Heat rushed to my face, but I forced myself to stand tall. “Not as your wife in the sentimental sense,” I clarified. “A political alliance. Kieran won’t let me go easily, but if I become yours, he’ll have no choice but to step back. Marrying me means taking something from him. Something he considers his.”

Magnus was silent, his gaze flickering with something unreadable.

Then he leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Tell me, Eira… do you think you’re worth enough to make me risk my interests? Why should I dirty my hands to spite Kieran?”

I searched for an answer, my mind racing, trying to come up with the best reason. Although I had said I was going to offer myself to him, that wasn’t a good enough reason for him to help me.
