Mariella’s POV

Mother Superior didn’t argue. For the first time since I had known her… she didn’t respond in her usual haughty manner.

She simply nodded, then she grabbed my arm.

“Come,” she said.

Another contraction ripped through me before I could stand. It felt like my guts were being twisted with a fork. I cried out and bent forward, desperately clutching my stomach.

Why now? Why now?

Outside, there was so much gunfire that I was starting to find it difficult to tell the gunshots apart fr

Mariella's POVHurrying out of the convent, I ran into the rain crying. The fact that I had parents I knew nothing about made me sick. I ran over to the roadside, where I could get a cab. I waited for a while, with the plastic bag under my clothes and my arms wrapped around my body for warmth. The road was rather lonely. But I didn't know if it was because this area was normally lonely or because it was getting really late. As I stood there, drenched in rain and shivering like a wet hamster, I heard someone call out to me. “Hey,” the voice called, though it sounded more like “ayy”. I didn't respond immediately. And then the voice came again. “Ayy shawty,” an old car pulled over to where I was. In the car were about three men, two Mexicans, one black. “Wanna get inside?” I didn't respond, partly because I didn't think they were worth responding to and partly because I was too cold to waste my breath. “Com’on now, gurl,” the driver said, a bald Mexican with tattoos all over. “You'

Mariella’s POV“And who are you?” A voice asked behind me. I turned around to see the silhouette of a woman with an umbrella standing a few feet behind me. A sudden flash of lightning briefly illuminated her face, enough for me to know who it was. “Mother Superior?” I asked. She looked a lot older than the last time I saw her. “Mariella?”“It's me,” I responded. “Goodness me. What a surprise,” she exclaimed. “Come on, let's go in.”-----We walked into her office, the door gently closing behind us. She quickly overtook me and headed to the kitchen. “Would you like something to drink?” She asked as she turned on the lights. “A hot cup of tea would be nice,” I responded, taking a seat on one of the two chairs in front of her desk. “Alright. Coming right up,” she said as she walked into the kitchen. Our relationship had really changed over the last few years. No one would even suspect we once had a not-so-friendly relationship at one time. A few minutes passed, and she emerged fro

Mariella’s POVI stood on the balcony, staring aimlessly into the golden red evening sky. I had gone through my fair share of ups and downs in the course of my life. And despite seeing a lot more bad days than good, I felt happy most of the time. Happy when I remembered my dad. We didn't spend much time together, but the little time we did spend together was the happiest day of my life. Even when I lost him and had to become a nun at the convent, I remember certain nights when I would just lock myself up and cry, wondering why God had to take him away. He meant the world to me and his memory was something I cherished greatly. As I grew up, I became so addicted to his memory that it became an obsession. I couldn't bare to accept the reality that he just…died. We had been taught at the church that God loves good people and wishes them long life and prosperity. So why the hell was a man as good as my dad was, not granted the long life God so promised? It didn't sit right with me, unt

Dante’s POVRumors of Luciano and Mariella being cousins were all over the place. And at first, I expected them to die down. But they didn't. Hell, they seemed to be getting even worse.I recalled my visit to the St. Jude's Convent five years ago, when I was digging into Mariella's past. That was when I found out about her gift and about the true story of her origins. The rumors of Luciano and Mariella being cousins were founded on two pillars. One of which was the revelation that the late (or not so late) Marcello was the half-brother of Antonio Santini. And the other was the now well-known fact that Mariella was Santini's daughter. Putting these two together, it didn't take a genius to see the connection. However, what no one seemed to know was that Mariella was not the biological child of Antonio Santini. Her actual parents died in an accident while she was an infant, and she was rescued by Antonio Santini, who happened to pass by when it happened.Till date, I didn't even know why

Mariella’s POVEver since breakfast yesterday, I hadn't really been myself. The fact that the Commission suspected that Luciano and I were cousins scared the shit out of me. I strolled around the house, wondering what would happen next. With the recent chain of events, I couldn't really tell what the future held. I couldn't even tell what today held. Walking around the house made me feel uncomfortable. Especially because I had gotten so accustomed to this way of life that I feared losing it. The thought of letting go of the peaceful and happy life I'd built here scared the shit out of me.While strolling, I walked into the west living room and right into a private meeting. Luciano stood near the window, speaking in a low voice with two of the Commission heads. He didn't turn when I entered, though he knew I was there. The conversation didn't stop. It continued as if I wasn't there, which was new. Normally, they would stop once I entered. Or at least, try to be more discreet in their

Mariella’s POVThe classy clinks of fancy cutlery filled the dining room as we had lunch. Luciano had invited some members of the Commission over. I couldn't exactly tell why, but everyone seemed to be acting rather strangely. I noticed some of the Commission members throwing furtive glances at me, which was weird since it wasn't their first time seeing me. I sat at the head of the table, munching on my food. Across from me, Luciano spoke with his usual calm authority, outlining logistics for the upcoming Commission meeting. I still felt uneasy. I could tell something was wrong, but I didn't know what. So I just assumed it was because of the recent series of events surrounding the rumor of Marcello being alive. As Luciano spoke, the room kept feeling more and more uneasy, like it had something to say but didn't know if it should. My eyes scanned everyone. On the surface, they seemed to be listening to what Luciano was saying but then again…their expressions. They looked worried. A
