MAELIS

An unease settled deep into my spine as I stared at Caden. Something felt off about his statement, and I furrowed my brows.

Could he be referring to another man?

Or Theron.

Determined to understand what he meant, I touched his shoulders gently, trying to coax him.

“What do you mean by you miss your father?” I asked softly, still crouched in front of him.

The little boy tilted his head, and was about to answer, when a sharp voice cut through the garden.

“Caden!”

Nerine strode toward us, her face tight with anger as she grabbed her son’s arm and pulled him behind her in one quick motion.

“What were you saying to my son?” she demanded, her voice raised in defense, but I also caught the anxiousness in it.

I rose slowly, brushing dirt off my dress. “Nothing important to get you worked up.”

My voice stayed calm on purpose because I didn’t want her to suspect a thing.

Gritting her teeth, her fingers tightened on Caden’s shoulder, and the boy winced, letting out a sudden cry.

“You’re hurting him,” I pointed out.

Nerine snapped her head toward me, then looked down at her own hand as if only now realizing the pressure.

Instead of apologising to her son, she raised her voice. “Stop it! Leave my son alone! You’re hurting him. Please, leave him!” The cry was loud enough to draw attention, and soon footsteps approached.

Theron appeared first, followed by two guards and a couple of maids who had been working nearby. His eyes went straight to the crying child, then to Nerine, then to me.

“What’s happening here?” He demanded, his voice cold and low.

“She was bullying him,” Nerine immediately replied, her voice shaking just enough to sound believable. “Just because I spent the night in your chambers. She took it out on our son.”

Caden wiped his face with the back of his hand and tried to speak. “Mama, she didn’t—”

“Hush.” Nerine pulled him closer and immediately turned on the tears.

Her voice broke amidst sobs as she continued. “Forgive me, Luna. I know you’re childless and haven’t been able to bear a son for the Alpha. Seeing my boy must have reminded you of that bitter truth.”

The words landed like a slap, and several of the people who had gathered shifted uncomfortably.

She just called me childless.

I felt the urge to touch my belly but I refrained. I turned my gaze to Theron, he was staring at me, not in pity but in anger.

He didn’t care that Nerine had called me childless. He was just angry that I had hurt his son.

He stepped forward, closed his hand around my wrist, and pulled me away from the scene without a word.

I did not resist, or pull my hands away, there was no point in creating a bigger scene in front of the child and his grip was too firm for me to pull free easily.

Theron did not stop until we reached the lonely path behind the rose hedges, which was out of immediate sight and hearing.

Theron growled, his gaze narrowing at me.

“Have you lost your mind?” His voice was filled with anger. “First the rites, now this. You go after a child because you cannot accept that Nerine is back in my life?”

Pulling my wrist free, I stepped back. “I didn’t touch him.”

“Do not lie to me, Maelis.” He took a step closer. “Since the day she returned you have done nothing but cause trouble. Not only that, you have challenged me in front of the elders, embarrassed this pack, and hurt the people I care about… but right now, I have run out of patience.”

The coldness in his tone was familiar, but the intensity of his anger underneath it was new.

I met his eyes without flinching. “If you want me gone so badly,” I said. “Then cancel the remaining rites and grant the unbinding. Just let me leave, that is all I ask for.”

“Leave?” Theron growled once again, and closed the distance between us. He swept his gaze closely at my face, and the air between us shifted.

I felt my wolf stir in response to his wolf. I could feel his restlessness and uneasiness…. and strangely, warmth?

Theron seemed to notice the same pull and quickly took two steps backward, putting clear distance between us.

He cleared his throat, not sparing a glance at me. “You will stay away from Nerine,” he said. “And you will stay away from my son. If I hear you have gone near either of them again, you will regret it.”

With that, he turned and walked away without waiting for an answer.

I stood alone on the path for a long moment, listening to the sound of his retreating footsteps. My wrist still carried the faint imprint of his grip, and his threat echoed louder than anything else he had said.

I pressed a hand to my stomach, feeling the life that he wasn’t aware of, and whispered. “You have no idea what you’re pulling away from, Theron.”

After a few seconds, I walked back toward the house and never came out for the rest of the day.

The next three days passed in peace, I stayed mostly in my room, leaving only when it was necessary.

Hura brought my meals and the herb tea Sera had ordered frequently, and  I spent time gathering old letters, notes on every public and private neglect from the past five years as evidence.

Also, the original contract pages I had taken from his study stayed hidden under the loose floorboard near my bed… no one could go there.

On the afternoon of the fourth day,  I left my room to search for one last piece of evidence which was the written record of a council meeting where Theron had openly refused to mark me, four years ago.

They were kept at the pack archives and luckily, no one goes there unless necessary.

Just before I could turn towards the hallway leading to the archives, I began to hear low whispers which stopped me in my tracks.

They belonged to Nerine and Evelyn.

I walked towards the direction of the voice and stopped at a distance. They were speaking in the small sitting room just ahead, and the door was left slightly open.

I pressed myself against the wall and listened.

“…She still thinks she has power,” Nerine was saying. “We need to move fast mother. I need her removed soon. I don’t want her and Theron under the same roof anymore.”

“Then we go for plan B,” Evelyn muttered.

  • 30 Days To Leave My Alpha   Something Doesn't Add Up

MAELISI woke up with the same retching sickness that had become part of my mornings. The moment I sat up, my stomach twisted hard as the nausea hit me and I had barely made it to the bathroom before everything came down. I gripped the edge of the sink, shivering, and waiting for the retching to stop. When it finally did, I rinsed my mouth with cold water and stared at my pale reflection.Sigh. When would these actually end? It had just begun, but I was so over it already. I reached for the small drug bottle Sera had given me from the drawer and popped one of the pills into my mouth. The bitter taste spread across my tongue as I swallowed it and a long sigh escaped my lips again.Today I planned on staying in my room and resting. I knew I had created a bit of chaos and the house might be spreading the gossip by now about how the rites ended abruptly.I had barely settled back under the sheets when the door opened to reveal Hura. She stepped in carrying a small jug and a cup in a tr

NERINEThe second the wooden doors of the hall closed behind me, the smile I had worn all evening fell off my face and I gritted my teeth in anger. I walked straight to my room without speaking to anyone. The limp I had put on for the elders disappeared the moment I turned to the corner leading to my room and I began to walk normally. By the time I got to my room, I shoved the door open, my hands already shaking as I kicked it shut hard enough that the sound echoed down the empty hallway.I stood in the middle of the room for a second, breathing hard as I tried to calm myself, but it wasn’t working. The next moment, I reached for the glass vase on the side table and threw it against the wall.Water, broken glass, and flowers exploded across the floor, but I wasn’t satisfied.I reached for another vase and crashed it to the floor. A third vase followed, and then the small porcelain pieces my mother had placed on the dresser turned to broken shards too.One after another, I swept ever

MAELIS “Is the luna really pregnant?” Hura’s question hung heavily in the silence between us. Her eyes remained fixed on my stomach, wide with disbelief, as if she could see through the thin gown.I opened my mouth, but the words were stuck. And for a second, I didn’t know how to get myself out of this situation. Should I lie to her the way I had lied to Theron?Twice, Theron had almost caught me, but my lie had shielded me. But this… it was different. She was basically seeing the screen.I stared at her face, it was filled with worry, and most especially, loyalty. This was the same face that had helped me off the floor without asking a single question, and had made my years spent in the pack house a bit more comfortable. I couldn’t bring myself to lie to her. I drew in a slow breath and nodded. “Yes,” I said. “I’m pregnant.”Hura’s knees hit the floor so fast that the sound made both me and Sera jump in fear. Tears immediately fell down her cheeks as she pressed both hands over

THERONThe first stage of the legitimacy rites was held in the old hall beneath the main pack house. The smoke from the burning incense filled the air slowly, as the Elders stood along both sides of the altar, discussing in twos. I glanced at my side, Caden was sitting on a high chair, his hands clasped tight in front of him, trying hard not to fidget. My little boy was anxious. I walked towards him, ruffled his curly hair, and he hugged me, his little hands clutching my belt. I glanced at the door for the fifth time since I walked in, Maelis should have been here by now. I was told a few minutes ago that Luna must be present during the first rites, and I told a maid to call her down, but she hadn’t come down. Was she sulking because I didn’t believe her pretense?Inhaling slowly, I mind-linked her, waiting patiently to connect. At first, I creased my brows, wondering why it was difficult to reach her. Then after a while, I felt her wolf, and passed my message to her, “Where a

MAELIS“Ahh.” Pain shot through my stomach the second my body hit the floor. The pain spread too quickly, sharp and unbearable, stealing the breath from my lungs. I tried to push myself up with my hands, but my arms gave out in weakness. My forehead pressed against the cold floor as I struggled to inhale air. I bit my lip hard, trying to keep myself from crying out in pain. The pain grew sharper around my lower abdomen, and Mia, my wolf whined in alert. The baby was in danger. I could feel it. Meanwhile, Nerine stood over me, and for a moment she just looked down without a word, smiling in victory. “You should watch where you step, sister,” she said sweetly before turning around. I remained on the floor, the pain persisting as my vision began to blur. Every breath sent a new wave of pain through me and I gripped the floor beneath me tightly for support. Suddenly, the sounds of footsteps approaching filled the hallway and she stopped in her tracks. The smile disappeared from her
