Chapter 4

Author: Eternity
Matteo’s hatred had not come from nowhere.

After I cried to Lorenzo that time, Vittori’s internal meeting nearly sent Serena away. Her background was unclear, and she had brought a child with her. Many in the family had never wanted her to stay.

The next morning, Matteo volunteered for the northern weapons transfer.

That route crossed the buffer zone between two rival families. Winter blocked the roads, ambushes were constant, and even Lorenzo rarely sent core men there. Matteo went himself, using a near-death assignment to buy Serena and her child a place in Vittori.

Before he left, he looked at me with eyes cold enough to burn.

“Aria, I must have been blind to ever put you first.”

I could not understand it then. They had left me first, broken every promise first, yet somehow they looked at me as if I were the unforgivable one.

Now his hand was locked around my throat.

My chest tightened from the lack of air, and the lights began to blur. I stopped struggling and looked directly at him.

There was no anger left in my eyes, only a hollow despair that made Matteo’s grip falter. For one brief second, shock crossed his face, as if he had finally recognized the girl beneath his hand.

That was when Adrian’s voice cut in.

“Matteo!”

The sound dragged Matteo back. He released me sharply, and I fell into the sofa, coughing until I could barely breathe. Adrian took one step toward me. I saw it and, stupidly, still felt a flicker of hope.

Then the inner door opened.

Serena stood there in a loose coat, clearly woken by the noise. Her eyes landed on Adrian, and the step he had just taken stopped. A moment later, he pushed me lightly away from him. It was not hard, but it was clear enough. My shoulder struck the edge of the sofa, and the burn on my back scraped against the fabric so badly my breath caught.

Dante had also moved half a step forward. When he saw Serena, his fingers tightened once, then loosened. In the end, he stopped by the door.

Matteo looked between them and gave a low laugh.

“Interesting.”

He turned to Adrian, his voice thick with mockery.

“You used to be the one always saying you’d protect Aria for life. Now you’re standing guard here for Serena too?”

Adrian did not answer.

Matteo glanced at Dante, his smile colder.

“Looks like the three of us really do have the same taste. We all ended up wanting the same woman.”

I looked at Adrian, waiting for him to explain, to defend me, or at least to tell Matteo to stop. He avoided my eyes, and the last bit of expectation went out like a spark in the rain.

Serena frowned, her gaze falling to my shoulder and back.

“Your burn…”

Only then did they notice the skin reddened by the coffee. The room fell quiet. Even the boy slowly stopped crying, though he clutched Serena’s clothes harder.

Serena lowered her head and soothed him before looking back at me.

“He’s still little. He was scared. I’ll apologize for him. The salve Adrian brought is still here. Let me treat it.”

I braced myself against the sofa and sat up, my voice hoarse.

“Let him apologize himself.”

Serena’s expression cooled.

“Aria, he’s only a child.”

“Apologize.”

Matteo’s anger came down at once. He stepped in front of Serena and the boy, disgust clear in his eyes.

“Serena already apologized for him. What else do you want? For a child to kneel and beg?”

Dante said nothing. Adrian did not speak either. One stood dark-faced by the door, the other watched me as if waiting for me to back down. The men who used to stand in front of me now stood in front of Serena and her child.

Serena bent and whispered into the boy’s ear. After a while, he turned his face toward me, mouth pushed into a pout, his voice almost too quiet to hear.

“Sorry.”

The apology was reluctant and wronged, as if he were the one being bullied.

Serena looked at me, her tone flattening too.

“He apologized. Can I treat your burn now?”

I did not answer.

Rain was still falling, and wind pushed in from the end of the corridor. I took Dante’s coat from my shoulders, set it on the chair beside me, and forced myself to stand with one hand on the doorframe.

Every movement pulled at the burn across my back, but I stepped into the rain without slowing.

The next morning, I met them in the old sitting room.Roman walked me to the door but did not enter. He said he would wait at the end of the corridor. Inside, Dante, Matteo, and Adrian stood beside the table, where the wooden box I had left behind had been placed.Dante spoke first.“I saw your suitcase that night. I knew you were packing, yet I still decided you were trying to hurt Serena. Every word I said pushed you to confess to something you had never done.”He took the auction invitation from his pocket. The note on the back was still clear.A birthday gift for Lorenzo.“I thought you wanted me there because you were bored. After you left, I learned you had gone to choose a gift for your brother.”“Aria, I’m sorry.”I turned to Matteo. His shoulder was still bandaged.“I found out what happened with the coffee,” he said. “The boy attacked you first. You never touched him.”He looked down at his right hand.“I did not ask what happened or look at your injuries. I grabbed your thro

The attack began at two in the morning. The alarm in the Vittori estate had barely sounded when an explosion tore through the eastern warehouse. The rival family cut the estate’s power and sent vehicles toward the western entrance, which meant they had obtained Vittori’s port-defense plans.Dante activated the backup system while Roman opened the surveillance map.“There’s an insider at the west gate,” Dante said. “I’ll take a team.”“They want you to leave the main house.” I pointed to the surveillance map. “Their real target is the port control room.”Dante studied the screens. The vehicles at the west gate were making plenty of noise, while the area around the control room was unnaturally quiet. He immediately redirected the main security force east.Matteo had already gone to the warehouse. Gunfire soon came through the radio. Two ambush teams had surrounded his men near the entrance.“Give me a car.” I stood. “There’s an old freight route behind the warehouse. It reaches the north

The rain had just stopped when the Vescari convoy entered the Vittori estate.Black sedans pulled up in front of the main house, where Dante was waiting with the security team. Matteo and Adrian stood behind him, neither moving forward.Roman stepped out first. After checking the guards and the surrounding grounds, he turned and offered me his hand. I took it and used his arm for support as I left the car.Dante had already approached the door, but he stopped when Roman placed a hand around my waist.Five months had passed, yet when he looked at me, he could not seem to find a single word.I wore a loose black dress beneath my coat, hiding most of the change in my body. Roman’s hand, however, remained near my stomach. Adrian noticed almost immediately.“You’re pregnant?”“A little over two months.”Roman pulled my coat closed, shielding me from the cold air left behind by the rain.Matteo stepped forward.“Was the journey difficult? I’ll have someone take you to your room.”When he rea

Five months later, I could chair Vescari’s port meetings on my own.Blackharbor’s winter was still brutal, but Roman had placed the eastern routes under my control. Even men who had served Vescari for years were expected to follow my decisions. That morning, a southern merchant demanded higher transit fees and tried to bypass me by addressing Roman directly.Roman sat at the other end of the table.“This route belongs to Aria.”The merchant pushed the contract toward me and let his hand drift toward my wrist. Roman caught it and pinned him against the table.“You may touch the contract. Not her.”The room went silent.I pulled the papers free and crossed out the revised price.“The fee stays the same. Refuse, and Vescari gives the cargo space to someone else.”The merchant looked to Roman.Roman released him and leaned back.“She was clear.”The agreement was signed on my terms.Afterward, I dropped the file in front of Roman.“You nearly broke his hand.”“He touched you.”“He was movi

Vittori EstateThree days after Aria left, Dante entered her room. The curtains were closed, and the white roses in the crystal vase had long since withered. Once, the three of them used to compete over who would replace them first. Later, all their attention shifted to Serena, and no one noticed how empty the room had become.Only a few old invitations remained in the wooden box. Dante picked one up and recognized the auction he had abandoned at the last minute. Serena had been injured at the training ground, so he left Aria and rushed to her. When he returned, he even accused Aria of being unreasonable. On the back of the invitation, Aria had written:A birthday gift for Lorenzo.Dante folded it and slipped it into his pocket. At the same time, Adrian had the private line beside Aria’s bed inspected. The technician quickly found the final call record.“She pressed it once before she left, but your number never answered.”The time matched the night Aria ran through the rain to the gue

By the time the convoy entered Blackharbor, night had already fallen. The northern port was buried under snow, its lights reduced to blurred lines in the storm. There were no shops along the road, no civilians in sight. The moment the Vescari cars passed the checkpoint, the iron gate locked behind us.I leaned against the back seat, every turn pulling at the burn across my back. Blood had started seeping through the bandage on my knee again. The doctor traveling with us asked twice to stop, but the convoy leader refused.“The Don is waiting.”We finally reached a seaside estate. Two rows of armed guards stood along the steps. When the door opened, a man approached and reached for me.“Don’t touch her.”The voice came from above. The man withdrew his hand at once.I looked up and saw Roman Vescari. He wore a black overcoat and stood in the snow with no guard daring to come too close. According to every story I had heard, Roman had taken control of Vescari, eliminated three rebellious br
