Chapter 8

Author: Summer Sway
The smug fell off her face the second the words left mine.

She gaped at me, mouth working, finally hissing, "What nonsense are you talking about? What would a little brat like you know?"

I could not be bothered to argue. I sat down on the sofa, crossed my legs, and ignored her.

That only made her curse even louder, but I felt nothing.

When my father came home, I calmly took out the document my assistant had sent me.

"Dad, take a look at this."

He saw the title. DNA Maternity Test. He went

The smug fell off her face the second the words left mine. She gaped at me, mouth working, finally hissing, "What nonsense are you talking about? What would a little brat like you know?"I could not be bothered to argue. I sat down on the sofa, crossed my legs, and ignored her. That only made her curse even louder, but I felt nothing. When my father came home, I calmly took out the document my assistant had sent me."Dad, take a look at this."He saw the title. DNA Maternity Test. He went very still.I explained, "No wonder she's always been so good to Nina. No wonder she was so eager to marry me off to that disabled man from the Mercer family.""Look at the relationship column."My father quickly scanned the report. His face turned livid, and he snapped his gaze toward Vivan."What is going on?"How is Nina your biological daughter?"Vivian's hands flew up. "What is this? You forged it, didn't you? Stop making things up!"She caught at his sleeve. "Daniel, we adopted Nina

Vivian's eyes widened as she pointed at me. "What kind of solution is that? Nina is your sister!"You're using her downfall as a chance to push her out of this family.""Dad," I cut her off, turning to him. "Is there any other option right now?"He said nothing. That was his answer. In the end, reputation came first. Compared to that, Nina meant nothing. The next day, Sterling Group released a statement. It declared that Nina was not a biological member of the Sterling family, but had been taken in years ago after I went missing. Now that the real daughter of the Sterling family–me–had been found, all ties with Nina would be officially severed. My father even appeared in a video himself, offering a public apology for the negative impact Nina had caused while using the family name. The statement exploded across the internet.People were shocked–and even more disgusted by Nina's behavior.[I knew it. No real heiress would act like that. Turns out she was adopted.][After wa

From upstairs I could still hear Nina sobbing through the front door, and Vivian on the other side, alternating between coaxing Nina and yelling at my dad. "Darling! Nina is your daughter–you can't be this heartless!"Just then, my phone buzzed.I glanced down. It was my assistant."Ms. Sterling. The work-up on Mrs. Sterling and Nina. We have it. It's exactly as you suspected."A faint smile tugged at my lips. "Send it over."A document and three audio clips dropped into my inbox a few seconds later.I tapped the first clip. Vivian's voice came out of it, low and confidential. "Nina, don't worry. As long as you secure Marcus, everything the Sterling family owns will eventually be yours. As for Penny… I have plenty of ways to get rid of her."If I had only heard the recordings, I might not have fully understood. After all, Nina had lived in the Sterling family for over a decade. Even if she was not related by blood, it was not impossible for Vivan to favor her. However, Vivi

Nina stared at my dad in disbelief, her eyes so red it looked like they might bleed. "Dad..."I let out a cold laugh in my mind. This was exactly how I knew it would end.The only thing my dad cared about was the family's reputation. Now that everything had been exposed in front of the Mercer family, there was no way Nina could talk her way out of it. And me–the real daughter–was the only card he had left.Vivian pulled Nina into her arms and shot me a vicious look. "We are going home. We will deal with this at home."She half-dragged Nina out. Nina's legs were weak, like she could barely stand. She muttered something under her breath, but no one cared to listen.By the time we were back at the house, Nina's mouth had swollen so badly the bottom half of her face looked like a different person's. Pus kept welling out at the corners. Even the staff started taking the long way around to avoid her.Not long after, Marcus walked in as if he owned the place. He took one look at her an

The lights came on.Nina was on her knees between the legs of a man we had never seen before. Her face was streaked with something thick and shining. The corner of her mouth was smeared red.No one at the door dared to make a sound. She squinted against the sudden light, raising a hand to shield her eyes, and mumbled, "Mom…?"froze for a few seconds before snapping back to herself. She grabbed a coat from the floor and threw it over Nina. "Nina! What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?"Her hands trembled as she tried to wipe the mess off Nina's face, but the mixture of fluids and blood gave off a sickening smell, making her gag.My father's face had gone dark with anger. He grabbed Nina by the arm and yanked her to her feet."Get back home right now! You are an embarrassment!"Nina finally seemed to come to her senses. She shook them off."Mom! I did this for the Sterling family! If I hadn't gotten here in time–"Before she could finish, my father slapped her hard acro

I had no idea what she was up to, but I followed her up.The moment we stepped inside, she yanked off her mask. A foul, rotting smell hit me immediately. Her mouth was covered in angry red sores–disgusting to look at.I forced a concerned tone. "What happened to you?"She tossed the mask aside. "The piercings got infected. You used to be a doctor. Take a look."I hesitated. She suddenly grabbed a knife and pressed it against her face, her voice turning hysterical. "Hurry up! Or I'll tell Mom and Dad you've been bullying me!"That trick of hers had a hundred percent hit rate. She might be a foster, but after fifteen years my dad treated her like blood. He defended her on autopilot.Just earlier, even though I was clearly the one wronged, he had not said a word.I let out a quiet sigh. "Fine. Put the knife down. Looks like the friction is too much. The implant sites are tearing.""I'll go to the pharmacy and get you something to ease it for now."She smiled, smug. "By the wa
