Chapter Sixteen

Addie’s POV

The sour smell reached me before he even spoke.

It was bourbon and sweat, the exact odor that used to drift into our apartment late at night, carrying the reality of bad decisions and another woman’s sheets.

Preston stood in the opening of the booth, his chest rising and falling beneath his light jacket as his hands balled into fists. He looked at me on the sofa as if I were responsible for everything falling apart around him.

He barely glanced toward the small side

Chapter Thirty-Four Sebastian’s POVThe only sound in the bedroom was the scratch of the stylus tip dragging across the glass tablet screen and the faint, rhythmic beeping of the portable vitals monitor Dr. Jamie had left on the nightstand.I had pushed my reading glasses up the bridge of my nose, sitting back in the wingback armchair Jamie had dragged over from the window so I wouldn’t leave Addison’s side. The cottage smelled like antiseptic, sterile saline, and the wet cedar from the storm rolling off the lake.My right hand was wrapped tight in fresh white gauze where the crystal tumbler had split open my palm. It throbbed with every beat of my heart, an angry ache, but it was nothing compared to the fury sitting like an anvil in the middle of my chest. On the bed, Addison lay beneath two thick down comforters, her dark hair splayed across the white pillows, damp and tangled. Her face was still chalky pale, but her lips had lost that terrifying blue hue after Jamie flushed out t

Chapter Thirty-ThreeSebastian’s POVMy chest caved in the second Darcia lunged. One breath I was half-listening to some tax attorney drone on about offshore loopholes by the patio heaters, keeping an eye on the pool deck. The next, Darcia stepped right into Addison's face, threw both hands forward, and shoved her straight off the ledge.Maybe the crowd near the bar was too drunk to catch the push.I wasn't.I saw the whole fucking thing. The sickening smack of Addison hitting the water echoed across the terrace, followed by a violent eruption of spray."Help!" Darcia’s shriek ripped through the courtyard, shrill, fake, and theatrical as hell. She dropped to her knees at the edge of the pavers, clutching her face, sobbing into her hands like a manic actress on a daytime soap. "Somebody help her! Addison tripped! She slipped on the wet flags and fell in! God, she’s at the bottom!"People started gasping. Wine glasses clinked down in a hurry, heels clattered on the terrace, and everyone

Chapter Thirty-TwoAddie’s POV"I am not attending, Preston."I dropped onto the mattress, keeping my face turned away to shut out his pacing.Every muscle complained from six hours spent measuring partitions on forty-eight, debating line items with electrical contractors, and watching Mara mark revisions across vendor agreements. Dressing up to sit through cold courses while Darcia offered quiet critiques of my personal choices held zero appeal."Addie, listen," Preston said, walking back and forth between the wardrobe and the edge of the bed. "This is an intimate gathering at the residence. Darcia put real effort into organizing the evening.""Darcia organizes events to secure leverage," I answered into the pillow. "Inform her the incision opened and I am unavailable.""Do not joke about that." He caught my ankle over the blanket, giving it an impatient pull. "The senior partners from Henderson will attend. Miller from the regulatory board will be present. Darcia gathered the entire

Chapter Thirty-One Sebastian’s POV“I took the liberty of ordering us the porterhouse, Sebastian. Medium-rare. They age it in-house for forty days, best cut in the Loop.”Preston was smiling so hard his cheeks looked like they were going to cramp. He sat across from me in the corner booth at Gibsons, his elbows planted on the crisp white linen, hands clasped together like he was praying to a statue. His dark navy suit was freshly dry-cleaned, but he couldn’t hide the sweat soaking through his collar. He had that shiny, frantic look guys get when they’re trying to pitch an investment they know is complete garbage.I leaned back against the red leather, my tumbler of sparkling water untouched on the table.“You called an urgent family lunch on a Tuesday, Preston,” I said, keeping my voice dead even. “I gave you thirty minutes between my board briefing and a call with Frankfurt. Skip the beef commentary and tell me why I’m sitting here.”Preston flinched, his smile slipping for a fract

Chapter Thirty Addie’s POVMara was leaning against the hallway table when the elevator opened, looking like she had walked straight off a transport plane. She wore worn combat boots, dark cargo pants, and a faded green bomber jacket that had seen years of field service. Her hair was trimmed close on the sides and messy on top, and an olive canvas duffel hung from her shoulder. The moment she saw me, her mouth curved into that familiar, lopsided grin.“Look at you,” Mara said, dropping the duffel onto the floor with a dull clatter of metal gear. “Who put the choir girl in a tailored suit?”“Be quiet,” I laughed, the sound catching in my chest.I moved past my tailored blazer and the pull along my healing side, throwing my arms around her neck.Mara caught me against her, wrapping two tattooed arms around my back and lifting me off the rug. She held me there for several seconds, solid as a brick column, squeezing until my breath hitched.“Careful,” I winced against her collar. “Surgi

Chapter Twenty-Nine Addie’s POV“You don’t have to answer this.”Sebastian’s thumb lingered right at the corner of my jaw, warm against the chill of the office air. He didn’t drop his hand right away; he just eased back an inch, giving me room to pull away if I wanted to.I didn’t pull away.I leaned my hip back against the edge of his desk, crossing my arms over the front of my charcoal blazer. “You’re holding a smoking-gun fraud file that could put my husband in federal prison, Sebastian. I think you’ve earned the right to ask whatever you want.”A faint, crooked grin pulled at his mouth, though his eyes stayed steady, dark and searching. He turned toward the massive glass wall behind him, tucking one hand into the pocket of his trousers while his other hand swirled the cooled dregs of his espresso.“I’m curious,” he said, staring out over the gray line of Lake Michigan. “About you. About how a marriage gets hollowed out from the inside without either person pulling the trigger.”
