Chapter 4

Autor: Blue Carberry
The message ended with a hug emoji.

I closed the chat and nearly crushed my phone in my hand.

Like my parents? What right did she have to bring them up?

I shoved my phone into my pocket and stood at the side of the road, taking a deep breath. The wind blew past and made my eyes sting. However, I had no time to feel sorry for myself. There were things I needed to take care of before the weekend.

I had the forensic report on the sales contract, my bank transfer records, my cousin's credit report, and the timeline my lawyer had helped me put together. It covered everything from the year my parents died when I was ten up to the present, with every payment and every date laid out clearly.

I was not about to walk into this unprepared.

Before I even reached the front door, I could hear lively chatter and laughter coming from inside. Aunt Marlene's voice was the loudest of all. "Our Wade just got promoted to department manager. From now on, his monthly salary will be at least this much..."

She must have gestured with her hand, because a circle of relatives chimed in right away.

"Oh my, your Wade really has made something of himself."

"He sure has. Not like mine, who does nothing but play video games all day."

"You've done such a great job raising him."

I stood outside the door listening to all of it and found it painfully ironic. Done a great job raising him? The son she raised was blowing the money I had worked myself half to death for.

The moment I walked in, Aunt Marlene greeted me warmly, "Josie, you made it! You've lost weight. Have you been skipping meals again? Come, have some fruit. Dinner will be ready soon."

I smiled but did not move.

She turned and headed back into the kitchen, talking to the relatives as she went.

"This girl has never given me a moment of worry, but she's always been too independent for her own good. She works so hard out there on her own and still sends money home every month. I keep telling her she doesn't have to, but she insists."

The relatives nodded along.

"Josie really is such a sensible girl."

"She is. She knows how to be grateful. It wasn't easy for her aunt to raise her."

"She's a lot better than mine, that's for sure."

As I listened, I slowly clenched the fabric over my knees.

Sensible and grateful. I had been hearing those words for more than ten years, and every time, they made me feel as though I owed Aunt Marlene a debt I could never repay in my lifetime.

Only now did I know that the debt had never existed. The gratitude she demanded from me had been built on a scam.

Dinner was soon on the table. The relatives showered her with compliments as they ate, and the mood was festive. Meanwhile, the fire burning in my chest made it hard to breathe.

I set down my fork and slowly looked up. "Aunt Marlene, do I still have a debt to pay this month?"

The noise around the table went quiet for a moment.

Aunt Marlene froze, then quickly laughed it off. "Oh, sweetheart, why bring that up at dinner?"

"I just want to know which lender is asking for the money."

Aunt Marlene's smile stiffened, and Wade froze with his fork halfway to his mouth. The whole table suddenly turned tense.

Aunt Marlene let out an awkward laugh. "Didn't I already tell you? The lenders don't want to be contacted. All you need to do is pay."

"I've been paying for four years now. I'd like to know how much I've paid off and how much is left."

Aunt Marlene waved a hand. "You're almost done now, sweetie. Stop worrying about all that. Would your own aunt lie to you?"

Her eyes flickered as she said it.

The relatives around the table jumped in to smooth things over.

"She's right, Josie. Your aunt raised you all these years. Why would she ever hurt you?"

"She carried the whole burden for you all that time!"

"Why go looking for the lenders out of nowhere? What if they start harassing a young woman like you? Your aunt is only looking out for you!"

Looking out for me? That was the very excuse she had used for years to keep me pinned down.

I lowered my eyes, and the corner of my mouth twitched. Then I slowly stood up and took my phone out of my bag. "I came here today to show everyone something. While I'm at it, I'd also like to know whose pockets the money I've been paying for four years has really been lining."

I smiled a little and took a sip of my drink. Steam rose from the pot of seafood and blurred my vision. Yet this time, it was not because I wanted to cry. It was because this meal felt so warm.…By the time we left the police station, it was already evening.Kate walked on my left and wrapped half of her scarf around me. "So what are you going to do now?""First, I'm going to get the money sorted out. As for the house, my lawyer said I can file a civil suit to get back what it sold for or get compensation.""I mean you, going forward. Work, life, what's your plan?"I thought about it for a moment. "I want to stay in my hometown for a while.""Your hometown?""Yeah. I haven't visited my parents' graves in two years. There are also some things I want to sort out while I'm here."Kate did not ask anything else. She only said, "Okay, go for it. If anything comes up, give me a call."I nodded. She put me in a taxi and stood by the curb waving at me. "Remember to eat!"I smiled

He stood up and smiled at me. "Josie."I recognized him right away. It was Roger, the man I had once believed was one of my parents' lenders."Mr. Kemp, what are you—""I heard about what happened." He walked over. "I went down to the police station today and gave a statement. I made it clear to them that your parents never owed anyone money."What happened with your aunt is partly on me too. I should have asked more questions back then—""Mr. Kemp, none of this is your fault.""It's not easy being a young woman out there on your own."He patted my shoulder. "If your parents were still here, they would never have let you go through all this."With that, he turned and left.…The next afternoon, Kate arrived. The moment she came out of the arrivals gate, she pulled me into a bear hug so tight that she nearly squeezed the air out of me."You've lost weight." She let go and looked me up and down. "Have you been skipping meals again?""I've been eating.""Like hell you have.

I held the door handle and paused for a second. "If Mom were alive, she would never let you treat her daughter like this."I opened the door and walked out.The lights in the hallway were a harsh, pale white. After a few steps, my legs gave out, and I leaned against the wall. My heart was pounding so fast that it felt like it was about to leap out of my throat.A female officer walked over, glanced at me, and handed me a cup of water. "Are you okay?"I took the cup, my fingers still trembling. "I'm fine."She looked at me for a couple of seconds, then turned and left without asking anything else.I stood in the hallway holding the cup and slowly drank all of it. Then I took out my phone and saw a message from Kate.[Jo, I got the time off. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon.]I froze for a moment and quickly replied. [What are you coming here for? Didn't I tell you not to?]She wrote back instantly. [Already bought the plane ticket. Too bad.]An eye-roll emoji followed. As I l

"Wade's different. He's a man. He has to settle down, build a career, and buy a house and a car!""So what? That means I'm supposed to pay off his debts for him? For the rest of his life?"Aunt Marlene buried her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving. "Your parents died young. I'm your aunt, so I had a responsibility to take care of you... but Wade is my own son. I can't just turn my back on him—""So you take care of him by scamming me?""I didn't scam you!" Her head snapped up, her eyes bloodshot. "Those debts... Those debts were real—""What debts?""The ones your parents owed me!"She practically screamed it, and the whole room seemed to shake.I stared at her."Do you know how much I helped your parents when they were alive? When your dad's business was short on money, I secretly took our family's savings and gave it to him. When your Uncle Ronald found out, we had a huge fight and nearly got divorced."Her voice grew louder, and her words came faster, as if things sh

"They never divorced," I said.Mr. Holm looked up at me."I looked into it. Marlene Brandt and Ronald Hatch did officially file for divorce in 2009, but they've been living together as husband and wife the whole time, and there are tons of photos of them together on social media."On top of that, the transfer records for Ronald's account show that every month, right after the money comes in, it gets moved into Marlene's account or her son's."I pulled up the screenshots I had taken the night before and handed my phone to him.Mr. Holm went through them one by one, and the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. "Then this just got a lot easier."He closed the folder. "The police have already opened a case, and Marlene is cooperating with the investigation. She'll be held in custody first while the police wrap up their investigation over the next few weeks."After that, the case goes to the district attorney's office for review. If the evidence holds up, the DA will press charges."

The stairwell was completely silent except for the sound of my own footsteps. When I got downstairs, a cold wind swept down my collar, and I shivered. Only then did I realize I had broken out in a cold sweat. My phone buzzed. It was a message from my lawyer: [Did they take her in?]I replied: [Yes.][Don't worry. The chain of evidence is pretty much complete. Come by the office tomorrow morning, and we'll go over the next steps.]I leaned against a lamppost by the side of the road and looked up at the sky. It was a dull gray, without a single star in sight. The streetlight stretched my shadow out long and thin.I stood there for so long that my legs went numb. Then I opened my contacts, found a name, and hit 'call'.It rang three times before she picked up. "Jo? What's up?"It was Kate Delmore, my college roommate."Nothing. I just wanted someone to talk to."The line went quiet for a moment. "Where are you?""Back in my hometown.""Have you been crying?"I reached up to t
