Chapter 4

Author: Seven S
"I just wanted to give them my blessing. I never expected something like this to happen..." His voice was soft and hurt, as if everyone had ganged up on him.

Melissa immediately frowned. "Chester, don't say that." Then, she looked at the phone, her voice turning colder. "Mr. Stewart, Mrs. Stewart, I know you are worried.

"However, Chester is only trying to help.

"He went out of his way to get that lucky bracelet for us.

"Now that it has fallen apart, I cannot just leave him to deal with it by himself."

My dad was so angry that his voice changed.

"What about Zane?

"Is he supposed to keep waiting for you?"

Melissa was silent for a moment before making a promise.

"I will take Zane to get the marriage license. If we don't make it this time, we will do it next time.

"Don't worry. I will definitely marry him."

Next time.

After seven years, I had lost count of how many times I had heard those words.

I took a deep breath and reached for the phone.

"Mom, Dad, don't worry.

"I'm getting my marriage license today."

Then, I hung up.

Melissa stared at me, her eyebrows knit tightly together.

"Zane, do you really have to pressure me like this?"

I looked up at her, a terrifying calm settling over me.

So she knew.

She knew that if we kept wasting time, we would not get the marriage license today. She knew my parents were waiting, our friends were waiting, and she knew exactly how humiliating it was for me to be left behind again and again.

Despite this, even knowing all that, she still chose to make me wait.

I looked at her.

"Pressure you?

"You think getting a marriage license with me is pressuring you?"

Melissa's expression darkened.

"Zane, stop making a fuss!"

I did not answer.

I lowered my eyes to my phone.

Another message had appeared in the chat with that number.

[Almost there.]

At 4:56 pm, the security guard poked his head out from the doorway again.

"Are you two getting this done or not?

"You have four minutes left.

"If you don't come inside now, you really won't be able to do it today."

Ryan was so anxious that tears had started filling his eyes.

"Melissa, did you hear him? We only have four minutes!"

Our friends started speaking up too.

"Melissa, just go inside.

"Don't let Zane wait all this time only to be left hanging again."

Melissa looked at Chester. He clutched the lucky bracelet in his hands, his eyes red from crying.

"Melissa, why don’t you go inside with him?

"I will be fine.

"I'm just an outsider anyway.

"My blessing isn't that important."

After saying that, he lowered his head and started searching for the tiny charms again. His shoulders trembled slightly.

Melissa's expression changed. She hurried over to comfort him.

"Don't say that.

"You aren't an outsider."

The moment those words left her mouth, the entire area fell silent. Everyone looked at me with sympathy. However, I felt completely calm.

I calmly took my identification documents out of my bag, then turned and walked toward the entrance of the County Clerk's Office.

Behind me, Melissa suddenly stood up.

"Zane, what are you doing?"

I looked at the clock above the County Clerk's Office entrance.

"I told you.

"I'm getting my marriage license this time.

"So, I'm going inside to submit the paperwork."

Melissa's face instantly hardened. She hurried after me and grabbed my wrist.

"Zane, stop making a fuss.

"If I don't go inside with you, who are you going to marry?"

I glanced down at her hand. Then, I slowly pulled my wrist free.

"Then I won't marry you."

The moment I said those words, the steps fell frighteningly silent.

Our friends looked at one another. Someone whispered, "Zane must be really angry.

"He is probably just trying to force Melissa to go inside.

"You can’t blame him, either."

"Wherever he is, that is where my home will be."Tears slipped down my cheeks. The officiant turned to me."Do you take Ms. Julia Lawson to be your wife?"I looked at her, and suddenly, so many memories came rushing back.I remembered the final minute at the County Clerk's Office, when she held out her hand to me. I remembered the slippers she had left in the car, the warm water she brought me that night when I had a fever, and the umbrella she always tilted toward me whenever we walked through the rain. All those little things came rushing back at once.Every time she asked me, "Is this okay?"I finally smiled."I do."Applause filled the beach, and even the sound of the waves seemed gentle. As we exchanged rings, I spotted someone standing at the very back of the crowd.Melissa.She wore a black dress, her face pale. She did not come closer or make a scene. She simply stood there and watched from a distance. The moment I slipped the ring onto Julia's finger, Melissa low

The third picture was from the day she agreed to marry me. I had been so happy that my eyes were red. Those photos were like an old knife. They were not as sharp anymore, but they could still remind me of the pain.Melissa's voice broke."Zane, I really was happy back then. I just didn't realize it."I always thought you'd never leave."I always thought I could make it up to you somehow. I was so terribly wrong."I looked at the photo album. After a long silence, I finally said, "Melissa, you were happy."I was not."She froze.I continued."You thought I'd wait, but every time I waited for you, I was becoming a little more disappointed."Seven years didn't end all at once. They ended a little more every single day."Tears slipped down her cheeks."Did you ever have a hard time letting me go?"I did not lie to her."I did."Before the day we got the marriage license, I could never let you go."A small light appeared in her eyes. However, my next words extinguished it.

She was not very good at saying sweet things. However, she handled every little detail with care. When I worked late, she would bring me a late-night snack and wait downstairs at the office.Once, I casually mentioned that I was craving roasted pecans. She drove halfway across the city to get them for me.When my stomach started acting up, she would make plain oatmeal ahead of time. My medicine and a glass of warm water were always waiting beside it.She never asked when I would fall in love with her.She never pressured me for an answer. Instead, she simply stayed by my side, quietly helping me piece my broken sense of security back together.Meanwhile, Melissa continued finding ways to appear in my life.Once, when Julia and I went to take our wedding photos, Melissa was waiting outside the studio. She was holding a bouquet of gardenias. When she saw me walk out in a white suit, she froze. It was simple and perfectly fitted, the clean white fabric standing out against everyt

I was silent for two seconds before saying, "However, I'm not coming back."The light in her eyes slowly faded."Do you really love her that much?"I turned to look at Julia, but she didn't answer for me. Instead, she quietly tilted the umbrella farther over my head, letting half of her own shoulder get soaked by the rain.Something inside me softened at the sight."I'm learning to love her."And I'm sure I don't love you anymore."Melissa looked as if all the strength had been drained from her. The ring box slipped from her hand and rolled into the rainwater. She bent down to pick it up. Her fingers were shaking so badly that she dropped it several times before she finally managed to grab it.In the past, seeing her like that would have broken my heart. Now I only felt that everyone had to pay the price for their own choices.I walked around her and got into the car with Julia.Just before the door closed, Melissa suddenly called my name."Zane!"I turned around. She s

"Zane, please give me one more chance."I looked at her.
