Chapter 3

작가: Pork Chops
I planned on preparing for the wedding after that day. Much to my surprise, my soon-to-be husband had already settled everything alone.

Our parents officially met the day before our wedding. Because Dad wasn't feeling well, I went with Mom instead.

A man in a long trench coat smiled warmly and strolled toward me inside the massive restaurant lobby. "Hi, I'm Eugene Joubert."

"I'm Emily Claremond," I answered.

The man led us to a private room. Once the doors opened, I froze on the spot.

I knew my future husband was my parents' longtime business partner, who owned a chain of biological research companies. However, I never thought I'd see my graduate tutor, Professor Yara Lowthe, and her husband, Ian Joubert, sitting before me.

I became good friends with Professor Lowthe when I was a graduate student. Despite being several decades apart in age, we could talk about many things.

I once met Eugene when I delivered his lunchbox on Professor Lowthe's behalf. At the time, Eugene wore a face mask and a black backpack. He greeted me once, but I didn't see his full face because Jon phoned me to help him with Julie's move.

Now, I finally got a proper look at Eugene. He and Jon were as different as the sun and moon in terms of looks. He was also much more mature than Jon and didn't say much the entire time.

Eugene's family accepted all the conditions my family raised.

Professor Lowthe had even postponed attending a conference exchange abroad for the wedding. She held my hand, saying, "Let's host this wedding based on what you have in mind. Eugene has told me that he'll respect all your decisions. My husband and I agree, too."

"Thank you…" I instinctively voiced.

A frown marred Professor Lowthe's face. "You don't need to thank us. This arrangement is exactly how things should be."

Then, she told Eugene to take me on a stroll while she and the others chatted alone.

Eugene brought me out for a walk by the river. Surprisingly, my heart raced as we walked in the quiet night.

"Emily?" Eugene called out.

I turned to face him.

That was when he took out a ring box from behind him. "Although our engagement has been hasty, I can't help feeling like something's missing…"

Eugene proposed to me. When he popped the question, fireworks shot into the sky and brightened the once-tranquil river. Drones then appeared in midair, spelling out the question he asked and my name.

I never imagined Eugene would blow so much money on this. After all, when I was with Jon, he had only drunkenly asked me if I wanted to marry him.

The day after I agreed to marry Eugene, all major media companies reported on his unprecedented proposal.

Likewise, I posted the news about my wedding on my social media. Many friends were unaware of my situation and thought I was still dating Jon. After seeing my posts, they congratulated me and asked about what happened.

I pinned pictures from my wedding photoshoot with Eugene to the top of my social media accounts. Our wedding picture also became my Facebook cover photo.

Jon landed back in the country on the day of my wedding. He realized I wasn't there to pick him up and was enraged. He immediately phoned multiple times. Yet, I had long blocked his number, so I didn't know about those calls.

Jon eventually called me with someone else's phone. Once the call connected, he bellowed, "Didn't I ask you to pick me and Julie up from the airport? Where the hell are you?"

"Duh! I'm not free because I'm getting married—"

"Who on earth are you marrying if I'm at the airport? Well? Tell me!"

I hung up on him, which caused him to go insane and call all my relatives and friends for answers.

Jon finally realized what was happening. He gawped at me like he wanted to explain things. However, he couldn't muster any words to justify his actions since he and Julie had planned everything together.Back then, Julie suggested that they force me into a corner so that I would leave Eugene and return to Jon's side. Jon agreed to it at the time. Yet, he never considered that even if I returned to him, I would be mentally and emotionally destroyed.I realized then that Jon was always this way—he only wanted the world to revolve around him. He would break down if he no longer possessed something he could always control. He would use all sorts of schemes to regain that thing. I happened to be that thing he could no longer control. The live stream was still ongoing when the police came to arrest Jon and Julie. I looked into the live stream camera, staring down the commenters who spread lies and viciously wounded me with their words. "You'll suffer the same consequences as Jon and

"It's all in the past. My main reason for doing it was because your marriage emotionally rattled me. After all, I never thought my wife would marry someone else after I returned from a trip," Jon emphasized.Julie added, "He even bought you so many things. Yet, all he got in return was you marrying another man. How could he not be triggered?"I slapped Julie just then.It immediately angered everyone around us, and they questioned what right I had to slap her. They claimed Jon would've died long ago if Julie hadn't kept him company. That meant I would've been responsible for Jon's death.I faced the person who spoke the loudest in the bunch head-on. "I naturally have my reasons for slapping her. You don't need to be so anxious about it."Julie glowered at me with rage."I'm giving you one last chance, Jon. If you apologize to me now and post a public apology online, I can spare you the humiliation. However, if you refuse, don't blame me for taking drastic measures."Jon remained

"I won't," I answered before hanging up. Immediately after, the video call between Julie and me was uploaded online.Eugene wanted to hire a lawyer for me at that point, but I stopped him. "It's fine. Let them make a big deal of things until they can no longer bear the consequences.""What about you?" Eugene gazed at it with concern.A chuckle left my lips. "Let's go on a holiday! We'll treat it as our honeymoon.""Alright."So, we booked a hotel and bought flight tickets at once. We changed our phone numbers, headed to the airport, and got ready to board our plane by dawn.…While abroad, Eugene and I quickly warmed up to each other and had loads of fun. I didn't check my socials even once. Plus, my parents were the only ones who could contact us.The day we were about to return to the country, I opened WhatsApp and saw messages from my friends. Only then did I learn Jon had gained millions of fans through his trending incident. Moreover, he and Julie hosted a live stream

Eugene brought a plate of sliced apples he had prepared earlier when he realized I was getting emotional. Not only that, but he also came over with a slice of my favorite strawberry cake. "Don't be upset. Here. Have something to eat."I was about to exit the surveillance footage player when I saw Julie picking up the laptop in my old home. I found it odd because she stared at my laptop for a long time. Almost half an hour passed when Julie put it down. She then took many photos of it before leaving with a satisfied look."I've always trusted Jon. I thought he wouldn't harm my cat even if he isn't fond of cats. Who'd have known—" Just then, my phone wouldn't stop chiming. Strange. Who would text me at this time?I switched on my phone and realized my social media had blown up. Although I sometimes posted videos, they never gained this much traction. With curiosity brimming in me, I opened the app.Various insulting comments popped up. Some of the users also posted my personal info

We soon arrived at our marital home.I had just exited the car when I noticed the fresh flowers and welcome message at the door. Even the house's exterior design was exactly how I had always wanted my home to look. At that rate, I wondered if Eugene was secretly spying on me. How else could he have known me so well? Our respective parents had already prepared the food and even brought a cake. At the end of dinner, I didn't feel the same pressure as when I introduced Jon to my parents.Back then, I had to check if Jon was upset before saying anything during dinner. That was because Jon felt my parents disliked and regarded him with contempt. I didn't know how my parents gave him that impression. Still, I would remind my parents that he was sensitive about these things during every visit to avoid upsetting him. That led to my parents not daring to make jokes like they did today. Family meals with Jon were often tense. Meanwhile, everyone had a good time at tonight's dinner. I di

"How could you hit me?" Jon muttered."Why? Am I not allowed to hit you?" I snapped.Jon's eyes widened with disbelief. There was a shattered look on his face while tears welled in his eyes. He grabbed my hand and said, "You can talk things through with me if you're upset. Don't you know that you'll make me sad by doing this?"Sad? Over our long dating life, he and Julie behaved out of bounds and wounded me many times. Why didn't he think about talking things out with me back then? I only stopped being the third person, awkwardly wedged between their unusually close friendship. Yet, he felt aggrieved just because of that. I couldn't understand his sense of logic at all.As for Julie, she acted like I had done something gravely wrong. She tugged at Jon's arm and said, "Jon changed his flights several times to make it back earlier! He stayed up late to think of gifts to get you!"While he was pouring all his effort into you, you were busy organizing a wedding here with someone els
