To end a war that has claimed countless lives, Prince Caelan is forced into a political marriage with the one man he despises, the feared King Draven of the North. Whispers paint Draven as a ruthless tyrant and a monster who never reveals his face, hiding behind a black hooded cowl mask. Cold, unreadable, and merciless, he inspires fear wherever he goes. Caelan vows he will never submit to the man who stole his freedom. But as they journey to the frozen northern kingdom, the lines between hatred and desire begin to blur. Behind Draven's silence lies a dangerous secret, and hidden enemies are waiting to tear their fragile alliance apart. Bound by duty, haunted by betrayal, and drawn together by a passion neither of them can control, Caelan and Draven must decide whether to destroy each other... or risk everything for a love born in darkness. In a world where kingdoms are built on blood and trust is more dangerous than any blade, falling in love may be the deadliest choice of all.

The calm before the storm

The palace had forgotten how to celebrate.

For twenty years, the vaulted halls of Castle Aster had echoed only with the heavy tread of iron-shod boots, the murmurs of desperate prayers, and the distant, hollow tolling of mourning bells.

High above, portraits of dead kings stared down from their gilded frames.

Their painted smiles felt like a mockery, a cruel reminder of an era of prosperity that felt more like a myth than memory.

Prince Caelan had grown up in a kingdom that bled. He did not know what peace sounded like.

Standing beneath the high arched windows of the royal library, he watched the palace gardens sway softly in the morning breeze.

Summer had arrived in defiance of the war, splashing the terraces with vibrant gold and violet. But past the castle walls, past the manicured hedges, the northern horizon was stained with a sickly, rising haze.

Another village burned.

Caelan’s fingers tightened around the heavy parchment in his hand.

Another casualty report.

More names. More families broken. More sons who would rot in unremembered fields.

He folded the letter with deliberate, agonizing care and set it upon the polished oak table beside him.

ā€œThey’re getting younger,ā€ he murmured.

Across the table, Master Aldren did not look up from the leather-bound tome he had been pretending to read for the last hour. ā€œThey always do, Your Highness. War has a terrible appetite.ā€

Caelan turned his back on the window, unable to watch the smoke any longer. He hated those reports. Every week they arrived, stamped with the red wax of the royal seal, reducing human souls to neat rows of dark ink. Sometimes he recognized the names. Sometimes they belonged to boys he had traded bruises with in the courtyard, swinging wooden swords and dreaming of glory.

*Heroes.* The word tasted like ash.

A sharp, demanding knock broke the quiet of the room.

Both men turned as the grand library doors swung open.

A royal messenger stepped inside, clad in the deep blue tunic of the royal house, the golden stag of Aster embroidered across his chest. He bowed low, his movements tense and practiced.

ā€œYour Highness.ā€

Caelan forced his posture to relax, offering a tired, familiar smile. ā€œWhat is it, Thomas?ā€

ā€œThe King requests your presence in the council chamber immediately.ā€

The air in the library seemed to drop a degree. Caelan frowned. ā€œMy father is meeting with the council today? There was nothing on the ledger.ā€

ā€œHe is, Your Highness.ā€

ā€œWhy?ā€

ā€œI was instructed only to bring you at once,ā€ the messenger replied.

He kept his head lowered, staring firmly at the floor polished between them. He wouldn’t meet Caelan’s eyes.

A cold, uneasy weight settled in the pit of Caelan’s stomach. Beside him, Master Aldren closed his heavy book with a soft, final thud.

ā€œGo,ā€ the old scholar said quietly.

Caelan glanced at his tutor. ā€œYou think something has happened on the front?ā€

ā€œI think...ā€ Aldren hesitated, his gray eyes shadowed with a sudden, ancient weariness. ā€œ...that whatever waits behind those doors will change the shape of your world.ā€

Caelan offered a dry, breathless chuckle. ā€œYou’re growing dramatic in your old age, Aldren.ā€

ā€œI have lived long enough to earn the right.ā€

Neither of them smiled.

Caelan adjusted the silver clasp of his dark green cloak and stepped out into the corridor.

The castle felt... wrong.

The usual hum of daily life had vanished. Servants who normally greeted him with warm nods hurried past with averted eyes. Guards stood stiffly at every pillar, their knuckles white against their spears.

Whispering maids scattered like autumn leaves at his approach. The silence wasn’t peaceful, it was heavy, pressing against his ribs like the air before a lightning strike.

As they rounded the grand colonnade leading to the High Council chamber, Caelan froze.

Flanking the carved oak doors hung two massive, velvet banners.

To the left was the golden stag of Aster, bright, proud, familiar.

To the right... a snarling black wolf pinned against a field of crimson.

*Varek.*

Caelan’s heart struck his ribs like a war drum.

ā€œWhat is that doing here?ā€ he demanded, his voice barely more than a whisper.

The messenger did not answer. He simply stepped aside and pressed his shoulder into the heavy oak doors.

It made no sense. Varek’s crest had never crossed these threshold lines. Not in twenty years.

Caelan stared at the embroidered wolf, his skin crawling. His eldest brother, Lucien, had died choking on his own blood beneath that very symbol. Thousands of Aster’s sons had been slaughtered under its shadow.

The doors swung inward.

The council chamber fell deathly quiet.

Dozens of heads turned toward the entrance.

Caelan walked into a sea of unfamiliar faces, men standing along the perimeter dressed not in Aster’s blue, but in stiff, black military uniforms trimmed with crimson.

Delegates from the North. The enemy, standing in the heart of his home.

Caelan’s throat tightened, his hand instinctively dropping to the hilt of his sword.

At the far end of the hall, seated upon the raised dais, his father looked decades older than he had at breakfast. The silver in the King’s hair gleamed harshly under the skylight, and the exhaustion carved into his face went deeper than bone. Queen Elara sat beside him. She was staring straight ahead, her hands clasped so tightly in her lap that her knuckles were drained of color.

ā€œCaelan,ā€ the King said. His voice was raspy, stripped of its usual majestic resonance. It cracked on the second syllable.

That small break frightened Caelan more than the black-clad guards lining the walls.

ā€œCome forward, my son.ā€

Caelan walked down the long marble aisle, the sound of his boots echoing off the high stone walls. No one spoke. No one dared to breathe.

When Caelan reached the foot of the dais, the King stood up slowly, resting his heavy hands on the arms of the throne to steady himself.

ā€œThe war...ā€ The King stopped, swallowing hard as he fought for breath. ā€œ...the war is over.ā€

For one suspended, impossible second, the universe held its breath.

*Over?*

The word bounced around the chamber, refusing to dock. No more marches. No more burning villages. No more casualty reports arriving on cold morning tables.

A wave of hushed relief rippled through the native nobles. Several ministers dropped their heads into their hands, breathing prayers of thanks. Old Lord Vane openly wept, wiping his eyes with a silk sleeve.

Peace. They had finally reached the end of the nightmare.

A breathless smile began to form on Caelan’s lips, relief blooming warm in his chest, until he looked closer at the throne.

His father was staring at the floor, refusing to meet his eyes.

His mother was not crying out of joy. Her face was a mask of cold, agonizing despair. And across the room, the commander of the Varek delegation was watching Caelan with the hungry, calculating smile of a wolf that had just caught a lamb in a snare.

The relief in Caelan’s chest turned instantly to ice. The smile died on his lips.

He looked from his father to the crimson banners, his voice dropping into the terrifying quiet of the room.

ā€œWhat did we trade for it?ā€
