Chapter 2

Author: Jo NoBite
I looked up to see the receptionist placing a huge bouquet of May Bells on my desk.

Just then, a message from Riley popped up on my phone. "Anna, do you like the flowers? Wait for me, and I'll pick you up after work."

A mocking smile spread on my lips.

This wasn't a gift. This was just compensation for the guilt he was feeling after betraying me. I had been moved by his surprises so many times, but now, I wondered how much of it was genuine and how much of it was him making up for a guilty conscience after he had cheated on me with another woman.

After work, Riley was waiting in his car for me.

When he saw me come out, he got out immediately, opened the door for me, shielded my head as I got in, and then leaned in to buckle my seatbelt. My coworkers whistled and teased at the doorway, joking that Riley and I were living out a romance drama every day.

Riley waved at them, then got in and started the car. "Anna, the wedding dress I designed myself has arrived. Let's stop by the bridal shop today so you can try it on. If anything doesn't fit, we still have time to fix it."

I nodded.

Before I could get Riley out of my life, I had to keep pretending nothing was wrong. I had to play my role until the finale.

As we entered the bridal shop, Riley suddenly froze in place.

I followed his gaze.

Nelly was wearing a satin off-the-shoulder wedding dress, the neckline covered in white May Bells, and a thin veil on her head. Riley's face instantly darkened. "Why is the wedding dress I ordered on her?"

A nervous shop assistant quickly explained, "Sir, this lady gave your name at the counter, so we thought she was the bride and let her try on the dress."

I looked at Nelly.

"Do you think wearing a wedding dress means you can marry whoever you want?" A hint of guilt flashed through Riley's eyes as he snapped at Nelly, "Hurry up and take it off. Who do you think you are to wear Anna's wedding dress?"

"I was just trying it on for Anna, it doesn't mean anything…" Nelly's eyes reddened as she ran into the changing room in tears.

When we finally got the dress, the stitching at the waist was torn open, and the neckline was smeared with bright lipstick. Riley tried to comfort me as he said, "The dress is ruined now. I'll design a new one for you."

I was about to tell him not to bother when my boss called. There was a project that needed to be rushed.

Riley drove me back to the office.

Late that night, just as I finished my work, my phone rang suddenly.

It was the emergency center at the hospital. "Hello, are you a family member of Mr. Dennis Hart and Madam Melinda Smith? They were in a serious car accident and are in the emergency room. Please come as soon as possible."

I hung up, unable to believe what I had just heard. How could my parents be in a car accident in the middle of the night?

Panicking, I opened my ride-hailing app, but our office was so remote that no drivers were available.

I ran out of the building, calling Riley repeatedly for over twenty times, but not a single answer.

I suddenly spotted Riley's car across the street, out on the road.

The car was rocking slightly.

Through the window, I could see Nelly, still wearing my wedding dress, tangled up with Riley, and he looked completely absorbed. My name lit up on his phone screen, but he ignored it.

I could scarcely believe it as I bit my lip, holding back from making any sound as the taste of blood exploded in my mouth.

I didn't know how long I ran along the street before I finally found a cab, but when I reached the hospital, it was already too late. My parents were gone. I never got to see them one last time.

The medical staff handed me their phones.

When I unlocked one, the screen paused on a text message. Through the cracked screen, I tapped a video inside the message.

It was a video of Riley and Nelly sleeping together.

Nelly had sent it to my mom out of revenge for what had happened at the bridal shop.

As it turned out, my parents had gone out that night to confront Riley for me. When Riley finally arrived at the hospital, I was just sitting blankly in the hallway.

I had already cried myself numb, and my mind was empty. My ears couldn't hear anything.

Riley's lips moved in front of me. It was a long time before his voice reached me. "Anna, it's okay. You still have me. I'll always be by your side. I promised your parents to take good care of you."

He tried to find me that day, but I had already moved and changed all my contact information. The next day, he came to the company looking for me, but security stopped him at the door. It wasn't until late at night, when I left work, that he finally managed to ambush me outside the company after waiting the entire day.He rushed to explain, "Anna, I'll never be with Nelly, and I won't acknowledge that boy. I have no feelings for her.

Nelly was startled by the hatred in my eyes. She kept on yelling that it had nothing to do with her before running away.A few months later, I heard from my colleagues that Nelly had given birth to her baby. To support her baby, she found a quick-paying job at a nightclub.Over the years, I occasionally heard news about Riley from my higher-ups. They said he had tried to quit the project, but he was trapped at the base and couldn't come back. He would just drink and drown in his regrets all day long, always talking about how sorry he was to me.Whenever the bosses asked me about him, I simply smiled and shook my head. The moment Riley betrayed me, there was no more future between us. And after my parents had died because of him, the only person he could become was my enemy.Ten years later, I was promoted to general manager of the company. At the same time, the Kentran Top-Secret Research Project had finally finished, and all the members returned to Kentra one by one.Riley came

"There must be some misunderstanding. I never wanted to hurt you, and I'd never hurt your parents. I really didn't know things would turn out this way…" Riley's voice was starting to mix with sobs as he spoke to me through his phone. He was the one who had cheated. He was the one responsible for my parents' deaths. Yet somehow, he was the one in tears? "You saved my life once, but my parents have paid you back for it. Riley, we owe each other nothing now!"With that, I hung up and blocked his number. After that, Riley completely disappeared from my life. Everyone on the Kentran Top-Secret Research Project had signed a ten-year contract. Even if they wanted out, they couldn't leave until it was finished.Life slowly returned to normal, and I offered my entire self to work, using the busyness to numb myself.Three days later, Nelly cornered me outside the company. "Anna, what did you do? Why is Riley ignoring me? He canceled his phone number and even sold his house! Where are you

Early next morning, Riley was already waiting for me downstairs. As soon as I got into the car, he pulled out a steaming bag of pastries and warm milk from under his coat. "I kept them in my coat to keep them warm so you can have a hot breakfast. Hurry and eat before it gets cold."I took the breakfast and held it in my hands.Riley drove, glancing at me from the corner of his eye every now and then."Yesterday, the head of the Kentran Top-Secret Research Project contacted me. My name's on the list for this new project. Anna, I know it was you who recommended me." My hand trembled when I heard that.He didn't notice anything wrong and kept talking."Even though the list is confidential, I'm sure you're on it too. Are you trying to change your environment because of your parents? Don't worry. No matter where we go, we'll always be together. But the project starts tomorrow, so our wedding has to be cancelled. Once we settle in, I'll find a way to make it up to you, okay?"Riley nev

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and left. Then I went to the cemetery. The flowers in front of their headstones had already withered. In that moment, I collapsed completely as all my false strength had been drained away. All the anger, regret, and pain of losing my parents built up inside me and finally exploded. I dropped to my knees and cried my heart out."Anna, why are you here? I've been looking for you. Don't cry, I'm right here." Riley came rushing to me, pulling me into his arms in a panic."Are you missing your parents again?" Looking at the concern on his face, all I could feel was disgust. When he leaned in, the scent of the perfume on him made my stomach turn."Ugh!" Suddenly, I threw up all over him.Riley wasn't the least bit annoyed, only worried. He quickly took off his dirty jacket, afraid it would get me dirty too. "Anna, are you feeling sick? Let me take you to the hospital right now."I pushed him away, still crying while looking at my parents'

Through the screen, my eyes and Riley's met, and his face instantly went pale. I saw the panic and fear in his eyes. The next moment, the screen went black, and my phone showed "no signal".Riley had unplugged the camera. But before he even returned, I already got a call from Nelly. She sounded especially smug. "You secretly turned on the security camera in the bedroom, didn't you? You sure can put up with a lot. You didn't react with anger after seeing me and Riley in your bed? You have never seen him crazy like that in bed before, have you? You're like a dead fish in bed, after all. You couldn't give Riley any sort of passion. He's already completely addicted to my body now."Do you really think you can put up with him seeing me even after you get married? Oh, and by the way, it wasn't just the bed. The kitchen, the bathroom, the sofa… We've done it in every corner of your home."It wasn't long after Nelly hung up before Riley hurried back."Anna, there's nothing nice around h
