Chapter 1

I kept scrolling through the comments like I was trying to hurt myself.

Beyond my best friend, plenty of our other mutual friends had left their congratulations.

[Alice's a great girl. If you ever treat her wrong, man, I'll be the first one to come after you myself!]

That one was from Chase's closest friend. Just last week, he'd greeted me warmly, calling me "Mrs. Peterson" like it was second nature.

[So happy for you, man, marrying the girl you love most! We're not going home sober tonight!]

That one was my old roommate from college.

[Let's keep the celebration among us. For my brother and Alice's happiness, everybody keep this quiet. Don't let a certain someone find out.]

That one was Chase's older sister, Susanne Peterson. Years ago, when she'd needed money for a business venture, she'd borrowed eleven thousand dollars from me and told me I was the only future sister-in-law she'd ever wanted.

[Don't worry, our lips are sealed! For the prince and princess's happiness, we'd never let the witch find out!]

That one was the company's newly hired assistant, a sweet but scatterbrained girl who'd nearly gotten fired more than once. I was the one who'd put in a good word for her and coached her through the basics until she made it past her probation period.

I lifted my chin, stubborn, and forced the tears back down.

Everyone had known that Chase had been with another girl for eight years. And every single one of them had agreed, without a word passing between them, to keep it from me.

I was the "certain someone" in their private group chats. The witch who'd ruin the prince and princess's happy ending. A joke.

My phone refreshed, and Chase's post vanished from his profile.

A second later, it rang. Chase—missing for an entire day—was calling.

"Sorry, baby. There was a huge bug in the company's system today. I've been slammed until just now. Haven't even looked at my phone.

"Things are crazy at work lately. Let's hold off on the marriage license for now.

"Oh, and baby—did you see anything interesting on social media today?"

His voice was tight, fishing for something so clumsily it was almost funny.

I forced myself to answer evenly.

"I tried calling you all day, and it wouldn't go through. I've been at the hospital with my mom. When would I have had time to scroll through anything?

"Go ahead and handle your work. About the marriage license... we'll talk about it whenever you're free."

Last year, my mother had been diagnosed with stage-4 stomach cancer.

The doctors said that, in the best case, she had three more years.

Her only wish was to see me married to Chase before I turned thirty.

Today was June nineteenth. It was also my thirtieth birthday.

Right now, my mother was lying in her hospital bed, hoping to see her daughter and son-in-law's brand-new marriage certificate.

I'd never be able to give her that wish now. Because Chase already belonged to someone else.

I sank down against the wall, curling into myself as small as I could.

My tears splattered against the phone screen, blurring the bold black text into a smear of light.

I wiped the screen dry and quietly noted down where they were celebrating.

The Golden Petal. Private room 302.

Alice had.Gina really had died—hounded to death by Alice and Olivia, working together. And they'd stolen her body afterward, then turned around and pinned the whole thing on Nora, playing thief and victim at once. When he'd turned against her, believing every lie. How utterly alone she must have felt.He was a bastard. He owed her more than he could ever repay. The police led Alice and Olivia away.As she passed me, Olivia—always so obsessed with her looks—was crying so hard her makeup had run down her face."Nora, I'm sorry. You really did care about me as a friend, but I let my vanity turn me against you behind your back. I helped an outsider hurt you, and I got Gina killed. Gina had always looked out for me. I'm so sorry..."I watched them get led away

It was a video of Alice hanging out and chatting with a group of girlfriends. She was curled up on the couch with a Budweiser, rolling her eyes nonstop. "That idiot Olivia actually asked me for a birthday present. Like she's somebody."I only bother hanging around her to pump her for Nora's secrets. Plus, with a face and body like hers, she makes me look even better by comparison. Someone like her, my friend? Please."And Chase's best bro is broke and pathetic—born to be somebody's errand boy his whole life."And don't even get me started on his sister. Almost thirty-five and still not married, mooching off her brother like some kind of leech. Chase's money is my money—why should she get to spend a cent of it? The second we're married, I'm kicking her out."...Alice went through every single person one by one, tearing them apart. The video ended with a shrill, twisted shriek from Alice herself.Everyone who'd just been defending her a moment ago now looked like their faces had

After that day, Chase never came to see me again.Even the medical fund transfers he sent me got intercepted by Alice.Without money, I got moved from a VIP room to a standard room, then from a standard room to a shared ward. The conditions were poor, the medication was basic at best, and my body struggled to heal.A month later, the last of my savings ran out, and I had no choice but to check myself out.Running my fingers over the long, ugly dark-red scar snaking across my chest, a rage so vast it threatened to drown me welled up inside. The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was go straight to the police station to file a report."I want to report a crime. Someone stole my mother's body."The police moved fast. In under a day, they'd traced the body's whereabouts through hospital security footage. The truth had been sitting there the whole time, one phone call away, and Chase had believed Alice based on nothing but a few whispered lies. It would almost have been fu

After apologizing to the hospital director, Chase hung up the phone, his expression darkening. He pulled the still-sniffling Alice tight against him and looked at me with pure disappointment."Nora, I don't even recognize you anymore."How did you turn this vicious? Putting your own mother up to faking her death just to frame Alice—how could you even think of something so twisted?"Playing games with death like that—aren't you afraid it'll come back on you? That you'll actually curse your own mother into an early grave?"Alice cut a glance at me from the corner of her eye, the ghost of a triumphant smile tugging at her lips.My best friend, Olivia, stood with her arms crossed, looking thoroughly pleased with herself. In that moment, none of it mattered anymore—not proving myself right against Alice, not getting Chase to believe me. All I wanted to know was where my mother's body had gone.My mother's attending physician, Dr. Musk, was a man of real integrity, the kind who genui

A knock sounded at the door. Chase got up to answer it, and Alice's tearful face appeared without warning on the other side. Her eyes were red-rimmed, glistening with tears, like a wounded little rabbit.Chase's heart melted on the spot, his voice softening before he even realized it. "Alice, what are you doing here?"Alice threw herself straight into his arms. "If I hadn't come, who knows what kind of lies Nora would've spread about me by now!"Is she really telling people I killed her mother? I didn't! I swear I didn't!"I heard Nora's mother wasn't doing well, so I asked Ollie to take me to visit her."The second we got to the door, I overheard Nora talking to her mother. They were planning for Nora's mom to fake her own death and pin it on me, so you'd hate me for good and the two of them could keep control of your money..."Chase, you've been so good to them, and this is how they repay you. It made me so angry on your behalf. I stormed into the room to confront her, and the

When I woke, the pain in my chest was so sharp it felt like the wound might tear open again if I so much as moved.I forced myself to sit up. Chase, keeping watch at my bedside, rushed to steady me. "Nora, just tell me what you need, and I'll take care of it. The wound hasn't scarred over yet—moving around will only hurt you."He adjusted the hospital bed to a more comfortable angle, settling me in, then made a call to the office. "Nora's hurt. I don't trust a hired nurse to look after her properly. I need to be here myself. Leo, I'm not coming in for the next few days. Sorry to ask, but I need you and the other managers to hold things down."I had no interest in whatever Chase was saying. All I wanted to know was how my mother was doing. Had they managed to save her?I gritted through the pain in my chest and tried to force myself upright. That was when the door burst open, and Dr. Larry Musk, my mother's attending physician, stormed in, his face dark with anger."How many time
