Chapter 8: What She Wants.

The grip on Mirabel's shoulder vanished as Dante yanked Isabella backward, spinning her away like a ragdoll. Isabella stumbled, catching herself against the doorframe, her carefully constructed mask cracking for just a moment.

"Are you hurt?" Dante's hands found Mirabel's arms, his eyes roaming her face with an intensity that made her breath catch. His thumb brushed the corner of her lip where Isabella's slap had split the skin. "She hit you."

"It's nothing," Mirabel

[Mirabel] The car was silent for the first few minutes. Mirabel stared out the window, watching her family's estate shrink in the side mirror until it vanished. "You're shaking," Dante observed. Mirabel looked down at her hands. He was right. They were trembling, now that the adrenaline was finally starting to fade. "I just threatened my family," she said, almost to herself. "I stood in front of them and told them I would destroy them." "You didn't threaten them," Dante said. "You gave them a way out. There's a difference. I would never have shown them that kind of mercy." She turned to look at him, really look at him. The sharp line of his jaw. The intensity in his dark eyes. The careful way he held himself, like he was always ready for a fight. Maybe he was. "Um, if it's not too much trouble," she muttered, fiddling with her fingers and biting her lip, "I forgot a few things back at the mansion. They're kind of important to me. I didn't really pack anything yesterday because

All of it."Behind him, Isabella was already recovering, smoothing her dress and summoning tears. "Dante, please, you don't understand—she's unstable, and she's been having episodes...""Not a word out of you." Dante didn't even turn around.Isabella's mouth snapped shut, genuine shock flickering across her features. Her father appeared in the hallway, wrinkles lining the corners of his mouth."Dant

A sharp slap cut across Mirabel’s face, the force whipping Mirabel’s head to the side, and a sickening crack echoed in the quiet room. Her jaw throbbed, and the metallic taste of blood immediately flooded her mouth.”“You have some nerve Mirabel!” Isabella folded her arms, stalking slowly. “First you ruin my birthday party, and now you seduce the man I've dreamed of marrying my whole life?” She gripped Mirabel's shoulders, her manicured nails digging into her skin like a vice.“I won't let you have him.” She threatened.“Isabella, please…”Mirabel pried at her clawing hands.“Now listen to me carefully.” Isabella gritted out. “You are going to tell Dante that you will not marry him.”“That's not possible Isabella, I can't…”Isabella let out a cruel, mocking laugh. “What? Suddenly you have a voice now? Because Dante is backing you up, you think you're someone.” She took two steps back and gestured at Mirabel. “I mean, just look at yourself.”“Why would someone like him even glance in yo

[Dante]The sharp throb in my left shin still burned, a physical reminder of Mirabel's defiance. It was the most exhilarating sensation I had felt in years. Stepping out of the Harrington living room, my mind replayed the audacity of her strike. Mirabel Harrington was supposed to be as invisible as a ghost, yet she looked at me with a fire that scorched right down my walls.Richard Harrington and his wife scrambled toward me as the door clicked shut, their faces twisted into desperate smiles. "Mr. Virelli, please you can't seriously be considering that girl, she’s unstable.” The slender woman pleaded, her voice grating like broken glass. I stopped, letting my shadow fall over them until they visibly shrank back."Your opinion on my future wife ceased to matter the moment you lied to my face," I told them, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. Isabella stood frozen behind them, her hands trembling with a mixture of rejected pride and pure malice. "She will ruin you, Dante, she is ju

The living room went completely silent. It wasn’t just a brief pause in the conversation. It was the kind of heavy, uncomfortable quiet that makes your ears ring. Nobody moved. For several long seconds, the only sound was the ticking of the old clock on the wall, marking time in a room where everyone had suddenly frozen.Dante Virelli had just spoken, and nobody could quite believe what they had heard.Mirabel stood glued to the carpet, staring at him. She waited for the punchline, for someone to laugh, but the silence dragged on. He had pointed directly at her. Not Isabella.Isabella was the golden child. She was the one who got the expensive dresses, the private tutors, the endless praise. Isabella was the daughter her parents had groomed for years to marry someone wealthy and powerful. Mirabel, on the other hand, was the secret they preferred to keep upstairs out of sight. But Dante Virelli didn't want the golden child. He wanted her.He has to be messing with us, Mirabel thought.

Two weeks had passed since the nightmare by the pool, but the scars ran deeper than skin.Mirabel stood in the expansive kitchen, the steady rhythm of her knife slicing through carrots the only sound breaking the silence. Her skin had finally healed, the angry red hives faded into faint patches that still itched when she moved too quickly. But the memory of burning water and Isabella’s cold laughter lingered like a bruise that refused to fade. She had nearly drowned that night, begging for mercy while her body betrayed her. And yet, no one in the Harrington family had spoken of it since. Not an apology. Not even an acknowledgement. She wiped her hands on her apron, the fabric rough against her sensitive skin. Invisible, she reminded herself. That’s safer.“Mirabel!” A young maid poked her head into the kitchen, breathless. “Miss Isabella wants you in the living room. Now.”Mirabel’s stomach tightened, but she nodded obediently. She set down the knife and made her way through the cor
