HIS TRUTH

HIS TRUTH

***********************

NARRATORS POV

***********************

It’s almost a month now since I woke up from my coma according to Justine I was unconscious for two weeks. The problem now is that I can’t remember a thing about my past, even my name.

Justine told me I said my name was Julia when I woke up briefly after two weeks with my memory intact after that day, I had complete memory loss.

I’ve tried to adjust to life in the woods, at first he wouldn’t let me do any work in the house and avoided me as much as he could.  After I complained about going crazy staying idle, he allowed me to do some choice, soft work as he called it. But he still avoided me.

With time I’ve grown to like him, he has the kindest eyes I’ve ever seen and when he thinks I'm not looking, he stares at me for so long, I should be creeped out but I love it nonetheless.

We live together but barely talk to each other. I also noticed that he disappears into the woods and comes back at dawn, sometimes I hear the howling of wolves, other times nothing. Justine had never given me a reason to fear him, lately, he tries hard to joggle my memory as if he couldn’t wait to get rid of me. The more he tried the less I remembered, with time he grew tired and let me be.

“Teach me how to build the fire, I need to make myself more useful around here.”

“Don’t worry about that, I will build the fire myself whenever we need to.”

“Stop treating me like a handicap,” I screamed, I was bored out of my senses, I couldn’t remember anything about myself and here I was with this man that wouldn’t say a word to me.

“Later.”

“Now, and stop treating me like am invisible.”

Justine observed Julia for a moment, he knew he had been ignoring her but it was for their good.

He went to the fireplace and though he didn't beckon to her, he knew when she was following him.

Somehow he could pick her scent, mild yet powerful and alluring.

“Place your sticks and twigs together, place dry grass and leaves on the kindling, then light your matches.” immediately the fire shot up.

Julia separated the wood and twigs immediately and tried to build a fire, it was as simple as she thought, determined to succeed, she made a fire on the fourth try. Her shout of triumph was infectious. In her happiness he hugged Justine, when they separated their eyes met, Justine pulled his eyes away immediately afraid of fanning what his heart was beginning to feel for Julia.

“I get my supplies from the market in town, we could go together next time. Who knows we might meet someone that recognizes you.”

“You are such a weakling and fool.” pushing him away she stomped out of the house.

When she didnt come back for hours Justine went in search of her, he had an idea of where she would likely be, and he wasn’t wrong.”

“Can I sit with you?”

“No, you may not.”

Justine sat anyway. He watched her bite her nails, she always did that when she was overwhelmed and he was sorry he was the reason for whatever she was feeling now.

“Do you not want to reconnect with your family, they would be worried about you. It’s almost five months since you left home.” Justine said, moments later. They had both been sitting still just watching the fishes swim in the creek.

“Where is home,” Julia said and threw a branch into the stream making the fishes flutter around.

“We have to at least try and locate your family.”

Julia stared at Justine, she didn’t remember anything about her past but she knew for sure that she loved this man sitting before her, she couldn’t remember if she had loved anyone before but whenever she looked at Justine he literally took her breath away.

“Are you not my family, you saved me from the jaws of death.” her voice was so low, he had to strain his ears to hear her.

“Julia.” his voice was so husky it made her draw her breath. “You can’t stay here with me.”

“Why?” her eyes clouded.

“There are things you don’t know about me.”

“Then  tell me.”

“It would freak you out, im sorry you won’t be able to handle it.”

“Here we go again, allow me to be the judge of that, stop making decisions for me.” her eyes narrowed, an exasperated sigh escaped her lips

“Im not who you think I am.”

“What I know is enough for me.”

“What do you know.” Justine wondered if she knew already

“That you are the kindest man ever.” she smiled shyly at him, but Justine only frowned.

“You are so naive.” he broke a blade of grass absent-minded. It would not be easy explaining this to Julia, it would have been better if she just left.

“Have you recollected any old memory this past few days?’ Justine asked.

Shaking her head she started walking away without replying to him.

“Where are you going to.” he hurried after her.

“Far away from you.”

“Watch out.” but it was too late, she fell with a loud thud and broke her leg.

“You must learn to stop acting in anger.” Justine tried to lift her.

“Let go of me.” she swung his hands away. Julia could have swi=one that someone had said this to her before if only she remembered something, anything. Justine was never going to want to be with her, it was a sad reality she had to accept/

“Ouch.” she fell back in pain.

Ignoring her tantrums, Justine lifted her, her smell filled his senses, their eyes met and locked.  Mesmerized by her eyes, her sensuous lips parted as though she had something to say. He tried his best to look away, he had to take her to the cabin quickly, he shouldn’t be what he was about to do. But his head had lost control of his heart, he bent over and kissed her. She didnt resist him but welcomed the kiss, he loved how she tasted like wild blueberry, her breath felt warm on his face. The kiss was brief but the impression on their heart was forever.

“Im sorry.” he started walking towards the cabin. “Please forgive me I didnt know what came over me.”

“I love you Justine.” she wished he would look at her.

“You don’t know what you are talking about,”

This made Julia angry and sad at the same time, unable to control her emotions she wept. Thankfully they had reached their cabin and with care, he placed her on the bed and went to build a fire. She was so furious at him for ignoring her even though she had cried. She buried her head in the pillow and wept.

“I was once married.” Julia stood up immediately, surprised to hear him speak. “She fell ill and died suddenly. It was so fast we didnt say goodbye. One minute we were laughing the next she was fighting for her life.

“Im sorry.” was all Julia could mutter.

“There is something else.” he hesitated. “I am a werewolf.” he waited for her to scream but when she didnt say anything, Justine probed her.

“You are not saying anything.”

“I know already.’ she blinked back her tears

“How and when” Justine stood rigidly unable to move, he didn't know if he should happy or worried

“I just knew, I noticed you usually left the house at midnight, and also the howling followed as soon as you left.”

“Are you not worried about it? I mean my being a wolf and all that.”

“At first I was afraid.” she replied truthfully “but now, I think it's cool.” she smiled sheepishly

“Oh,'' Justine muttered, he never thought he would admire any woman or find a mate ever again, but here he was gushing over this human sitting on his bed with his fur blanket wrapped around her.
