Chapter 4

Author: Call and I'll Come
The elevator went straight up, the numbers flashing by so quickly that my nerves were on edge.

Daxton stood beside me, gripping the baseball bat, looking ready to swing at a moment's notice.

I patted him on the shoulder, signaling him to stay calm. There was no need for violence today.

The call rang for a long time, so long that the elevator had already dinged and stopped on the eighth floor before she finally answered.

The screen flickered, and Leah's face appeared. She was wearing a pristine white hotel bathrobe, the neckline slightly open, her hair still wet and dripping.

Behind her, the background was a flawless white wall with a warm, yellow wall sconce. It certainly looked like the inside of some budget hotel room.

"Honey, why are you video-calling me all of a sudden? I just got out of the shower and was about to go to bed." She yawned at the camera, her eyes full of exhaustion.

She even remembered to ask about me. "The weather in Brockdale is awful. It's so humid that I feel uncomfortable all over. How about you? Is it cold in our city?"

Standing outside our apartment, I stared at the security door, and my lips curled into a cold smile.

"It's pretty cool. Anyway, which hotel are you staying at? How's the place?"

Leah's eyes flickered for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. "Oh, I'm staying at the hotel that the company booked. It's just a budget hotel with a bed and four walls. There's nothing special about it."

"Is that so?" I asked, keeping my voice level. "Show me."

"Show you what? There's really nothing to see here..."

"Turn the camera around. I want to have a look." My tone left no room for argument.

Leah seemed to sense the firmness in my voice, but she was clearly confident that she'd staged everything perfectly, so she gave in. "Alright, alright. If my boyfriend's checking on me, I suppose I must play along!"

She smiled, held up the phone, and slowly panned around.

In the frame, it was exactly as she'd described—a single bed with white sheets, a nightstand, and a white wall. There was no clutter, nor anything that belonged to a man. The scene had been staged flawlessly.

But just as she turned the camera and swept past the nightstand, my gaze froze. It was a dark brown, solid-wood nightstand, and on it was a glass of water, resting on a wooden coaster.

The coaster had a tiny chip in its upper-left corner. I'd made it myself last year when Leah and I visited Chessaville. We'd gone to a craft workshop, and I'd carved it by hand. There wasn't another one like it in the world, and it had always sat on the bedside table in the master bedroom of our apartment.

The moment I saw it, I was certain that Leah was in our bedroom.

In that instant, the last shred of hope I had left was completely destroyed. In its place was a cold, calm fury.

"Done looking, honey? See? There's really nothing special here to see." Leah turned the camera back to her face, smiling as though she had nothing to hide.

"Go get some sleep, honey. I have a meeting with a client first thing tomorrow morning."

I stood outside the security door, looking at the woman full of lies on my screen. I didn't end the call. Instead, I looked straight into the camera and gave her a cold, crooked smile. "Is that so? Then open the door for me."

Leah froze on the screen. "Open what door?"

I raised my hand and pressed the wake button on the smart keypad lock.

The crisp electronic chime echoed through the empty hallway, and the exact same sound came through my phone from Leah's end.

I watched her expression stiffen instantly.

"Open the door," I said, enunciating every word. "I drove back from my parents' house in the middle of the night to bring you a Thanksgiving gift."

That was the last time I ever saw Leah.Eventually, I heard what became of her through the gossip circulating among people who knew her.Unable to make a living in this city and with no income and a taste for extravagant spending, she soon found herself hounded by debt collectors over the online loans she'd taken out to buy luxury goods. With nowhere else to turn, she had no choice but to return to her hometown.Apparently, her parents had even dipped into their retirement savings to help cover her debts. Now, she worked at a small factory in a small town, earning just 2,200 dollars a month and drifting through life aimlessly. As for Micah, once the incident spread through the industry, he, too, was unable to find a decent job. Rumor had it that he'd gone off to another city to take whatever odd jobs he could find.As for me, life didn't stop just because one terrible woman was out of it. If anything, it got even better. Two months after I kicked Leah out, a project I led turned

The next day was a workday, but I took the day off. Instead of going to the office, I headed to the mall.I picked out a firmer, more comfortable latex mattress for myself, bought a brand-new bedding set in a dark gray Morandi palette, and got some fir-scented diffusers and minimalist decorations. It was my life, after all. There was no reason to punish myself over a piece of trash. At around 2:00 pm, my phone started vibrating nonstop. It was Leah calling.I declined the call outright and promptly blocked her number. Before long, a message from a former colleague popped up.I used to work in the same industry as Leah, just in a different company. It was a small circle, so we had some mutual acquaintances. My former colleague sent me a shocked reaction sticker. "Damn! What happened between you and Leah? Her company is in absolute chaos today!"I replied calmly, "What kind of chaos?"He sent me a long voice message, his voice brimming with barely contained excitement over the g

At 11:30 pm, the hallway of Starlight Avenue Residences was anything but quiet. The arrival of the police, combined with the commotion earlier, had drawn several neighbors out of their apartments. They poked their heads through their open doors, eager to watch the drama unfold.Leah, wearing that wrinkled white blouse, struggled to drag the large black garbage bag I'd given her out the front door, her head hanging in shame.Micah, meanwhile, walked straight toward the elevator with his backpack slung over his shoulder, his face dark and sullen. He didn't say a word or even spare Leah a glance. As the neighbors whispered and pointed fingers, they stepped into the elevator. Just before the doors closed, Leah shot me one last venomous look.I met her gaze without the slightest concern, then slammed the security door shut with a resounding bang. Finally, I had some peace and quiet.Daxton let out a long sigh of relief and leaned the baseball bat against the corner of the wall. "That

"Geoff, please! I'm begging you. Don't kick me out!"Seeing what was happening, Leah dropped to her knees with a thud and clung desperately to my leg, throwing every last shred of dignity out the window."I really have nowhere else to go! I spent my entire paycheck this month on handbags, and I've maxed out my credit cards. I don't even have enough money to stay at a budget hotel tonight!"She looked up, trying to win me over with the same pitiful, helpless look she'd used on me so many times before."For the sake of the five years we've been together, please let me sleep on the couch just for tonight. I'll move out tomorrow. I promise!"I looked down at the woman before me. For five years, she'd always used this pathetic act to get things out of me. She'd asked me to cover her rent, buy her designer handbags so she could show off, and even pay for her younger brother's car."For the sake of the five years we've been together?" I echoed, letting out a cold laugh. "When you brou

When Micah heard Leah dumping all the blame on him, he let out a cold laugh from the bed. Without the slightest embarrassment, he threw back the covers and leisurely pulled on his T-shirt. There was no fear in his eyes, only a hint of mockery. "Leah, stop trying to pin this on me."Micah stood up and straightened his clothes, his voice hard and cold."You're the one who told me you and your boyfriend had fallen out of love a long time ago and were about to break up! You're the one who messaged me in the middle of the night, saying you felt lonely all by yourself in the apartment and asking me to come over and spend Thanksgiving with you!"He turned to me and shrugged, his tone carrying a hint of defiance and indifference. "Look, man, this really isn't on me. She told me she'd bought this apartment outright and that if I got together with her, I'd be the man of the house someday. I got played, too. I had no idea you'd be back today."I looked at this ambitious young man in his e

The smart lock let out a sharp beep as it unlocked, the sound especially jarring in the dead of night. All the color drained from Leah's face on the video call. With a clatter, her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. The screen flipped over, turning the image completely black, and the call was abruptly disconnected.I gave her no time to react or even get dressed. Gripping the door handle, I pressed it down hard and shoved the front door open. The living room's main lights were off, and a classic romance film was playing on the enormous projector screen.Half-eaten takeout boxes were scattered messily across the coffee table, along with two wine glasses that still had half a glass of red wine each. The air was thick with a mingled smell of alcohol, perfume, and the musky scent of sex. The smell made my stomach churn.Daxton strode in behind me. With a cold sneer, he immediately raised his phone and started recording.I crossed the living room without slowing down and k
