Chapter 2

Penulis: Blue Carberry
I was stunned.

Aunt Marlene had never mentioned any of this. Had she really been quietly paying off my family's debts on her own for three years?

Back then, when Aunt Marlene came home and saw me holding the ledger, she only said flatly, "I've paid off part of what your parents owed. Once you start working, you'll pay off the rest yourself. There's no rush."

Her tone was as neutral as if she were just assigning me a chore.

Even so, I was deeply moved. I thought that although she was usually distant, she truly cared about family after all.

After I graduated, I went to her on my own. She dug up an account number and sent it to me. "It's 4,000 dollars a month. Just transfer it to this account."

From that day on, I carried a debt that did not exist.

I kept paying it for four years, 4,000 dollars every month without fail. All told, it came to 192,000 dollars.

During those years, I worked from dawn until late at night, ate only two meals a day, lived in a run-down part of town, and never dared to go to a single gathering. I factored every bonus into the repayment plan and was too afraid to take a sick day even when I was ill. I lived like a machine.

Last month, I ran a fever of 104 degrees and forced myself to finish a project proposal before going to the hospital. The ER doctor told me that if I had come in two hours later, my life would have been in danger.

Even then, I refused when the doctor wanted to admit me. I went home as soon as the IV was finished.

Only now did I realize that the debt I had worked myself to the bone to repay had never been real. Every dollar I had saved at the risk of my own life had gone straight to Uncle Ronald.

Aunt Marlene had never been particularly good to me while I was growing up, yet I was still grateful to her for paying for my education and helping me with the debt. Now, that gratitude looked like a joke.

A chill ran through my entire body, and I was desperate to confront her. However, I forced myself to stay calm. There were still too many things I needed to confirm.

If the debt was fake, had my parents' houses really been sold off to pay it back when I was little?

Standing outside the bank, I took out my phone and booked a train ticket back to my hometown. There were some things I needed to see with my own eyes.

When the train pulled in, I went straight to the old house I remembered. The stairwell was the same as ever, though most of the green paint on the handrail had worn away.

I took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

A middle-aged woman answered. I told her I was trying to track down family and was looking for the people who used to live there. She did not ask many questions and stepped aside to let me in.

"I bought this house on July 16, 2008. The lady of the house handled the sale with me."

July 16, 2008.

My parents had already been dead for half a month by then. How could either of them have handed over the house?

I forced myself to keep it together and smiled. "Do you still have the contract or any other paperwork from back then? I'd like to look at the handwriting to make sure it's the person I'm looking for."

She went into the back room, searched for a long while, and came back with a stack of yellowed papers.

I pulled up the photos of Mom's handwriting on my phone and compared them for a long time. The handwriting looked exactly like Mom's, yet some of the letters looked slightly shaky, as if someone had been carefully imitating it.

I held back the emotions churning inside me and found a photo of Aunt Marlene on my phone. "Could you take a look? Is this the woman?"

She only glanced at it before nodding. "Yes, that's her."

I stared at the official stamp on the forensic report for a full three minutes.

The handwriting analysis concluded that the questioned signature and the reference samples had not been written by the same person.

Those few short words burned into me like a hot iron.

The signature on the sales contract had been written by Aunt Marlene. She had forged Mom's handwriting and secretly sold the house that rightfully belonged to our family.

My heart sank as I slowly pieced together all the lies she had told me over the years.

She had spun a story without a single hole in it. She told me that a young woman on her own was not safe, that the lenders had nasty tempers, and that it would be best for her to deal with them on my behalf.

She never let them contact me and only gave me a single account number for regular transfers. She also said the lenders needed the money urgently and that monthly payments would keep them from causing trouble.

I kept thinking about how much she had paid off for my parents and did not want her to end up out of pocket. On top of the fixed 4,000 dollars each month, I scraped together an extra 1,000 dollars and sent that over as well.

I smiled a little and took a sip of my drink. Steam rose from the pot of seafood and blurred my vision. Yet this time, it was not because I wanted to cry. It was because this meal felt so warm.…By the time we left the police station, it was already evening.Kate walked on my left and wrapped half of her scarf around me. "So what are you going to do now?""First, I'm going to get the money sorted out. As for the house, my lawyer said I can file a civil suit to get back what it sold for or get compensation.""I mean you, going forward. Work, life, what's your plan?"I thought about it for a moment. "I want to stay in my hometown for a while.""Your hometown?""Yeah. I haven't visited my parents' graves in two years. There are also some things I want to sort out while I'm here."Kate did not ask anything else. She only said, "Okay, go for it. If anything comes up, give me a call."I nodded. She put me in a taxi and stood by the curb waving at me. "Remember to eat!"I smiled

He stood up and smiled at me. "Josie."I recognized him right away. It was Roger, the man I had once believed was one of my parents' lenders."Mr. Kemp, what are you—""I heard about what happened." He walked over. "I went down to the police station today and gave a statement. I made it clear to them that your parents never owed anyone money."What happened with your aunt is partly on me too. I should have asked more questions back then—""Mr. Kemp, none of this is your fault.""It's not easy being a young woman out there on your own."He patted my shoulder. "If your parents were still here, they would never have let you go through all this."With that, he turned and left.…The next afternoon, Kate arrived. The moment she came out of the arrivals gate, she pulled me into a bear hug so tight that she nearly squeezed the air out of me."You've lost weight." She let go and looked me up and down. "Have you been skipping meals again?""I've been eating.""Like hell you have.

I held the door handle and paused for a second. "If Mom were alive, she would never let you treat her daughter like this."I opened the door and walked out.The lights in the hallway were a harsh, pale white. After a few steps, my legs gave out, and I leaned against the wall. My heart was pounding so fast that it felt like it was about to leap out of my throat.A female officer walked over, glanced at me, and handed me a cup of water. "Are you okay?"I took the cup, my fingers still trembling. "I'm fine."She looked at me for a couple of seconds, then turned and left without asking anything else.I stood in the hallway holding the cup and slowly drank all of it. Then I took out my phone and saw a message from Kate.[Jo, I got the time off. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon.]I froze for a moment and quickly replied. [What are you coming here for? Didn't I tell you not to?]She wrote back instantly. [Already bought the plane ticket. Too bad.]An eye-roll emoji followed. As I l

"Wade's different. He's a man. He has to settle down, build a career, and buy a house and a car!""So what? That means I'm supposed to pay off his debts for him? For the rest of his life?"Aunt Marlene buried her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving. "Your parents died young. I'm your aunt, so I had a responsibility to take care of you... but Wade is my own son. I can't just turn my back on him—""So you take care of him by scamming me?""I didn't scam you!" Her head snapped up, her eyes bloodshot. "Those debts... Those debts were real—""What debts?""The ones your parents owed me!"She practically screamed it, and the whole room seemed to shake.I stared at her."Do you know how much I helped your parents when they were alive? When your dad's business was short on money, I secretly took our family's savings and gave it to him. When your Uncle Ronald found out, we had a huge fight and nearly got divorced."Her voice grew louder, and her words came faster, as if things sh

"They never divorced," I said.Mr. Holm looked up at me."I looked into it. Marlene Brandt and Ronald Hatch did officially file for divorce in 2009, but they've been living together as husband and wife the whole time, and there are tons of photos of them together on social media."On top of that, the transfer records for Ronald's account show that every month, right after the money comes in, it gets moved into Marlene's account or her son's."I pulled up the screenshots I had taken the night before and handed my phone to him.Mr. Holm went through them one by one, and the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. "Then this just got a lot easier."He closed the folder. "The police have already opened a case, and Marlene is cooperating with the investigation. She'll be held in custody first while the police wrap up their investigation over the next few weeks."After that, the case goes to the district attorney's office for review. If the evidence holds up, the DA will press charges."

The stairwell was completely silent except for the sound of my own footsteps. When I got downstairs, a cold wind swept down my collar, and I shivered. Only then did I realize I had broken out in a cold sweat. My phone buzzed. It was a message from my lawyer: [Did they take her in?]I replied: [Yes.][Don't worry. The chain of evidence is pretty much complete. Come by the office tomorrow morning, and we'll go over the next steps.]I leaned against a lamppost by the side of the road and looked up at the sky. It was a dull gray, without a single star in sight. The streetlight stretched my shadow out long and thin.I stood there for so long that my legs went numb. Then I opened my contacts, found a name, and hit 'call'.It rang three times before she picked up. "Jo? What's up?"It was Kate Delmore, my college roommate."Nothing. I just wanted someone to talk to."The line went quiet for a moment. "Where are you?""Back in my hometown.""Have you been crying?"I reached up to t
