Alexei

The sun is up. It’s a pale, watery thing, climbing over the eastern wall as if it’s hesitant to illuminate the mess we’ve made.

Kieran and I spent the past few hours curled around each other, too tired and sad to do more than offer each other comfort. Even that, edged with tragedy as it is, is precious to me.

Marcus assigned teams to work in shifts to start clearing the mess. He argued when Kieran told him to get some rest, that he’d take over.

Kieran simply stared at him until he dropped his eyes and muttered, “Yes, Alpha,” before trudging to his room.

The courtyard is eerily quiet. There’s no more screaming, or clashing of steel. All that’s left is the low murmur of the healers moving among the wounded and the wet, slapping sound of mops on stone.

I lift a beam of wood that fell from the stable roof during the fighting. It weighs as much as a horse, but I hoist it easily, setting it aside so two younger guards can reach the water trough beneath it.

They froze in place when the

KieranMy hands are shaking.I stare at them. They’re pale against the heavy, blue velvet of the ceremonial robe. I clasp them together, willing the tremors to stop, but my pulse is hammering in my wrists like a trapped bird.Having all my bits dangling freely under the robe, and knowing the entire pack will be getting to see them up close and personal soon, is not helping."You look like you’re going to a funeral," Eli says. “This is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. Breathe.”He’s adjusting the collar of my robe. His touch is surprisingly gentle, despite the sharp edge of his tone. He’s wearing a silk tunic the color of wine, paired with tight black leather trousers, and for once, he isn't vibrating with chaotic energy. He looks solemn."It feels a little like a funeral," I whisper. "My dignity is dying today.""Don't be dramatic," Eli chides, smoothing a wrinkle on my shoulder. "It’s a mating ceremony. It’s ancient. It’s sacred.""It’s voyeuristic," I hiss. "We are goin

RonanLoving Eli is like trying to hold a storm in a glass jar. It is beautiful, chaotic, and if you take your hand off the lid for even a second, the glass will shatter and the roof will blow off.I’m currently polishing the silver clasps of my ceremonial cloak. We’re in the guest chambers of the Silvercrest Keep. In the west wing this time, so my little storm is satisfied with that much at least. The stone is thick, the air cool, but Eli is doing his best to heat the room with sheer, bona fide nonsense."I'm just saying," Eli says, pacing the rug in front of the hearth. He’s wearing a black silk robe that’s falling off one shoulder, revealing the pale skin he knows I like to mark. "Alexei is enthusiastic. He has the spirit. But does he have the technique? Does he understand the nuance of the knot? The psychology of the bind? The importance of aftercare after a good spanking?"I don’t look up from the silver. "Alexei killed a warlord with his own hammer Eli. I don’t think he needs a

KieranI’m trying to organize the seating chart for the feast. It’s a logistical nightmare that requires the strategic mind of a general and the patience of a saint. I have the former. I am rapidly losing the latter."You can't put Elder Merryweather next to the drum circle," Eli says. He’s currently lying upside down on my chaise lounge, his legs kicking idly in the air, blood presumably rushing to his head and fueling his insanity. "She has a delicate constitution. The bass will liquefy her brain.""Elder Merryweather is deaf in one ear," I reply, moving a small wooden token representing the Elder to the far end of the table. "I’m placing her near the cheese board. It’s the only thing she loves more than complaining.""Fair," Eli concedes. He rolls over, tumbling off the chaise with a grace that is entirely annoying, and lands on his feet. He wanders over to my desk, picking up a quill and tickling his own chin with the feather. "So. The seating is boring. Let's talk about the imp

EliThe invitation is heavy. It’s thick, cream-colored cardstock that feels expensive between my fingers. It smells like cedar and ink and a little bit of Kieran’s nervous sweat, though that might be my imagination. The calligraphy is elegant and precise. Kieran probably did it himself. The Silvercrest Pack invites you to witness the Mating Union of Alpha Kieran and Alexei of Silvercrest.I read it once. I read it twice. Then I shriek. It isn't a dignified sound. It is a high-pitched, tea-kettle noise that startles the birds out of the trees near our porch.“Finally!” I yell, waving the card in the air like a flag of victory. “Finally! The idiot did it! The absolute pinecone finally popped the question!”Ronan is sitting on the steps, whittling a piece of wood. He doesn't look up, but the corner of his mouth twitches. “I take it the courier arrived. We already knew this was coming.”“The courier arrived, delivered the goods, and made my year,” I say, hopping down the steps to shove th

AlexeiKieran is vibrating. Not literally, but his wolf is right under the skin. It’s a low-level hum, a static charge that makes the hair on my arms stand up whenever he brushes against me. And he’s brushing against me a lot. We’re walking through the woods, the trees thick and ancient around us, their branches tangling together like fingers laced in prayer. The moon is high, a bright, watchful eye that turns the leaves into silver coins. It’s quiet, save for the crunch of our boots on the dirt and the distant, rhythmic chirping of crickets.Usually, silence with Kieran is easy. It’s a settled thing. Like dust motes floating in a sunbeam. But tonight, the silence has teeth. It’s heavy, filled with unspoken words and a frantic energy that radiates off him in waves. He stops suddenly, turning to look at a particularly knotted oak tree as if he’s never seen a tree before.“Do you think the moss is thicker on the north side?” he asks in weirdly strained voice.I blink at him. “I don’t k

KieranThe sun is too bright. It cuts through the gap in the curtains, a relentless, golden intruder demanding that the day begin.I squeeze my eyes shut and burrow deeper into the warmth beside me."You're awake," a rough voice rumbles.I feel the vibration of the words against my chest and open one eye blearily. Alexei is watching me. He’s propped up on one elbow, his hair a chaotic halo of honeyed waves, his face scrubbed clean. The bruise on his jaw is blooming into a spectacular shade of purple, but his eyes are clear."I’m not awake," I mutter, turning my face into his neck. "I’m in a coma. Wake me next spring."Alexei chuckles. He runs a large, warm hand down my spine, his calloused fingertips snagging slightly on the silk of my skin. It anchors me. It reminds me that I’m here, in my bed, and not in the cold, empty void of the last month."The pack is waiting, Alpha," he says softly. "They’re nervous. They think you're going to come out breathing fire and start hanging people.
