Chapter 3

Penulis: Sour Orange
Three days before my birthday, I asked Livio to meet up so we could talk things out honestly. But the second I suggested canceling the party, his face turned stone-cold.

"Do you have any idea how much work I put into this?" he snapped. "I wanted it to be perfect for you! Invites are already out to all my friends, and now you're telling me to cancel it?"

My heart twisted as I stared at his familiar features, hearing him spout those fake lines. Still, I pushed forward. "Can't we just skip it? I want to spend my birthday alone with you."

I could never forget his reaction. His eyebrows quirked up, and his eyes overflowed with mockery.

"The invites are sent," he said. "Canceling would make me look like an idiot in front of everyone. You don't want that for me, right?"

I stared at him for a long time before nodding. After he left, I called Jordan, who had always had a thing for me, and laid it all out.

"After the party's over, let's get married. I'm done with this chaos; I just want something stable," I said.

Jordan remained silent, which made me feel like overstepping. But then, he spoke seriously. "I'm in. You'd better not back out, or I'll drag you to City Hall no matter what."

Remembering that, I sighed and nodded. Jordan's face broke into a huge grin as he led me toward my apartment.

...

I'd rented a place in the same complex as Livio to stay close to him. As we walked through the gate, we bumped into him and Maggie heading out, hand in hand.

We passed them, but Livio grabbed my arm. "What's this? Not playing the good girl anymore? Bringing guys home now?"

Before I could respond, Jordan knocked his hand off and pulled me close. "Watch your mouth! It reeks of cheap insults."

Livio didn't get mad, but his eyes mocked me. "Wow, the fake marriage crew is really committing to the act. But I'm curious, Diane. How are you gonna spin this tomorrow when it all falls apart?"

I gave him a blank look and took Jordan's hand. "Let's go."

Thrilled about my response, Jordan shot a smug glare at Livio and followed me without a word.

Livio's face twisted. "How dare you ignore me again, Diane!"

Maggie stepped in front of me, trying to play nice. "Diane, stop messing around. Just apologize to Livio, and you guys can still be friends."

She winked at me with feigned concern, but I just rolled my eyes. "Worry about your own mess, Maggie."

With that, I continued my way toward the apartment building. At my door, I was about to unlock it when Livio pushed past me, punched in the code, and strolled inside like he owned the place.

"Still haven't changed the code? My birthday means that much to you, huh?" he teased.

My eyes narrowed, and I grabbed him. "What do you want, Livio?"

The hassle made us both say no. We settled for a simple dinner with close family and friends.During the trip, I handed Jordan my phone to avoid Livio's harassment through different numbers. He was thrilled, grinning every day. Gradually, I fell for him hard. After Livio's mess, I'd thought love was off the table forever. But true feelings never died.We were back in Skyelinville three months later when snow was falling.Mia invited me for afternoon tea, asking eagerly, "No honeymoon baby after three months?"I shook my head, but nausea hit me right after. I went to the hospital for an examination, and the tests showed that I was pregnant.I walked out with the report, spotting a familiar figure in the garden. It was Livio in a wheelchair, missing a leg."Didn't expect to see him here," Mia whispered. "I heard that the night you left, he sped to the airport like a madman and crashed into a truck. It cost him a leg and landed him in the ICU."I frowned slightly, feeling nothing.

Livio gripped my waist, his eyes locked on mine with a desperate spark. "You and Jordan just met. How can it be real? We're childhood friends, knowing each other the best. Give me one more chance to prove it."As he leaned in, I struggled but couldn't break free. Pushed to the brink, I slapped him hard, shoved him away, and stepped back to safety. The light in his eyes extinguished, and he choked, "You'd hurt me for a guy you barely know?""Yeah, we just met, but he cherishes me and gives me security." I laughed bitterly. "And you? You saw me as a fallback. In my place, who would you choose?"He shut his eyes, tears slipping down, too ashamed to look at me. I turned to leave, but he grabbed my clothes."Let go!" I barked, irritated. His hand shook so badly I could feel it. He murmured, "I screwed up. I shouldn't have bet with Maggie or toyed with your feelings. I'm an idiot. Please forgive me."In the past 20-plus years, I had never seen him so broken. If he'd been like this on

Livio's right hand was wrapped in thick bandages, the outer layer soaked with blood. My eyes narrowed, but I quickly looked away."Diane, why didn't you visit me in the hospital?" he croaked."Why would I?" I asked back. "We're nothing to each other."His eyes dimmed, and he murmured, "But you said you'd only marry me."The air grew thick with tension, and Jordan's anger was boiling over.I quickly dragged him toward the lounge, cooing, "Honey, let's check out more catalogs."Livio tried to follow, but Mia intercepted him with a suit. "Mr. Becker, here for your suit? It's ready. Do you mind stepping aside for a moment?"She plastered a polite smile, but her tone was firm, especially after she witnessed my coldness toward him.It hit me that I had ordered the suit as a birthday gift, even bringing him in for measurements. He had never valued my gifts, but this time he came to collect this one in person.Jordan followed me, his jaw tight. As we reached the lounge, Livio started

I found the picture of Livio's injury that his friend had shared in the group chat and sent it to my phone, then forwarded it to Maggie.[And? Your man's still flipping out over me.]Her call came in the next second. I rejected it and blocked her.Feeling victorious, I muttered, "Take that."Turning, I saw Jordan's stormy face. My heart raced as I leaned in for a quick kiss. "Relax. I was just messing with her."His mood shifted from cloudy to sunny. He pulled me close to sit with him, and the three of us chatted comfortably. But then, my phone vibrated again. It was a message from another unknown number, showing a photo of a gruesome, bloody hand. The text read: [I'm hurt, Diane. Can you come to the hospital?]I rolled my eyes and replied: [Save it for your funeral invite.]...Three days later was Skyelinville University's homecoming. As distinguished alumni, Jordan and I were invited. With time to spare, I promised to take him to my favorite atelier for custom suits. Ecst

Jordan nuzzled my hair. "Love at first sight. How could anyone resist a smart, beautiful girl who's so kind to strays?"Something dawned on me. "You knew me in college?""Same school, same year," he replied.Under my surprised gaze, he added with a jealous edge, "But your eyes were only on that jerk."Touched, I rolled over and kissed him.The sun shone outside, while inside, the room was filled with a sweet, intoxicating heat....When I woke up at dusk, Jordan was gone.I stretched my sore body, wobbling to get out of bed. But as soon as my feet hit the floor, I yelped and tumbled down.On the phone, Jordan heard the noise and rushed in. He lifted me, checking carefully. "Honey, you okay?"I blushed and covered my naked body."Guess you're fine," he chuckled. "We've done it all, and you're still shy around me?"I'd never known this cheeky side of him. I glared and swatted him. "Shut up and put me down."Before he could react, chaos erupted from his phone. "Punching glass

I couldn't wait for my parents to buy a new house and move out.At Livio's door, I debated ringing the bell or just dumping the bag in the trash. That was when their housekeeper came out with a grocery basket.I handed her the bag, asked her to give it to Livio, and hurried back.We had dinner with my parents, and they kept us until ten. Livio called, but I blocked him without answering. The next day, I went to my art studio to pack up, planning to move it off the street where his company was located. He pushed the door open and entered casually. My expression darkened instantly. "Get out. You're not welcome here."He ignored me, flipping through my paintings. Irritated, I set down my canvas and shoved him.He didn't dodge, grabbing my wrist instead. "Even if you're cutting ties, you could've given me the stuff yourself. Don't worry. Maggie's not petty like you. She wouldn't mind us meeting."Hearing the comparison made my blood boil. I yanked my hand free and frowned. "We don'
