One night at Isabella’s birthday gala, Mirabel accidentally spills water on a masked guest, the ruthless billionaire Dante Virelli. The water triggers her painful allergy right in front of everyone. Dante, who is the son of his father’s mistress, needs to get married before he turns 29 or he will lose his father’s entire empire forever. He offers Mirabel a deal: stay with him for just ninety days and they can both escape their toxic families. What starts as a cold arrangement in his fancy penthouse slowly turns into a secret contract marriage to help him claim his inheritance. Behind Dante’s icy personality is a desperate man who sees his own painful childhood in Mirabel’s suffering. As they spend more time together, he has to take care of her during her allergic reactions, and his cold mask begins to crack. Mirabel, who has always been invisible, starts to come alive. She learns to stand up for herself, reveals family secrets, and falls for the man who refuses to look away from her scars. But Dante’s legitimate family, his half-brother Victor, and Isabella team up to tear them apart. Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Preparation.

[Mirabel]

The Harrington mansion buzzed with frantic energy as evening approached. Crystal glasses clinked, silverware gleamed, and the scent of fresh flowers filled every corner.

Mirabel moved silently through the chaos, her plain gray uniform blending her into the background like always.

She adjusted a heavy tray of champagne flutes on the sideboard, making sure each glass stood perfectly straight. Her hands worked quickly, practiced from years of doing this exact thing.

Tonight was Isabella’s twenty-second birthday gala, and the entire house had been turned upside down for days.

Mirabel kept her head down as she worked. She had learned long ago that being invisible was safer.

A soft sigh escaped her as she wiped a stray fingerprint from one of the glasses. Her family had always treated her differently.

When she was little, they had adopted Isabella because they said Mirabel was ‘unstable’ Not the kind of daughter they wanted on display. So Isabella became the shining star while Mirabel stayed in the shadows, quietly serving.

She didn’t dwell on it. Dwelling never changed anything.

“Mirabel.”

The sharp voice cut through the noise. Isabella stood in the doorway, looking flawless in a silk robe with her hair already styled for the party. Her lips curved into a sweet smile that never reached her eyes.

“Yes, Isabella?” Mirabel answered softly.

Isabella stepped closer, her heels clicking on the marble floor. “The silverware needs to be polished again. All of it. I want it to be perfect tonight. And if even one fork has a spot, you’ll be the one explaining it to Mother.”

The threat hung in the air, light but unmistakable.

Mirabel nodded without hesitation. “I’ll take care of it right away.”

Isabella’s smile widened. “Good. Wouldn’t want to ruin my night, would we?”

She turned and walked away, leaving the faint scent of expensive perfume behind.

Mirabel picked up the polishing cloth again, her fingers moving in steady circles even as her chest tightened.

She had perfected the art of smiling through the hurt. No matter how sharp the words, she kept her expression calm and pleasant. It was the only way to survive in this house.

A few minutes later, soft footsteps approached from the servants’ hallway. Two of the older maids, Rosa and Naomi, slipped into the dining room carrying fresh linens.

Rosa glanced around quickly before whispering, “You okay, sweetheart?”

Mirabel looked up and gave them a small, genuine smile. “I’m fine. Just making sure everything is ready for tonight.”

Naomi shook her head, her kind eyes full of worry. “That girl talks to you like you’re dirt under her shoe. It’s not right.”

“She’s just excited about her party,” Mirabel replied quietly, the same line she always used.

Rosa placed a warm hand on Mirabel’s shoulder for a brief second. “You have the kindest heart in this whole cold house. Don’t let them crush it.”

The two women exchanged a look before continuing with their work. Mirabel felt a flicker of warmth in her chest. The maids had always been like this, gentle with her when no one else was.

They knew how the family treated her, yet they still snuck her extra food, covered for her when she was tired, and spoke to her like she mattered. In a mansion full of disdain, their small kindnesses kept her going.

As the evening deepened, the excitement in the house grew louder. Guests would start arriving soon. Laughter and music drifted from the main hall where final decorations were being finished.

Mirabel overheard her mother’s voice giving strict instructions to the event planner. Her father was on the phone, bragging about how perfect the night would be for his ‘beautiful daughter.’

Mirabel kept polishing.

She was not invited to the gala. She never was. Her role was simple: stay out of sight, serve from the background, and disappear when the real guests appeared. That was how it had always been.

In the small maids’ changing room at the back of the house, the atmosphere felt different. A few of the staff had gathered there during a short break. Rosa was wrapping a bandage around her own wrist with exaggerated care.

“What are you doing?” Mirabel asked, frowning.

Rosa looked up with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Faking a sprain. Can’t serve with a bad wrist, can I?”

Naomi grinned beside her. “We talked about it. The family will notice if too many of us are missing from the floor tonight. But they won’t suspect anything if one maid gets hurt and another steps in quietly.”

Mirabel’s stomach dropped. She understood immediately what they were suggesting.

“No,” she said quickly, shaking her head. “I can’t. If they find out I’m at the party, even serving, they’ll…”

“They’ll punish you, yes,” Rosa interrupted gently. “But you’ve survived their punishments before. Tonight is Isabella’s big night. The whole city is coming. This might be your only chance to see it up close. To feel like you’re part of something beautiful, even if it’s just for a few hours.”

The other maids nodded, their faces full of encouragement.

Mirabel hesitated, her fingers twisting the edge of her uniform. Fear and longing twisted together inside her. She had spent years staying small, staying safe. But a tiny voice in her head whispered that she was twenty-two years old and had never once attended a party in her own home.

She only lived once.

The room stayed quiet as the maids waited for her answer.

Mirabel took a slow breath, then looked up at the women who had always protected her in their quiet ways.

“Okay,” she said softly, a mix of nerves and quiet determination in her voice. “I’m in.”
