The Moon Never Chose Him
Ren Hale's wolf caught someone else's scent on his nineteenth birthday, in front of the whole pack, and I stopped existing to two hundred people in the space of one heartbeat. So I ran. For a year I hid at my grandmother's cottage at the edge of the territory and learned to fight like I actually meant it.
Then my mother died in a war Ren started and abandoned, and running stopped being something I could afford.
Home isn't home anymore. My pack surrendered rather than be wiped out, and a stranger named Alpha Kade Ashwood now sits where Ren's father used to sit. Ash is cold, exact, and impossible to read, and for reasons I can't explain, he already seems to know things about my mother that my own family never told me.
I came back to bury her and put what's left of us together. I did not come back to feel anything for the Alpha who now rules the ground I grew up on. But someone has been watching me since the night Ren humiliated me, someone who is sending me messages my family won't explain and following a trail that leads straight back to the lie that started the war. The insult that broke two packs apart wasn't real. Someone forged it. And the deeper I dig, the more it looks like the person who knows the most about that lie is the last man I ever expected to trust.

Chapter: Chapter 8I found Colt on the back porch the next morning, coffee going cold in his hands, staring out at nothing in particular. I sat down beside him and set the notebook on the railing between us without a word.He looked at it for a long moment before he even reached for it. That told me more than anything he could have said."You've seen this before." It wasn't a question. His jaw worked the way it always did right before he admitted something he didn't want to. "Once. A few weeks before she died." He picked it up carefully, like it might come apart in his hands. "She showed me one page. Made me promise not to tell Dad, not yet, not until she'd figured out who else was involved.""Involved in what, Colt?" I kept my voice low, even though nobody else was around to hear us. "What did she find?""I don't know all of it." He set the notebook back down like it had gotten too heavy to hold. "She said the message that started the war wasn't real. Said someone inside our own pack wrote it to look l

Chapter: Chapter 7I didn't show him the phone.By the time I hit the training grounds at ten, sweat already prickling along my spine before a single drill had started, I'd decided that whatever Ash knew, he could earn it the same way I planned to earn my own answers. Slowly. On my terms. He didn't ask again. That almost bothered me more than if he had."You're distracted." He caught my wrist mid-strike and held it there, not hard, just enough to stop me. "Where's your head?""Wherever it wants to be. You're not my therapist." I wrenched my arm back and reset my stance."No." The corner of his mouth did that almost thing again, gone before it fully arrived. "I'm worse. I actually expect results."We ran drills for another hour, and somewhere in the middle of it, chasing his footwork instead of overthinking my own, I forgot to be angry with him for a few minutes at a time. I hated how easily that happened. I hated more that some small, traitorous part of me had started looking forward to ten o'clock.Bre

Chapter: Chapter 6I didn't sleep. I lay there running the message over and over until the words stopped looking like words and started looking like a puzzle I didn't have all the pieces to yet.By morning I'd made a decision. I wasn't going to sit around waiting for whoever sent that text to decide when I got to know more. I was going to start asking questions myself, quietly, before anyone realized I was asking them at all.Colt was already gone on patrol by the time I got downstairs, so I went looking for the one place Bree had mentioned without meaning to: the old border line, where people still left flowers for my mother. The walk took twenty minutes through parts of the territory I barely recognized anymore. New fences. A watchtower that hadn't existed a year ago. The forest thinned out near the border and gave way to a clearing scarred with old burn marks, the ground still uneven in places where something had clearly been fought over hard.Someone had left fresh flowers at the base of a stone mar

Chapter: Chapter 5Bree found me before I found her.I was walking out of the training grounds the next afternoon, arms aching, still replaying the morning's session on a loop in my head, when a familiar voice sliced clean through my thoughts."Well, look who decided to come back to the land of the living."I turned. She was leaning against the fence, arms crossed, dark eyes unreadable at first, hair cropped short where I remembered a long braid. Bree Owusu. My best friend before I traded her for a boy who was never worth the trade."Bree." My mouth went dry. "I'm sorry. For all of it. For choosing him over you. I don't have an excuse."I braced my feet against the ground and waited for her to walk away. She would have had every right to.Instead, she pushed off the fence and crashed into me, arms wrapping so tight it knocked half the breath from my already tired lungs."I know." Her voice came muffled against my shoulder. "I forgave you a long time ago, idiot. When I heard what happened at that party,

Chapter: Chapter 4My father's fist hammered against my door hard enough to rattle the frame."Lola! You're going to be late!"I shot upright, heart slamming, half convinced for one confused breath that I was still back at Grandma Ruth's cottage. The unfamiliar ceiling above me set me straight fast."Why did nobody wake me up earlier?" I was already on my feet, yanking clothes out of a bag I'd never bothered to finish unpacking."Colt's got early patrol!" Dad's voice came muffled through the door. "Move it!"I threw on a black sports bra and leggings, one leg still half in, dragged a brush through my hair exactly once, and took the stairs two at a time, nearly flattening Grandma Ruth on the landing."Break my hip on these stairs, and I will come back and haunt you." She didn't even look up from the stove, elbow deep in batter. The training grounds sat a short run behind what used to be the Hale pack house, and I hit the tree line at a dead sprint, lungs already burning, legs pumping hard enough that the

Chapter: Chapter 3Grandma Ruth's old truck rattled over every rut in the road, and I spent the whole drive turning Colt's words over and over: there's a lot you don't know yet, like a stone I couldn't stop rubbing between my fingers until the edges wore smooth and still meant nothing."You don't have to have it figured out before we get there." She kept both hands steady on the wheel, eyes flicking to me every few miles like she was checking a wound for bleeding. "Whatever's waiting for us, we handle it when we see it."The checkpoint appeared at the edge of Hollow Pine territory just as the sky started bruising toward evening, and my stomach dropped before my brain caught up with why. There had never been a checkpoint there before. Two wolves stood beside a marked post in dark grey jackets, a crescent stitched over a bare branch on each shoulder, a symbol I'd never once seen on our land. One of them leaned down to the window, forearm scarred long and pale, built like something you'd have to go through
