Between The Lines
Skylar Moreno has spent her life putting everyone else first, surviving a demanding home life, an exhausting job, and responsibilities. When money runs out and her family's financial well-being depends on her, the only way forward leads back to the dangerous racing world she'd left behind.
Adrian Reyes begins as nothing more than a coworker; a distraction with a no-strings arrangement. He offers Sky an escape from responsibility -- something physical, and uncomplicated -- or so she tells herself. But when he slips out of reach, his absence exposes how deeply she has come to depend on the reckless intensity he represents. Drawn into midnight meets, illegal street races, and a project car giving her purpose...Sky begins to discover a world that gives her belonging and exhilaration. But also ties her heart to the man who first opened the door.
River Bennett -- her dearest friend and racing partner. River sees the parts of her she works hardest to conceal. Their connection grows through late-night conversations and the quiet trust of a project. Choosing him would mean risking the friendship that has become her safest refuge. As grief and Adrian's return pull Sky in opposite directions, she must confront whether she wants the consuming freedom of the past or the vulnerable stability of a future she's afraid to trust.
And then there's Asher Delgado, Poppy's guarded older brother, whose sharp humor and unexpected kindness make him harder for Sky to dismiss than she'd like. Another possibility -- or another complication to pull her in deeper into a world she's trying to survive.
Skylar must decide how much she's willing to risk to save the people she loves, and which love she's willing to lose. The roads that make her feel the most alive may also be the ones that take everything from her.

Chapter: Chapter Nineteen - The Art of Losing Control The parking garage smelled like it’s usual burnt rubber and gasoline. It was the kind of smell that clung to your clothes long after you left, settling into your hair and the fabric of your jacket. Somewhere above us, an engine revved hard enough to make the concrete ceiling vibrate. A second later, tires shrieked, followed by a wave of cheers that rolled through the levels below. I leaned forward in the Challenger’s passenger seat. “Okay, now I’m excited.” “You weren’t excited twenty minutes ago?: “I was cautiously optimistic.” “That’s a fancy way of saying you complained about the drive.” “I was providing constructive criticism.” “You told me I drove like I was avoiding potholes that weren’t there.” “I stand by that.” He laughed, turning the wheel as we followed the line of cars down the ramp. The event occupied two levels of the garage. The upper flow was packed with modified cars, motorcycles, and spectators, while the lower level had been sanctioned off for a drifting c

Chapter: Chapter Eighteen - Familiar Strangers There was something about a parking lot at night that made everything feel a little more cinematic. Maybe it was the way headlights bounced off the concrete pillars, or how every engine sounded twice as loud when it echoed between floors. Maybe it was the rows of modified cars, the people gathered around open hoods, or the occasional motorcycle slipping through the crowd. Whatever it was, the place had a certain atmosphere. And apparently, Poppy knew about it before the rest of us. “I’m telling you, this is going to be good.” I glanced over at her, shaking my head. “You’ve said that three times.” “Because you keep questioning me.” “I’m questioning your ability to find a parking garage.” Poppy turned around in her seat. “I found it, didn’t I?” River leaned forward. “Technically, the GPS found it.” “Technically,” Poppy said, “Nobody asked you.” Mia was following behind us in her RX-7, purple underglow already illuminating the pavement beneath her car. She’d been sending picture

Chapter: Chapter Seventeen - The Things We Don't Say I woke up smiling, which was almost irritating. Not because there was anything particularly wrong with smiling, but because I knew exactly why I was doing it. River. More specifically…his hands, his lips, and the fact that I had spent a questionable amount of time replaying the previous night’s goodbye instead of getting a reasonable amount of sleep. I rolled onto my back and started at the ceiling. This is becoming a problem… My phone buzzed on the nightstand. River: Morning, trouble. I smiled. Of course. Me: Can’t you be any more creative with your nicknames? River: Good morning…beautiful? Me: Absolutely not. River: So trouble it is. River: How did you sleep? Me: Eventually. River: Couldn’t stop thinking about me, hmm? I rolled my eyes. Me: Thinking about how annoying you are. River: Thinking about me is still thinking about me. I laughed into my pillow, another message appearing. River: For the record, I had a pretty good night. River: Especially with you there.

Chapter: Chapter Sixteen - Back in the Game By the time Friday night rolled around, River had developed a very specific problem. He was bored. Not regular bored, either. The kind of bored that involved standing in my driveway, staring at my Challenger as if it had personally offended him. “You’re hovering,” I said. “I’m inspecting.” “You’ve been inspecting for almost twenty minutes.” “It’s a complicated inspection.” “What’s wrong with it?” “Nothing.” “Then why are you looking at it like that?” River glanced over at me. “Because I miss driving something that isn’t a grocery-getter.” “Your Honda is getting fixed.” “Slowly.” “You’re the one who turned it into a financial science experiment.” “That’s a very disrespectful way to describe automotive restoration.” “It’s a very accurate way to describe your bank account.” “I come here looking for emotional support, and this is what I get.” “You came here to complain about my car.” “Your car is innocent, you’re the problem.” I shook my head and reached for the keys. “

Chapter: Chapter Fifteen - After The Fall The first thing I saw when I woke up was a notification from River. River: Good morning, trouble. I smiled before I could stop myself. Me: You’re alive. How disappointing. River: I was hoping for “I’m glad you’re okay,” but I’ll take what I can get. Me: Don’t get greedy. I rolled onto my back, staring at the ceiling. My mind went straight back to the canyon. The headlights. The gravel. The rear of River’s Honda just…hanging over an empty space. I could still see it if I closed my eyes. Me: How’s your hand? River: Attached. Slightly offended. Me: Your hand has opinions now? River: It’s been through a lot. Me: And the car? There was a longer pause. River: She’s alive. Her dignity is not. Me: That bad? River: Let’s just say the repair estimate has become a personal attack. Me: Sounds like someone else I know. River: Are you flirting with me before breakfast? I stared at the message. Me: I’m checking for neurological damage. River: In me or you? Me: Still collecting

Chapter: Chapter Fourteen - Close Calls Adrian: You wanna talk about what?”I wasn’t sure what I’d expected him to say, but somehow that wasn’t it.Me: Us, I guess.A few minutes passed.Adrian: Sky, I’ve been really busy lately. You know this.I read it twice. Of course he had been.Me: I know, I just feel like things have been different.Adrian: It’s nothing personal. Work has been a lot.I leaned back against my pillows. I wanted to ask him if he’d meant what he’d said the last time we were together. If he’d actually missed me, or if he missed having someone around when it was convenient.I wanted to ask why he could make time for me one weekend and barely managed a conversation the next. Instead, I typed one word.Me: Okay.Three dots appeared.Disappeared.Appeared again.Adrian: I don’t want you thinking I’m ignoring you.I stared at the screen, almost wanting to laugh.Me: I’m not.It wasn’t entirely true. But I wasn’t going to argue with someone who seemed determined not to have the conversation in the first place.
