger

My Safest Danger

"Getting married to another man... in the same dress I got you?" The corner of his lips curved slightly. If I walked away right now, I'd only be giving my enemies, seated among the guests, exactly what they wanted. My pride wouldn't allow it. His arm snaked around my waist, pulling me closer. "I told you we'd be getting married soon." His gaze darkened. "You thought I was joking?" … Skylar Morrison thought she had the perfect life. Her fiance's betrayal didn't break her. Now someone wants her gone from the company she fought so hard to build. The company comes first. Her life comes second. Then Damien appears-an infuriating man who screams danger. She should run from him, yet no matter how hard she tries, he can't seem to stay away. As danger closes in, so do they, discovering that behind their broken hearts are wounds only the other can heal.

Chapter: Invited Trouble
Damien's POV Bodies danced to the music blasting from the speakers while bartenders squeezed through the crowd, carrying trays of cocktails. I leaned back against the sofa in the VIP lounge, resting one arm across the backrest as I watched the crowd below. "Man, I'm hitting the dance floor. It's boring with you here," Damon slurred, snatching a bottle of whiskey from the table as he got to his feet. I didn't bother looking at him. "Try not to start a fight. And don't make me search for you." He laughed, staggering onto the dance floor, his long hair flowing behind him. A bartender walked toward me, placing a bottle of wine on the table. He uncapped it and poured half of it into a glass. "Everything alright, sir?" I grabbed the glass and took a sip, giving him a slight nod. My eyes drifted across the dance floor, searching for one particular face. "Boss, she's here," Marco, the head of my security, muttered through the earpiece. I chugged it all down, letting the

Chapter: Eyes in the Dark
Skylar's POV My eyes followed the stranger as he walked toward a parked SUV. A man opened the door for him, and he climbed inside. But before the door could close, his gaze locked onto mine again. As the car drove away, he didn't look away; his eyes remained fixed on me until the vehicle disappeared down the street. I blinked, still trying to make sense of the strange feeling his presence gave me. My attention shifted to Jace, who was still on the floor. He stood up immediately, dusting himself off. I eyed him, moving hurriedly toward the entrance, but my hand was grabbed before I could take another step. What the fuck is wrong with this bastard? "Skylar..." I yanked my hand away from his grip. Joan rushed in, her dress flowing behind her. "Why are you holding her hand? Don't tell me you're actually pleading already." Her eyes were cold, glaring hard at him. "It's none of your business, Joanne," Jace cut in. He faced me, his grip on my arm tightening. "Hear me out

Chapter: Masks Off
Skylar's POV The red flags were there all along, but I completely ignored them. Jace stood behind Ava, my cousin, his hands gripping her hips firmly as he thrust slowly into her. My legs refused to move. He was so lost in her that he didn't notice me standing at the door. Ava's eyes found mine, and the corner of her lips lifted. She didn't even flinch, like she had been expecting me all along. I pressed my lips together, fighting the tightness in my chest. "J-Jace." His head jerked up. He cursed under his breath and pulled up his trousers. Ava let out a hiss as she adjusted her gown He grabbed his belt resting beside the sink and fastened it around his waist without taking his eyes off me. "Don't try to make a scene over something every man does, Skylar." "You don't even feel sorry?" "Men aren't meant to stay with just one woman." He ran a hand through his hair. "I'll still marry you and keep Ava, okay? If you're smart enough, you'll accept what every woman eventu

Chapter: A Different Kind of Threat
Skylar's POV I had enemies, but receiving Threat at my own mailbox? That was new. "Your time is numbered." I stared at the small paper for a while before tossing it aside. This wasn't the first time I'd received such a threat. Being a public figure came with a lot of problems. For some people, my existence alone was enough to make them despise me. Dropping my bag on the dressing table, I sat in a chair, slipping on my favorite heels. My phone rang just as I straightened. Mia. I fought back a smile, smoothing the skirt of my dress. "What's popping?" "Just checking to make sure you're still alive after all that drinking yesterday. By the way, Joan is coming over, we're heading to your aunt's house warming party together." "After ghosting us for days. That girl needs some spanking." I shook my head glancing at the clock. I'll see you guys later at the party, Jace is heading to pick me up." Her laughter echoed through the speaker. "What?" "Nothing." She chuckled. "
