2: HEARTBREAK

Cane had been poked in the heart by Clare’s words, there was some to truth to it and he did not know how to face it. With his anger he said what he shouldn’t have to and made Clare feel satisfied with whatever decision she was about to make. She kept quiet and stared at Cane whose eyes ha turn red. His fury was being unleashed, slowly. Cane realized what he had said and could not believe it either.

“I…I am sorry, I did not mean that Clare!”

“Clearly you do not know me. We are done so get out of my house and don’t think about ever coming back!”

“We…”

“Shouldn’t you be with the planned girlfriend?”

The situation was already uncontrollable and out of hand, Cane realized this and walked out of the house without saying a word. He had realized that at this moment they would only be telling each other hurtful things some of which they did nor even mean, like what he had said to her. He knew Clare  as the most loving and less flawed person who existed in her world. To make her react like this she must have hurt her badly. The he got confidence in himself.

Now, he was sure she loved him, otherwise she could not have been jealous. This gave him some sense of assurance that he could come back later and try to make the woman of his dreams understand why he had chosen to help his family. He was not just going to give up on her- not willing to lose his jewel! She loved him and that is all that mattered to him. He knew that that love would prevent her from wanting any other person.

Bang!

He closed the door and walked away, the conversation had not gone as he had planned. From a distance, before he got into his car he heard a glass shattering. He left!

Clare was left in despair. As Cane walked out her tears flowed uncontrollably. Her heart was pounding in her chest. The pain could not stop even with all the crying and yelling but it reduced with time. She poured herself a glass of wine and drank to her fill. She could not find her phone anywhere. At her drunk and despair state she assumed it was just somewhere around the house. She went to the telephone at the counter and dialed the only person that was in her mind at that time. Grace!

“Hi, can you come over at my place?”

“Are you okay?”

“Can you? Please!”

“I’ll be there in a minute! Are you okay? Should I call Cane? Do you need anything?”

“I only need you right now Grace.”

“On my way.”

Once she opened her mouth and didn’t mention anything that had happened she felt some peace within her. She could contain herself until her best friend came over. Laying on the couch, she stared at the television blankly. Suppressing all the thoughts that popped up in her mind.

Grace did not take long to come to her friend’s rescue. They had known each other for  months now and were really committed to making their friendship work. Clare had calmed down and was no longer in the moods to talk about had happened. They poured wine and drank as they talked about good past experiences that made them laugh until they laid on the couch. And Grace saw this as a good opportunity to ask about what bothered her friend.

“Why did you call me here Clare?”

“I…I ended things with Cane”

“what? Why?”

“His family wants him to date someone else for a short while…just for show.”

“Wait, what?”

“I know how crazy it sounds… I was so shocked as well…he’s willing to  do it and it’s killing me. I don’t know why I feel hurt even if it is what is best for me. I hate him but I still cannot just hate him completely.”

Grace had not yet finished to take in what Clare was saying. She was quiet for a while trying to find the right words that would express what she thought without being rude or unjust. It mattered to her what her friend thought about her.

“Are just going to be quiet Grace?”

“I don’t know what to say… I’ve never heard of such a situation… and I was kind of sure that Cane loves you as much as you love him. What did he really want?”

“He doesn’t love me… he wants me to understand him and agree to play along but that would only make me his mistress”

Clare’s face became sunken and tears bubbled up at the edges of her eyes. She looked like she had no more tears in her even though she wanted so badly to cry.

“I am not crying because he has chosen another woman over me Grace, I am crying because he will come back and I will dumbly accept him back.”

The two friends embraced each other and decided to switch their conversation to something else less painful.  They talked and laughed the whole night. At some point they blasted the speakers with their favorite songs. They woke up early in the morning and acted as if their was nothing wrong.

She had cried on Grace’s shoulder so now, she was going to be the strong lady she had always been. One day she was sure the right     guy for her would find and cherish her.
