Chapter 2

Author: Three Potatoes
Cameron still hadn't come home by the next day.

The only thing on my phone was a message and a photo Paige had sent in the early hours of the morning.

"Iris, everyone was having so much fun last night that we drank too much and crashed at my place. Cameron won't be coming home tonight, so don't worry."

In the photo, Cameron lay shirtless, passed out on Paige's bed, with the lingerie she'd changed out of right beside him.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

I typed out question after question, then deleted every one. In the end, they all stuck in my throat.

I locked my phone and headed out to pick up my parents from the airport. They were flying in for the wedding.

I was standing at the curb waiting for my ride when Cameron's Maybach rolled to a stop in front of me.

He lowered the window and waved me over. "Iris, I'll take you."

I froze for a moment.

But one look at the gridlocked traffic, and I got in anyway.

The second I sat down, a heavy, perfumed scent hit me.

It was Paige's favorite fragrance.

There was a pink cartoon pillow on the passenger seat that hadn't been there before.

But Cameron didn't like cartoons, and he hated pink.

He glanced at the pillow in my hands.

He sounded exasperated as he explained, but there was a hint of pleasure in his voice.

"Paige insisted on stuffing it in here. She really treats me like her personal chauffeur."

I didn't answer. I turned my head away and closed my eyes.

All I could think about was when we'd first gotten together.

I'd spent three days and three nights praying on my knees in a little chapel, then given him a St. Christopher medal to keep him safe on the road. Cameron tossed it aside without even looking at it.

"I don't like keeping junk like that in my car."

So it turned out he never needed a reason to brush me off, but he could always find an excuse to make room for Paige.

"We're here."

The car came to a stop.

I opened my eyes and froze, frantic and furious.

"Cameron, weren't we going to the airport to pick up my parents? Where are we?"

Cameron unbuckled his seat belt without any rush, as if the answer were obvious.

"If we're putting on a show, we have to go all in. Paige's parents are in town today, so we're all having lunch together."

"And what about my parents?"

A flicker of impatience crossed his face. "They're grown adults. They're not going to get lost.

"I'll send someone to take them to the hotel. Stop worrying."

"Then you can put on this show yourselves. I'm done playing along!"

Fighting back the anger surging in my chest, I turned to push the door open.

Cameron grabbed my arm.

He frowned at me like I was being completely unreasonable.

"Stop it. Mr. and Mrs. Sutton know how close you and Paige are. It won't make sense if you're not there."

In the middle of our standoff, my phone buzzed.

It was my parents calling.

I hurried to answer.

But Cameron suddenly leaned over and snatched the phone out of my hand.

"There's no time. After lunch, I'll go see them with you.

"Don't forget, we lost the game. Don't make a scene."

The game. Always the game.

I suddenly felt drained, and a sting I couldn't put into words burned behind my eyes.

I could force myself to play along with his games for the sake of his so-called competitive spirit.

But ever since Paige came along, every time he said "a bet's a bet," I felt more and more like a joke.

I looked at Cameron, disappointed.

Suddenly, I wanted to ask him why.

But when the words reached my lips, it no longer seemed worth it.

I managed a thin smile.

"Fine. I'll go in with you."

Cameron let out a breath and reached for me, satisfied.

I quietly moved out of his reach, my voice perfectly calm.

"Can I have my phone back now?"

Cameron caught the distance in my voice, and his jaw tightened.

I ignored him, took my phone, and sent a message straight to his archrival.

"That proposal I turned down last time... can I take back my answer?"

Paige had been my best friend in high school. After graduation, her college applications fell through and she stayed local for school, while I moved to San Francisco.Even though we lived far apart, we always kept in touch. Then, a year ago, she lost her boyfriend and her job, and I invited her to San Francisco for a fresh start.I ran myself ragged helping her find an apartment and a job.Worried she wouldn't have any friends, I brought her into my circle myself.I even asked Cameron and the others to look out for her.But somehow, their looking out for her slowly turned into something else.In the end, I was the one who became the outsider.Pulling myself back to the present, I called Paige. She seemed to have been expecting it. After a few seconds of silence, she suddenly burst out laughing."You're calling to ask me why, aren't you?""Iris, I'm so jealous of you. Why are you prettier and better at everything? Why does everyone like you so much?!"Why did my college pla

Cameron's shoulders slowly sagged like a prisoner who'd just been handed a death sentence.Deathly pale and unsteady on his feet, he couldn't get another word out.The doors swung shut again, instantly cutting off the commotion outside.* * *Outside the hotel, the relatives and friends who'd watched Cameron get thrown out exchanged looks. The crowd's scrutinizing stares and whispers wrapped around him like thorny vines until he could barely breathe. And just then, the reporters who'd been staking out the hotel surged toward him like a tide."Mr. Weller, why were you thrown out of your own wedding?""Mr. Fenwick landed the Northstar project, and now he's taken your fiancée too. How do you feel right now?"In the past, Cameron's competitive streak would never have let him come out on the losing end.But now, he said nothing. He just stared blankly at the closed doors, lost.Cameron's parents' faces were thunderous. But when they saw Paige rushing over in her wedding gown, Di

On the stage in the hotel ballroom, the officiant moved through the ceremony step by step. The couple's entrance, the vows, and then, just as we reached the exchange of rings, the heavy doors burst open with a bang. When Cameron stormed in, I wasn't surprised. He stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his chest still heaving. He was wearing the suit that had been custom-made alongside my satin gown. When we'd gone to the fittings together, I'd pictured the two of us in our wedding clothes at our ceremony.I'd just never imagined it would be like this."Iris! Don't marry him..."Cameron's voice was hoarse and shaking."I'm here now, aren't I? No matter how upset you are, you can't treat marriage like a joke..."I raised my voice and cut him off. "The ones treating marriage like a joke, from start to finish, were all of you."Lucas and I are legally married. We already have the license."I gently slid the ring onto Lucas's finger. He folded my hand into his palm, his thu

Before Cameron could react, photo after photo popped up.In them, Iris wore a satin wedding gown. She was breathtaking. And beside her, in the place that should've been his, stood his archrival, Lucas.Cameron's grip on his phone tightened bit by bit."Isn't that Lucas?" Paige's face showed just the right amount of surprise."How could Iris marry Lucas? When did they even get together?"Everyone knows you two can't stand each other. She couldn't have done this on purpose, could she...?"No wonder she overreacted like that. What if she was just using this as an excuse so she could turn around and marry Lucas..."Every word out of Paige's mouth grated on his nerves.Blind fury stripped Cameron of every last shred of reason. He jumped into the car and floored it.The car tore down the road, leaving a chorus of honking and cursing behind it.But just as he got close to the hotel, the traffic, which had been moving fine, suddenly ground to a halt.Cars even kept cutting in fron

In the photo, clearly taken by a paparazzo, Lucas was carefully shielding Iris as he walked her into the hotel where they'd be holding their wedding reception that night.Cameron's mind went blank for a moment. His first thought was that Iris had invited Lucas to their wedding. But Iris knew better than anyone that he and Lucas had never gotten along. The three of them had gone to college together.Back then, he and Lucas had chased each other for first place in competition after competition. After graduation, they'd both gone into the tech industry as founders, fighting over the same resources and projects.Over the years, Cameron had resented it from time to time, because Lucas's company was always one step ahead of his.But when it came to love, Lucas had lost to him. They'd confessed their feelings to Iris at almost the same time, and Iris had chosen him! That thought settled Cameron's nerves a little. He reached out to Iris, almost impatiently. But his messages were re

Once my parents were settled, I went back to the house Cameron and I had bought for after the wedding to pack my things.I hadn't expected it to be so busy.Cameron was standing in the living room on the phone, directing the housekeeper as she carried Paige's luggage inside. He rattled off Paige's measurements from memory."Prepare another set of wedding dresses in these sizes. We'll come in tomorrow to pick one."After patiently walking the sales associate through the styles Paige wanted, Cameron finally noticed me.He hung up. "Iris, perfect timing."Paige's parents are coming to stay for a few days. Pack up your stuff so they don't see it."You can stay at a hotel for now. You'll be getting ready there on the wedding day anyway."The moment the words left his mouth, Cameron paused, as if he'd finally remembered.Last week, I'd asked if my parents could stay with us for a few days, and he'd shot me down with a scowl."I don't like strangers staying in my house.
