My Safest Danger

My Safest Danger

"Getting married to another man... in the same dress I got you?" The corner of his lips curved slightly. If I walked away right now, I'd only be giving my enemies, seated among the guests, exactly what they wanted. My pride wouldn't allow it. His arm snaked around my waist, pulling me closer. "I told you we'd be getting married soon." His gaze darkened. "You thought I was joking?" … Skylar Morrison thought she had the perfect life. Her fiance's betrayal didn't break her. Now someone wants her gone from the company she fought so hard to build. The company comes first. Her life comes second. Then Damien appears-an infuriating man who screams danger. She should run from him, yet no matter how hard she tries, he can't seem to stay away. As danger closes in, so do they, discovering that behind their broken hearts are wounds only the other can heal.

Chapter: Would He Be Okay?
Skylar's POV I stared at the ceiling, blinking as the event continued playing through my mind. There had been no proper explanation of Damien's condition. His brother had insisted that we fly over, saying that Damien would be taken care of here. The last thing I could remember was dragging my exhausted body onto the jet. Now, I was in my room with no idea how much time had passed or what had happened while I was unconscious.Joan sat at the edge of the bed, her brows furrowed. “Are you okay? You were tossing and turning, drenched in sweat. Did you have a nightmare?”Pulling the duvet away from my legs, I slowly sat up, rubbing my temples as a dull ache spread through my head. “I'm fine.”I limped toward my closet, spotting my luggage on the floor.“Are you looking for something?” Joan asked, closing the distance between us.“My phone,” I murmured, digging through it until my fingers closed around it. My eyes moved across the screen as dozens of missed calls and messages from my aunt

Chapter: Unconscious
Skylar's POVI raised my head from Jace's chest, watching as the paramedics lifted Damien onto the stretcher and rushed him into the ambulance. Those dark, annoying eyes were closed, with blood all over his body. I wanted him to open them. To lift his head, climb down from the stretcher, laugh at me and tell me it was nothing. Bile rose to my throat, and I bent forward, vomiting.A hand gripped my shoulder, pulling me upright. Joan stood over me, her eyes moving across my bloodstained clothes while Jace watched us, keeping a distance. A paramedic grabbed my elbow, helping me toward the second ambulance.Joan climbed in beside me, squeezing my fingers until I drifted into sleep.I woke up to a female doctor leaning down beside me. She inserted a needle into my vein while another checked the bruising along my ribs.“Is she going to be okay?” Joan asked, turning to the doctor. The doctor nodded, squeezing my saline bag. “She's going to be fine.”I sat upright, wincing at the pain all ov

Chapter: Gunshot
Skylar's POV “Sky, close your eyes and pretend nothing is happening.” Damien slammed his foot onto the gas and yanked the steering wheel to the left. The movement threw me against the seat. I stared at the car in front of us, unable to tear my gaze away. The driver's door flew open. A masked man stepped out with a handgun raised toward our windshield. He lifted the gun higher, motioning for me to step out.My fingers curled around the edge of my seat as he advanced closer.“Make sure your seatbelt is fastened.” Damien pushed harder on the accelerator, his hand locked around the steering wheel as he drove toward the man.I nodded even though he couldn't see me, fumbling with the seatbelt until I pulled it against my chest. The gunman stepped closer, pulling the trigger.I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself for the pain, but before I could even register what was happening, Damien threw his body over mine, shoving me down. The sound of the gunshot echoed in the air.My eyes snapped

Chapter: Weak Point
Damien's POV She looked like she wanted to say something, but kept shut. We walked in silence until we stepped outside.I cleared my throat. “Marco has gone to your friend. They're getting their things ready, while Olivia is taking care of yours.”She stopped, her brows drawing together. “Wait, we're really leaving? Right now?” Her gaze lifted to the sky before settling back on me. “Have you checked the weather forecast?”“There's nothing wrong with the weather.” I slipped my hand into my pocket as I continued toward the parking lot. “The crew is waiting for us at the airport. But before we leave, I need to show you something.”My eyes dropped to her right hand. I reached for it and turned her palm over, examining some faint marks on her hand. “Skylar, who did this to you?”She pulled her hand free and stared down at it.“By any chance…” I looked from her knuckles to her face. “Was it the man in there?”She let out a nervous laugh and lowered her hands at her sides. “Come on, it's n

Chapter: Don't Touch His Wife
Skylar's POV The air in the hall turned tense as Jace came to a stop beside our table.“Advise me, Skylar,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Because I feel like doing something really stupid.”I frowned, trying to understand what he meant. His gaze drifted past my shoulder, locking onto Damien. His expression remained blank as he shot Damien a murderous glare.Without another word, he turned on his heel and marched toward the open door. Some of the guests rose to their feet, pointing toward the door. A few muttered curses, already moving away in disappointment.Ava dropped to the floor, clutching her gown, while Mia bolted from the other side of the hall, stopping beside her.“Don't go anywhere. I'll be right back.” Damien rose from the chair, his eyes fixed on the door.I placed a hand on my chest. For a minute, I thought Jace was going to do something stupid. Whatever he meant, I wasn't going to let it get to me.“What just happened?” Joan caught my hand and pulled me
