Chapter 2

Penulis: Fierce Sleeping Dog
The living room was abruptly silent, with Nana's fingers hovering over her own phone screen while Tim forgot to wipe his tears.

After a long while, he frowned and asked, "So that's a yes?"

I put down my cup as I answered, "What was it you said? 'You love her, that's all that matters'. Since that's now the case, I have no objections."

Tim still looked mystified. "You're not going to ask about her family?"

"Nope."

"Her job situation?"

"Nope."

"You're not worried this is a scam?"

"If it is, you can call the cops."

Running out of questions, Tim could only stare at me blankly.

In his last life, he wanted my agreement so badly.

But now that I gave it to him, he didn't erupt in delight as I thought.

That was when Nana put away her phone, her smile fading ever so slightly. "Marriage is a serious matter, ma'am."

"I know," I replied, holding her gaze.

"Wedding presents, houses, the wedding ceremony itself. Everything must be clear cut."

"That you can discuss amongst yourself."

Nana glowered right then. "Tim is your son. Don't you care at all?"

I chuckled. "He's an adult. His marriage is his own call. So register your marriage, and have a ceremony if you want. If you need anything, get it on your own."

Tim sprang to his feet, his lips trembling. "What are you saying?!"

"I'm saying I agree with your marriage," I replied, "but I'm not buying a house for that or sponsoring your wedding."

"You wanted me to leave from the start!" he hollered. "Is that why you have no problem with me marrying just about anyone?"

I held his gaze calmly. "Tim. You're the one who said you don't need us."

Tim's eyes widened in panic, but he soon bellowed in rage, "Fine, you said it! You better not regret it!"

"No, I won't," I replied.

With that, Tim grabbed his car keys from the couch, took Nana's hand, and strode towards the door.

At the doorway, Nana turned towards me. "Ma'am, I think I must tell you that Tim is everything to me. That's why I'll always remember the attitude you showed us today."

I nodded. "Never forget."

As the door slammed violently shut, I could still hear Tim growling outside, "She doesn't care about me at all! She was protesting so much before, but suddenly agreed? It must be Joe's idea!"

"Calm down," Nana replied, assuring him softly. "Let's just register our marriage, and they won't regret anything after."

I was standing just behind the door and heard everything.

Just then, my husband stepped out of his study, still holding the unsigned property deed and agreement.

In my last life, I transferred ownership of a house we had downtown to both my sons.

It was a 50/50 share, but Tim rejected the idea, calling it unfair; that Joe was three years younger and could make enough money to buy a house on his own, and didn't need it.

When I told him it's fair, he ripped the deed in half.

"You just want to give Joe what's mine!" he yelled. "Don't think I don't know! You always think that he's better than me!"

It was why we ended up selling the house to give him $800,000 as a wedding present and to cover the wedding costs.

On the other hand, Joe never asked for anything. He even said that he can stay at the workplace dormitories since he just started his job.

Naive as ever, he told the netizens who demanded if he was hogging the family inheritance that my husband and I were just being fair.

Naturally, all the replies were scathing, calling him playing dumb while stealing his brother's birthright.

Holding Ben's gaze, I said, "Ben… Don't bother with the deed."

Ben was left stunned. "What?"

"Tim said we weren't being fair. So let him handle everything himself."

Ben paled a little. "Wait, did I miss something?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I walked to my desk and opened the drawer, taking out the debit cards inside. "Starting now, we'll freeze all of Tim's allowances. He can pay for his own wedding."

Ben stayed silent for a long while, eventually asking quietly, "Are you really going to leave him to his own devices?"

I looked outside the window, where Tim, holding Nana's hand, led her to the car.

"It's not that I don't care. He wants his freedom," I replied.

He wants his freedom that bad?

I'll just give it to him.

It was only when Nana was sentenced that Tim finally broke. He sat outside the courtroom for a long time, the legal document with a very big number on it in his hands. He looked at it repeatedly. Now, he had lost his wife and his savings. Even the house he cared so much about was sold off to cover his debts. He took to the internet, publicly apologizing that he was guilty of credit card fraud, malicious slander, and scandal fabrication. The ones who used to flame my family were no longer on his side, while the rest of the internet and his former colleagues said he reaped what he sowed. As even distant relatives refused to stay in touch, he now had a taste of what we went through in our past lives. But unlike us, he was alive. He could admit his mistakes and start fresh. As long as he was willing to bear the consequences, I wouldn't stop him from living his life.A year later, he found a modest job and rented a tiny apartment outside the city, and had to commute to work on the

When he was told about it, Joe asked me in disbelief, "Why would Tim still give her money?"I shrugged. "He believes she'll suddenly be kind again once she gets the money. He has no idea she never changed, and refuses to admit that even if he's seen her true colors by now."To no surprise, Nana went missing in just two weeks, taking away Tim's car, debit cards and whatever savings he had left.Even her rental was cancelled ahead of time. When Tim finally went to the cops with her IOU, they told him she was spotted taking a train to another city, and that she applied for more loans with his identity.Hence, in just two weeks, Tim suddenly owed over $800,000.He finally caved. Instead of posting another complaint, he called me.His voice was hoarse from crying as he said, "Mom… I made a mistake. I understand that now. I shouldn't have listened to Nana, or taken your money, or slandered Joe… Can you please clear my debts?"I didn't respond, which left him sobbing. "Mom… Are yo

The next day, Tim posted the chat logs of me rejecting his demands and elaborated how I humiliated him at his wedding, forcing him to sign that adoption annulment. This time, however, sentiment wasn't one-sided. Netizens weren't quick to flame me, as guests at the wedding had posted videos showing the entire course of events. In fact, with the clear proof of adoption, ledgers and Nana's $600,000 wire transfer, sentiment had changed drastically.[Unfair? More like the Listons adopted an ingrate!][Tim Liston knew that his brother was the real deal, but still manufactured lies to hurt him!][And that broad is obviously after his money!][Is he still saying he's in the right? After his parents showed all the receipts? Outrageous!]It took some time for Tim to notice, but it was already too late when he started to delete his posts. Even his company noticed and watched the full video. In fact, while Joe got his job back after being previously suspended due to online backlash, Tim wa

Nana frowned. "What debts?"I projected a ledger on all her expenses.A gold chain worth $28,000.A limited edition Birkin bag worth $19,000.Designer brand cosmetics worth $16,000.Presidential suites, the cocktail party and the banquet hall rental, all totaling up to $90,000.A wire transfer amounting up to $600,000.All of it, going to Nana.Even as the guests clamored, Nana's face dropped.Still, she said, "Tim gave me the money willingly…""I never argued against that," I replied. "I just wanted to ask. If you can give him happiness as you said, why are his parents paying for everything?"Nana could only gulp as she was unable to muster a response.Still, Tim wheeled on me and growled, "Do you have to embarrass me at my wedding?""That will be your wife," I replied, shaking my head. "Not me."Nana dragged him off right then. "Don't listen to them. It's our big day. Let's just go." Tim actually stumbled from her touch.I watched them go, calling out after them, "Yo

Tim opened his mouth, ready to argue, but no words were coming out.Still, Nana hissed, "Those ledgers prove nothing. All parents are obligated to pay their children's bills…""True," I replied, turning to her. "That was why I never asked him to pay me back, but he tries to paint me as a villain anyway."Tim turned at me sharply right then, with only rage in his eyes and no hint of guilt. "I only told the truth! If you were willing to sponsor my wedding and give me that house, none of that would have happened!" As I looked into his eyes, whatever little hope I had left faded. "So you still think you didn't do anything wrong?""I'm never wrong!" he hollered.I shrugged as I turned to the crowd, presenting his medical reports. "You claimed I'm not being fair when I stopped you from eating seafood, but you neglected to mention that you're allergic."When I bought clothes for you and Joe, your size was different and they didn't have it. That's unfair too, even though I bought a mor

Nana's expression stiffened. "What money?""The bridal gown," I replied. "The wedding presents, the rental for the banquet hall, the wedding photoshoot, your gold bracelet, your handbags… Tim bought those, didn't he? And he was using my debit card."Taking out my phone, I showed them the long lists of expenditures they made. "That's $276,480 since you started dating Nana."Even as Nana glowered, Tim stepped in front of her. "What do you want?""Just reminding you that you're an adult, and that you should face the consequences of your own choices.""So you came to ask for money?""No," I said simply, "I'm just asking you to clear your debts."Tim's jaw clenched in fury. "You're actually keeping the receipts from your own son?!" "You claimed I only ever spent money on Joe," I replied. "I need proof to clear things up, don't you think?"I then turned towards the screen at the center of the banquet hall, having contacted the banquet team beforehand.Soon, three documents were sh
